00:00Hey, can we speak plainly?
00:05Okay, the fastest commercial flight ever was in February 2019, when an airplane flew at
00:11the speed of 801 mph.
00:14And that was only thanks to the direction it was heading in, east.
00:18And the passengers there also rapidly lost weight.
00:21What?
00:22The airplane diet?
00:24Is that a thing?
00:25Still in due time, though, here are some mind-blowing facts about airplanes.
00:31First things first, according to different sources, only 5-20% of the world's population
00:37have ever traveled by airplane.
00:39But all of them have done it more than once.
00:42If you're afraid of flying, you must have wondered why planes don't have parachutes
00:46on board.
00:47Two reasons – money and common sense.
00:50First parachutes are heavy, and adding 300-something of them to the weight of the plane would reduce
00:55the allowed number of passengers, or their baggage.
00:58And secondly, even if you have a parachute, you simply won't be able to open the airplane's
01:03door to jump out – the difference in pressure is too much.
01:07But there's good news too.
01:09Some data suggests that sitting in the back of the plane is safer than anywhere else.
01:14If you're in the tail, you're about 40% more likely to survive in a plane crash.
01:19So stick to the back.
01:20The only reason you might regret it is… if one of your neighbors in the row is sick.
01:26Not airsick.
01:27Although that's unfortunate too.
01:28I mean, runny nose, coughing, that kind of stuff.
01:32Researchers say such a passenger has an 80% chance of infecting everyone around them with
01:38whatever they have.
01:40To minimize that risk, turn on the little air vent above your head and direct its flow
01:45on yourself.
01:46It will work as an air shield, blowing away the germs and not letting them cling to you.
01:52Hey, wouldn't it be great if you could buy a cheap little hazmat suit from the flight
01:58attendant during the trip?
02:00But then, you have to crawl into the thing while in that cramped little seat as your
02:04seatmates wonder which one of them you're dissing.
02:08Guess not, huh?
02:09But don't be in a rush to blame your coughing neighbor if you get sick after the flight.
02:14Ask yourself first – did you take the blanket from the flight attendant?
02:18If so, you might've caught germs from that.
02:21Airplane crew members say they only wash blankets once every few days, and the rest of the time
02:26they only get folded and reused.
02:29Who knows who used yours before you, and for what?
02:33Yuck.
02:34Unlike the cabin doors, the bathroom actually can be opened from the outside.
02:38There's a hidden latch that allows flight attendants to unlock the door in case of emergency.
02:44For example, to rescue a passenger who fainted inside.
02:47No, they don't do it for fun.
02:50Ever heard that banging noise when coming on or exiting the plane?
02:54Nah, it's not the ground crew hurriedly repairing the plane.
02:57It's just the baggage being loaded or unloaded.
03:00Workers don't really throw it around either, but they usually have very little time to
03:04be too gentle.
03:08If you fly, say, from New York to London, and not the other way around, consider yourself
03:13lucky.
03:14You'll probably be there a couple hours early.
03:17And that's true for many planes flying east.
03:19Nature itself helps them.
03:21There are jet streams high up that, if used correctly, give a hefty speed boost to aircraft.
03:27Jet streams are basically constant high-speed streams of air that carry you eastward on
03:32their gentle wings.
03:34Ahhhh.
03:35Then, you arrive early, and there's no gate for you yet, so your plane sits on the tarmac,
03:41waiting.
03:42You also might want to step on the scales while traveling with the jet stream, because
03:46they'll probably show a rather pleasing number.
03:49Thanks to the Iovos effect, perceived force of gravity is less when you're moving east,
03:55which means you weigh a tiny bit less too.
03:58The bad news is, as soon as the plane lands and stops, the pounds will come back.
04:03Thanks to international airspace agreements, planes flying from the U.S. to far and Middle
04:08East travel over the North Pole, and you can see its stunning icy landscapes pretty
04:13close.
04:14That's because airplane fuel freezes at temperatures below 50°F, and the aircraft
04:20needs to get much lower than its cruising altitude for warmer air.
04:24Make sure to get a window seat!
04:28Another sightseeing tour happens when your plane suddenly decides to not land straight
04:32away but make a circle around the airport.
04:35This can occur when there's something on the runway, or the wind is too strong, or
04:39there's just a heavy traffic down below.
04:42Yeah, airplanes also have traffic jams.
04:45So look outside and enjoy the panorama.
