00:00Today, we will discuss an important issue that is often not given enough attention.
00:05This is osteoporosis, a condition that gradually weakens our bones and increases the risk of cancer.
00:13That's right, Audrey. To give clear and tips on how we can take care of our bones,
00:20we will be joined by Dr. Leo Olarte.
00:23Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines, Doc.
00:28Welcome back, Doc. Good morning.
00:31Magandang, magandang, magandang kumaga, Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:36Dr. Leo Olarte at your service.
00:39Okay. Doc, for our countrymen, please explain why osteoporosis is happening.
00:48Okay. Osteoporosis is called a silent killer.
00:59It's a bone disease that we can see in people who don't eat enough.
01:08They lack calcium and vitamin D.
01:11They don't exercise, drink alcohol, and smoke.
01:16That's the common cause of osteoporosis.
01:21In simple words, it's easy for the bones to weaken.
01:27Now, Doc, you've mentioned the main causes of osteoporosis
01:32and the lifestyles that can be affected here.
01:35What is it, Doc, specifically, that can affect these vices in osteoporosis?
01:43Drinking too much, not exercising,
01:49that's the main cause of osteoporosis.
01:54It's easy for our bones to weaken.
01:56Brittle bones are the ones that remove calcium from our bones.
02:02That's why our bones become fragile.
02:04It's easy for our bones to weaken.
02:06Especially when we're old and we don't exercise,
02:10or postmenopausal, even for men,
02:14it's easy for our bones to weaken.
02:19So, Doc, age is a factor.
02:22This is what people feel when they get older.
02:25But what are the common symptoms of osteoporosis?
02:29How can a person know if they have a serious condition?
02:34Yes, it's serious.
02:35Usually, osteoporosis is symptomless.
02:40There are no symptoms.
02:42But if we know that we have stooping,
02:50like we're sinking,
02:52that's osteoporosis.
02:54It's hard for us to breathe.
02:56And we're losing height.
03:03Sometimes, we can see our neck.
03:07The skin of our neck has become wrinkled
03:09because it shrinks.
03:12The vertebra has compressed in our neck.
03:16That's why, for the elderly,
03:17we can see that the skin of the neck is wrinkled.
03:21Those are the symptoms.
03:23But, Doc, what's the age?
03:25How many people usually experience osteoporosis?
03:31For young people, osteoporosis starts
03:35when your diet is not balanced.
03:39You lack calcium.
03:41You lack phosphorus.
03:43You don't have vitamin D.
03:44You don't have vitamin C.
03:45Age.
03:47It starts when you're young.
03:49There's what's called idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis.
03:53And for us,
03:55most of the time, when you're a senior citizen
03:57or post-menopausal,
03:58our female siblings don't regulate
04:02or for men with low testosterone,
04:06low testosterone,
04:08osteoporosis will occur.
04:10So, it means that even young people
04:12can experience osteoporosis, Doc.
04:15So, what should we do?
04:18For example, in their 20s,
04:21to get rid of osteoporosis.
04:27You need to eat a balanced diet.
04:31You need vegetables.
04:33Don't always eat meat or pork.
04:35Always eat pork.
04:37Beef.
04:38Mammal.
04:39Cow.
04:40Chicken.
04:41So, it's not good.
04:43You need a balanced diet.
04:45Then, exercise.
04:47Daily walking, running.
04:49And then, don't drink a lot of alcohol.
04:53Also, don't smoke.
04:55And expose yourself to sunlight
04:59so you can get vitamin D.
05:01And prevent falls.
05:03You'll fall.
05:04That's a common symptom of osteoporosis.
05:08You'll fall.
05:09You'll collapse.
05:10But Doc, are there treatment options available for osteoporosis?
05:15Yes, there are.
05:17First of all, you need to see a doctor.
05:19Because there's an examination called DEXA.
05:23So you'll know if osteoporosis is starting.
05:27But the most common medicine for osteoporosis is
05:32bisphosphonates.
05:33You need a doctor for that.
05:35Bisphosphonates is a medicine.
05:37It can be an injection.
05:38You can drink it.
05:40There's alendronate.
05:43There's also raloxifene.
05:48You need to see an orthopedic surgeon for that.
05:53Like me.
05:54Orthopedic surgeon.
05:56Alright.
05:57Thank you very much for all the information you shared with us this morning
06:00regarding bone disease, osteoporosis.
06:03Dr. Leo Olarte, thank you very much.
