00:22🎵Bagpipes🎵
00:29So these are our reception volunteers, Sir John, Dean of the Civil Council.
00:33My goodness.
00:35You wouldn't be here normally, would you, all at the same time?
00:38No.
00:39Only on a Friday.
00:43Only on a Friday.
00:45Nearby.
00:46In another corner.
00:49And has it been, was it quite good last year?
00:52Did you have quite a lot of the Super Bowl?
00:54Yes.
00:56And events?
00:57Yes, yes.
00:59Well, your dinner and things like that.
01:00Well, we don't come to dinner.
01:01Then I do.
01:04I have a special dinner for you.
01:05I would have to do that.
01:09And how long have you been doing it now?
01:11Five years.
01:12Five years.
01:13Is it all done by word of mouth amongst you all?
01:16Do you again recruit others or what?
01:18No, not me.
01:19I just walked in one day and said, I'm a dancer.
01:22These are two longer-serving volunteers.
01:25Thank you, dear.
01:28Too long.
01:31And have you been here, yes?
01:3327 years.
01:3527 years.
01:36We met here.
01:38Years.
01:39Years.
01:40But we did meet, didn't we, the last time?
01:44We were here in 2012.
01:472011 or something like that.
01:50It was very good of you to come back here.
01:53We are very glad.
01:55It's not normally your day today, is it?
01:57No.
01:58No?
01:59Tuesday.
02:00Tuesday.
02:01Tuesday.
02:02And helping in the gardens.
02:04Yes, we help in the gardens.
02:07Beautiful gardens.
02:09I'm going to have to do the mowing as well.
02:12Darren managed to do that.
02:14Last week.
02:15Next month.
02:16Last month.
02:17In the summer, last week.
02:18Yes, in the summer.
02:19Very well done.
02:20I reorganized myself.
02:22Very good.
02:23So all helpers.
02:25Yes.
02:26Love being here.
02:28Thank you very much.
02:32But are you in again one day a week?
02:34Just a half a day.
02:35Just a half a day.
02:36Yes.
02:37Half a day until May 12th.
02:39Some people are painters, drawers.
02:41They come quite regularly.
02:43Because the bark and the trees down at the bottom garden is beautiful.
02:47When the sun comes through.
02:49It's gorgeous.
02:50And then they give you something to revive you.
02:52A nice cup of tea.
02:53It's going to be normal.
02:55So again.
02:58So rename the garden.
03:01The garden.
03:02One by one.
03:04Sometimes you don't understand.
03:09You've got that beautiful garden out there.
03:11But.
03:12So can I introduce you to Leslie Robertson.
03:14Leslie.
03:15Not everyone.
03:17So Leslie is our longest servant.
03:20And Catherine is our staffer.
03:23Has this been a bit.
03:25This has been renewed.
03:26And it works really well.
03:30It really was renewed when we came back after the COVID problems.
03:33Yes.
03:34We came back to renew.
03:36It was a good excuse to do something.
03:38It gave management the opportunity to have a rethink about how we wanted to go forward.
03:44And has it all recovered from COVID?
03:48I think so.
03:51The cafe really has.
03:54We're above COVID levels now.
03:56We're very successful.
03:57Elsewhere though.
03:58But the cafe absolutely has been a success.
04:00All the work we've done here.
04:02And the staff we've got.
04:03The volunteers.
04:04Have just made a huge difference.
04:06It really has.
04:07So are you making all these incredible things?
04:09Unfortunately.
04:10No.
04:11No.
04:12They're from.
04:14Different makers.
04:15Yeah.
04:16Yeah.
04:17Good old batteries.
04:20Very important.
04:21Yeah.
04:22We tried to.
04:23Killed it.
04:24Too much.
04:25Yeah.
04:26Because the thing.
04:27I always find that easier to manage than a puzzle.
04:29That's true.
04:30Puzzles fall apart.
04:31Yes.
04:32It's very tricky.
04:33Stuart is one of our researchers.
04:35And Stuart is the author of three books on the Gordon experience in World War II.
04:41We have them on display here.
04:43I don't think you've got another book in you at the moment, do you Stuart?
04:48I'm resting at the moment.
04:50But have you done all these battlefield tours?
04:53You know it all, do you?
