Prince William visited Cycle of Life, a non-profit organisation which works to help young people from diverse backgrounds improve their physical and mental health through cycling. At Cycle of Life, he pumped up a bicycle tyre and enjoyed a hot chocolate as he met young people who had been helped by the initiative which was set up in 2020. As he tested the brakes on the bike he worked on, he said he believed the correct way to stop was to squeeze both brakes at the same time, but joked his children like to do things differently. 00:00We've got a few from our team. I wouldn't like them.
00:07They're all working on different bikes, which will be hopefully...
00:15How did you feel?
00:41I thought they were amazing.
00:51And then, did you feel the weather was okay with this?
00:54It's like the rain and the wind.
01:00It's good.
01:07There's a couple of things I want to mention.
01:10Thank you, it's nice to chat to you.
01:19Okay, so here's another group.
01:21So we've got Nabil.
01:23Nabil, hi. How you doing? Nice to meet you.
01:26And Khan.
01:27Khan, sorry, you're busy.
01:29No, no.
01:30Nice to meet you.
01:31And Becky.
01:33Becky, hi.
01:34She's also been getting involved in some of our other projects.
01:38And she's actually been speaking on behalf of presentations and going to events.
01:44And it's really boosted her confidence.
01:46And I've heard that you've actually gone on the wall for the beauty competition now, is it?
01:50So she's gone from strength to strength, yeah.
01:52Did you ever think you could get to that point?
01:55Did you ever think you could get to that point?
01:57Public speaking, feeling confident?
01:58No, really, no.
01:59You know, it's incredible.
02:00Incredible, I guess.
02:01Brilliant.
02:02But well done you for overcoming those hurdles, those barriers.
02:05Because you could have gone a different way.
02:07And actually you've gone, no, this is what I'm going to do.
02:10This is how it's going to go.
02:11Well done you.
02:22Okay.
02:24Big wedding?
02:25Yeah.
02:26So.
02:29Yeah, just pull down.
02:31And then.
02:34That's daring for me.
02:35But I hope you will understand.
02:36Yeah.
02:38So the right pressure is 40.
02:41Got it.
02:43Are these pretty good?
02:44Is it good rubber?
02:45Good tires?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Yeah, these are pretty new ones.
02:48It's the brake side.
02:50It's that one there.
02:52The brake side bolt there.
02:54Yep.
02:57Make sure this.
03:00On both sides.
03:05Good.
03:06Great.
03:07Now this side will turn a little bit.
03:09Not too tight.
03:10Yep, that's what we're going to do.
03:11It's one of our programs.
03:13I want to see them put a whole bike together.
03:15Yep.
03:16So I'm confident when they take that bike away.
03:20Smile.
03:21Alright.
03:23So one of the big issues that we've got in our community.
03:28We've got a lot of young people who've got entrepreneurial skills.
03:31But unfortunately the way they use them attracts police attention.
03:34So what we're trying to do is find working with the young people.
03:39Bit of a slap in the face right now.
03:42But discussing the community window cleaning.
03:46Aiming maybe at people who've got additional needs or difficulty.
03:51Disability issues.
03:52Yeah, exactly, yeah.
03:53And trying to reach those people.
03:55So there's got to be a driving licence.
03:57You don't need.
03:58You get a lot of kiss here.
03:59You get more than a car boost.
04:01Really?
04:02Yeah.
04:03It's impressive.
04:04They've actually got a jet wash.
04:06We didn't bring it today.
04:09What's it like to ride this?
04:10Is it alright?
04:11Yeah.
04:12It's cool.
04:13And it's very new.
04:14Is it?
04:16Tell Prince about how you got involved.
04:20And about your aspirations as well.
04:27Cool.
04:28Do you want to introduce your next session?
04:31We go within 50 miles.
04:34So we tend to stay within cyclical distance of home.
04:37We do local markets, weddings, birthdays, festivals.
04:41Does the coffee machine go back in there?
04:43It doesn't.
04:44It stays on top.
04:45We have like a roof thing.
04:48Do you want to drink?
04:49Do you want coffee?
04:50Tea?
04:51Hot chocolate?
04:52I'll have a hot chocolate.
04:53Yeah?
04:54We've got some hot chocolate here.
04:55Might as well.
05:16Thank you very much.
05:17You're welcome.
05:18That looks and smells good.
05:20It's going to be good.
05:21My favourite hot chocolate.
05:23Hot chocolate is always welcome.
05:25Particularly on days like today.
05:27But normally, we go about an hour cycle.
05:30Bit of a jiffy.
05:33It's a great idea.
05:34It's fantastic.
05:35Is it an old convertible?
05:36Which we've created a custom top.
05:39So when it's closed up, it looks like an Airy Street caravan.
05:43It looks like something like a wing of a plane or an old...
05:46Yeah, that's the sort of thing.
05:49It's good on the hot, warm days.
05:51Yeah, well that's it.
05:52Not be so active in the winter.
05:54The wind is harder.
05:55Like a sail.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Spring and summer.
05:58Some of the things you can do with a bike.
05:59Yeah.
06:01Thank you very much.
06:02Thank you for the hot chocolate as well.
06:03Guys, thank you.
06:04You're welcome.
06:08We move forward.
06:09Which is a ten-year commitment.
06:11At least a million pounds a year.
06:13A million pounds a year.
06:15How did the Ebay Circular Life Children's Relationship come about?
06:20So we launched one of our funding programmes.
06:22Which is all about youth social action.
06:24Which I've already heard you talk about.
06:26And then you applied.
06:27And I think one of the things is...
06:29Your belief in your vision of what you're doing.
06:32It's absolutely disappointing, isn't it?
06:34You've just worked both ways.
06:35Yeah.
06:36I think for us, having children in need is important.
06:39It's not just...
06:40Yeah, here's a film you've got to see.
06:42It's what you've got to do.
06:43Everything else comes with it.
06:44And as you can see with the young people.
06:46That whole journey of them growing.
06:48I mean, if you've seen them up three or four years ago.
06:51I haven't seen you making children leave while they're here.
06:57They're great.
06:58Everywhere I go, the most successful ones are always the ones who've got an Ebay behind them.
07:03I completely agree.
07:04We've got to find a way of highlighting and raising these sort of people's profile across the country.
07:10Yeah, we're going to do a big piece of work this year.
07:13Through stories.
07:14Through children leaving the BBC.
07:16It needs highlighting.
07:17Definitely.
07:18Local communities thrive.
07:20My feeling is there's so much more.
07:22If you give people an Ebay, more to do.
07:24Sorry.
07:25And a community with more resources and more help.
07:28More things get done.
07:29Exactly.
07:30You bet on the sort of people in the community who are doing a good job.
07:33Rather than trying to, like you say, set up new organisations.
07:35Find new people.
07:37Replicate maybe some of the works that are here that doesn't exist.
07:47Thanks again.
07:48Take care.
07:49Look after yourselves.
07:50Take it easy.
08:00Bye.
08:01Bye.
08:02Bye.
