NATO ships set out to patrol Baltic after cable damaged

Two NATO naval vessels left Copenhagen to patrol the Baltic Sea on Monday, January 27, as part of the “Baltic Sentry" operation to help protect critical infrastructure following a string of incidents in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines were damaged in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The vessels, the French 'Croix du Sud' and 'Luymes' from the Netherlands, left Copenhagen the day after an undersea cable between Sweden and Latvia was damaged in Sweden's exclusive economic zone, likely as a result of external influence, Latvia said.

A Belgian naval officer taking part in “Baltic Sentry” said that the latest breach of cables highlighted the importance of the NATO mission in the area.

Swedish authorities boarded a Maltese-flagged ship seized in connection with the latest breach of cables running along the bottom of the Baltic Sea to begin an investigation into the matter, the country's security police said on Monday.

01:07Was also informed that there was a new incident
01:13Unfortunately
01:14Authorities are currently still investigating what exactly happened. So that's not entirely clear to me at least
01:22yet
01:23but of course it only shows
01:26The importance of our presence and that enhanced vigilance and presence at sea in the Baltic Sea
01:34region is
01:36that more important
01:45It once more shows that no
01:48Security system is watertight that we have to invest in putting means
01:54At sea
01:56And that's more presence at sea is even more necessary
02:00On the other hand, it proves that our the importance of our presence is once more
02:07proven
02:20What we at the moment do is deter
02:23by enhancing our present presence
02:26We are the CCTVs of the Baltic Sea region
02:30And we hope to deter anybody who might be inclined to cause unlawful
02:38action or damage
02:39to critical infrastructure
02:42We hope we can deter them by our presence
02:45but we also track them we monitor them and
02:49everybody who is
02:51wanting to undertake anything unlawful against any infrastructure should know it will not remain unseen and
02:58Reaction will come
03:10Just like police forces in that are present in the cities
03:15We hope that crime
03:18If if any is deterred by our mere presence
03:23Of course, it is we are only one part of the big puzzle
03:28it is a multi-domain effort of
03:33Law enforcement jurisdiction and so on