04:55Unfortunately not.
04:56No.
04:57I.
04:58They say that the definition of an expert is somebody who knows more and more.
05:02But less and less until absolutely.
05:04Nuggets here and there.
05:06Little.
05:07You know.
05:08Gems.
05:09Wonderful.
05:10So what's the latest one?
05:11The latest one was Anzio.
05:12So.
05:13It's.
05:15It's Anzio's kind of overshadowed because of course they liberated Rome sort of two days before the end of the war.
05:22I just think also.
05:23I never understood.
05:24But he was one of those people who had this incredible outlook on life, didn't he?
05:28Alistair was an incredible person.
05:30Absolutely.
05:31He was.
05:32Had a great ballroom.
05:33We've just formed the Argonine Society here.
05:35Now we're going to Oslo.
05:36That's actually kind of what makes you interested in what I would say.
05:41So can you.
05:43Of course it's here.
05:44You know.
05:45And the Bible says they discovered that if you get rid of global pipes and the child.
05:51You can get the world of peace.
05:53It's a difference to us.
05:54You don't do that.
05:56No, it's not.
05:57It's not traditional scripture and violence.
05:59It's much, much the same over here.
06:01It's on C.
06:02It's on C.
06:03It's on the map there.
06:04And it really does make a difference.
06:06Yeah.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Oh, I'm sorry.
06:09I was going to ask you a question.
06:11The old cuff hasn't run out yet.
06:13No.
06:14So we have the table laid out as from Idad Desert.
06:18This is the successor to the sixth Italian one.
06:22Very old dining hall.
06:2475th to the 92nd.
06:26From the first Italian to the second Italian.
06:29And it's a really special concept.
06:31And there's a pair.
06:32We don't know what the other one is.
06:34So I'm sitting here.
06:36Yeah.
06:37Yeah, yeah, he'll show you everything by now.
06:39Oh, yes, that's nice.
06:41Bert is also a guy in the room.
06:43Have you seen the wonderful kilt
06:45from the First World War?
06:47The Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen, she's presented.
06:49Still covered in mud.
06:51I thought you wouldn't.
06:53Majesty.
06:55Pleased to see you again.
06:57So I gave you another helper.
06:59His helper?
07:01Oh, I'm getting nosy.
07:03No, no, no.
07:05It's fantastic.
07:07I was so pleased to see your painting.
07:09A portrait here.
07:11Do you like it?
07:13Absolutely. No, it looks terrific.
07:15I'm very glad it's on loan for quite some time.
07:17I hope.
07:19He hasn't seen it yet.
07:21He doesn't know how.
07:23But you know it because you saw it.
07:25Do you remember after the...
07:27We had the gathering, I think.
07:29But you are amazing.
07:31Because I hear you're 99 now.
07:33I'll be
07:35100 in August.
07:37I see.
07:39Yes.
07:41Don't worry.
07:43There'll be a message on its way.
07:47You're a great example to us all
07:49if I may say so.
07:51You really are marvellous.
07:53And I hope you're being kept a good eye on.
07:55I'm so glad.
07:57And by Young Jim's.
07:59Yes.
08:01I hope they give you a medicinal
08:03touch of something.
08:05I know.
08:07It's all in the garden.
08:11Also,
08:13son, yes.
08:15Just the only one?
08:17Yes. And my sister as well.
08:19But I'm just looking at the portraits.
08:21Hasn't much changed really,
08:23really, since then.
08:25It hasn't much changed.
08:28But is your father,
08:30is he at home?
08:32Yes, he stays on his own.
08:34He still stays on his own.
08:36With a bit of help from carers and us.
08:38And still got a bit of an appetite.
08:40Yes.
08:45Lots of butter, isn't he?
08:47Yes.
08:49He remembers when he was serving
08:51people here. He served your sister.
08:53At the table here.
08:58We'd like to present you with a bolt of
09:00regimental tweed.
09:02Which Johnny will take on your behalf.
09:04It's really kind.
09:06How marvellous.
09:08Is it Johnston's?
09:10No, I think it's
09:12Drove.
09:14It was his borders.
09:16Johnny and I did a joint project
09:18to get that woven a couple of years ago.
09:20He did fantastic.
09:22His mind wears out.
09:24We have more if you need more.