04:48That is, if there is a window near your row.
04:51Originally, planes were designed to have seat rows aligned with the windows.
04:55But to squeeze more people inside the cabin and make tickets cheaper, most airlines decreased
05:01the gap between the rows in the economy class.
05:04So your window seat should be more properly called a wall seat.
05:09If you want to complain about that, you can come up to the pilot yourself.
05:13Just make sure you know the code from the cockpit door.
05:16In fact, no one can enter the cockpit without the pilot's say-so.
05:20Even if you have the code, the door will only open after about half a minute, and that's
05:25if the pilots don't react.
05:27They can deny entrance by simply pressing a button.
05:31Let's imagine you've somehow gotten inside the cockpit, and the pilots are not there.
05:36Uh-oh.
05:37Can a regular person land a plane in such a situation like they show in the movies?
05:42Sorry, highly unlikely.
05:44Still, if the plane is modern, all its systems are intact, and there's at least one flight
05:49attendant on board, they might be able to land the aircraft following the instructions
05:54from air traffic control.
05:56Wait a second, there's an autopilot in there.
05:59Can it land the plane by itself?
06:01No good there either.
06:02Even more, the autopilot doesn't even fly the plane proper.
06:06It's basically just a super-advanced GPS that's only taken into account the plane's
06:11route and surroundings.
06:12It can keep the machine in the air, but any complex action is a human pilot's responsibility.
06:18That's why autopilot can only take control at the cruising altitude, which is usually
06:23around 36,000 feet.
06:25Planes have to fly so high to reduce air resistance.
06:28This causes drag and reduces efficiency of the engines.
06:32It shouldn't climb too high, though, because it will eventually lose lift and drop down,
06:37as they say.
06:40Speaking about control, the pilot is actually in charge of everything during the flight.
06:46Their level of responsibility is enormous, so they're both law and its enforcers on
06:51board.
06:52They even have handcuffs to tame unruly passengers.
06:55So behave, will ya?
06:57So that you understand what kind of responsibility is in the pilot's hands, a Boeing 747 airplane
07:04consists of numerous parts, like about 6 million of them.
07:08Just imagine navigating this kind of complex machinery with just a couple of buttons and
07:13levers.
07:14No wonder a pilot has to go through rigorous and lengthy training before being allowed
07:18in the cockpit.
07:20Even their oxygen masks are different from those in the cabin.
07:23While a regular passenger mask only has enough oxygen for 12 to 15 minutes, the one in the
07:29cockpit is designed to last much longer.
07:32That's because of that same huge responsibility.
07:35Pilots have to stay awake and focused to save all those lives on board at all costs.
07:41And if you think smaller private planes are safer than big commercial ones, that's a
07:45myth.
07:46According to statistics, passenger airplanes are more than twice safer than private ones,
07:51exactly because of the amount of rules and regulations imposed on them.
07:56Pilots follow strict schedules and are trained professionals, while private planes are often
08:00flown by amateurs.
08:03On the topic of amateurs, some believe that hard landing on water should be safer than
08:08on the ground.
08:09But that's not true either.
08:11Pilots even say that they try to avoid landing on the water.
08:14It's called ditching, by all means.
08:17Because of its structure, water is actually harder than soft ground at the moment of impact.
08:22And when the plane falls, it'll probably be filled with water very soon.
08:26The crew has to act really quickly to get everyone to safety after such a crash landing.
08:32And crash landings are exactly the reason why you have to stow your tray table and get
08:36your seat in the upright position.
08:38In case of a hard impact, an open tray may injure you, and if your seat is reclined,
08:44your head will travel a longer distance to the seat in front of you, increasing the risk
08:48of head trauma.
08:49It's for your own safety, pal!
08:51But at least you'll enjoy the pleasant blue color of that seat.
08:54It's made so to calm you down.
08:57Psychologists say the color blue helps you relax.
09:00If the seats were red, for example, it could've gotten on your nerves and made those who are
09:05afraid of flying even more jittery!
09:09And finally, the most important question.
09:12What are those mysterious numbers on your boarding pass?
09:15Your name, gate, and flight number?
09:17Okay, that's clear.
09:18There's a 6-letter passenger name reference or record locator that's randomly generated
09:23for you personally and gives access to your passenger data to authorities.
09:27And then there's a standalone letter depicting your class – A or F for First, Y for Economy,
09:34and Q for Economy Discounted Flight.
