00:00Since The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved gaming franchises out there, plenty
00:13of other developers have paid tribute to it in their own games.
00:17Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're looking at some of our favorite Zelda easter eggs
00:22found in other video games.
00:35But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and
00:39ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:43A Sleepy Boy Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
00:54Most people know about this one, but it's a classic.
00:57In Super Mario RPG, after you get fan favorite Geno to join your party, you can head back
01:02to the Rose Town Inn.
01:04If you talk to the person working the front desk and choose to take a nap, you'll wake
01:08up to find Link sleeping in the bed next to yours.
01:12If you try talking to him, the classic Zelda puzzle-solving jingle will play.
01:25It's a fun little nod considering Link starts most of his adventures asleep, and thankfully,
01:30it can still be found in the 2023 remake as well.
01:39Dungeon Play Deadpool
01:48As you might expect from a Deadpool video game, there are plenty of pop culture references
01:52in his 2013 adventure, and one of them is for The Legend of Zelda.
01:57In Chapter 3, as Deadpool pursues some enemies through some sewers, the camera pans up to
02:02give a top-down view.
02:03You then navigate a few rooms that play like a dungeon from the original Zelda game.
02:16It doesn't last very long, but it is a nice reference, even featuring Stalfos-like skeleton
02:21enemies and music that sounds suspiciously like that heard in the original game's final
02:26dungeon.
02:34Call of Duty Ghosts
02:39During the Federation Day mission in Call of Duty Ghosts, players are tasked with navigating
02:44the offices of a skyscraper.
02:46If you stop to take a look around at a certain point, you'll notice lots of trophies scattered
02:51around.
02:52A few of them are in the shape of a green rupee, and were apparently given to workers
02:56for Most Bushes Cut and Pots Smashed.
03:07Didn't know you could get an award for that, but if they gave this out in Hyrule, Link
03:10would undoubtedly win it every time.
03:19Force Triangulated
03:20It Takes Two
03:26Speaking of smashing pots, there's a great nod to one of Link's favorite pastimes in
03:31It Takes Two.
03:32During the Cuckoo Clock level at the Gates of Time, you can find a paddleboat that leads
03:37you to a house down the river.
03:39Going inside earns you the Force Triangulated achievement or trophy.
03:43And if you've played Ocarina of Time, you'll probably notice that the layout of this room
03:47and the multitude of pots in it are a reference to the guardhouse at Hyrule's entrance in
03:53that game.
03:59Naturally, just like Link, you can smash all these pots to bits and earn a bunch of green
04:12rupees.
04:17Here Lies Link Final Fantasy
04:25There's a town in the first Final Fantasy game called Elfheim, which holds a lot of
04:30green-clad NPCs that will probably remind most players of Link.
04:35In the original Japanese version, you could find a gravestone that reads, Here Lies Link,
04:40while in the American version it would read, Here Lies Erdrick, a nod to the protagonist
04:45of Dragon Quest.
04:46However, in all subsequent ports and remakes, the gravestone has stuck with the Zelda reference,
04:52likely because Link and his series are a bit more well-known than Erdrick and his.
05:03NeverQuest The Simpsons Game
05:13This one isn't subtle at all, but we felt we had to include it.
05:17The Simpsons Game features a ton of references and parodies of various video games, including
05:22The Legend of Zelda.
05:23In the NeverQuest level, Homer and Marge venture into a fantasy world.
05:27Not only is the name a play on the classic MMORPG EverQuest, but the two of them are
05:33dressed like the Zelda franchise's two leads.
05:36Where Marge wears a pink gown reminiscent of Zelda's attire, Homer is dressed in Link's
05:41classic green tunic and cap.
05:51Spreading the Word Ori and the Blind Forest
06:01The Triforce is one of the most recognizable images from The Legend of Zelda, and so a
06:06few games have included nods to it to pay homage.
06:09In Ori and the Blind Forest, a brilliant metroidvania, the story eventually leads you
06:14to Thornfelt Swamp, a dense woodland area.
06:18While navigating through, tucked into one of its corners, you can easily spot the image
06:22of the Triforce carved into a tree trunk.
06:25It seems someone in this world is a believer in the Hylian Goddesses.
06:36Paper Fan Fez
06:45You don't have to go far in the puzzle platformer Fez to find this easter egg.
06:49In fact, it's in the very first room.
06:52Inside Gomez's home, you'll spot a poster on the wall depicting a pink sky and a waterfall.
06:58Although it doesn't have the game's logo, this is the same image shown on the title
07:02screen of the original Zelda on NES.
07:05Another nod to the franchise comes not long after, right when you're about to leave
07:09the starting area.
07:10Gomez is introduced to his companion Dot while solving the opening area's puzzles.
07:15As he is about to set out on his own adventure, she stops him with a hey, listen, a nod to
07:20Navi, Link's companion in Ocarina of Time.
07:30Lost Fighters Guacamelee
07:37This luchador-themed metroidvania has tons of posters plastered across its backgrounds,
07:43many of which are parodies of famous video game characters like the Mario Brothers or
07:48Los Super Hermanos.
07:50Another such poster, which is also depicted in a church's stained glass window, is one
07:55for the one and only El Hiro.
07:57This shows a wrestler wearing green, holding an opponent above his head like an item, with
08:02the Triforce shining in the background.
08:04A clear nod to Link.
08:12You'll find another common poster for La Masquera, a wrestler wearing what is clearly
08:17Majora's Mask, which would be pretty unfair to have in the ring.
08:28A Cheeky Lad
08:29Donkey Kong Country 3, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
08:41In this DKC entry, Dixie and Kitty can buy items from Bazaar, a bear that frequently
08:47tries to squeeze more coins from you.
08:49After buying his first item, the seashell, you can ask about King K. Rool's castle.
08:54If you refuse to give him more money for the information, he'll tell you about a cheeky
08:59lad named Link.
09:00Apparently, Link also came asking about the castle but didn't have enough coins, leading
09:05Bazaar to rip him off for 500 rupees instead.
09:10Link also complained about the shopkeep's shells being the wrong shape, a nod to Link's
09:14Awakening and that game's collectible secret shells.
09:26A Familiar Face Super Mario Sunshine
09:35On several levels in Super Mario Sunshine, Mario will be challenged to a race by Il Piantissimo,
09:42a short man in a pianta costume.
09:44Some players figured out how to remove his mask by editing his model, and found a very
09:49familiar face lurking underneath.
09:51Although his skin is darker, Il Piantissimo has the same face as the running man from
09:56Ocarina of Time, and the postman from Majora's Mask.
10:00Since all these characters are known for doing an awful lot of running, it's a pretty fun
10:05easter egg.
10:12It's Dangerous to Go Alone
10:14Fable 3
10:22Said to Link by the old man who gives him his first sword in The Legend of Zelda, it's
10:27dangerous to go alone take this is one of gaming's most enduring phrases, and there
10:32are a few games that have included it as a reference.
10:35In Fable 3, inside the Mourning Wood graveyard, digging at one of the graves earns you a toy
10:41sword, which you can give to one of your children should you choose to have any.
10:45Furthermore, if you read the gravestone, it is inscribed with that famous line of dialogue.
10:56Foreign Plant, Among Us
11:06Unless you're the killer in Among Us, you'll be given different tasks to complete while
11:10trying to suss out which player isn't to be trusted.
11:13On the Mira HQ map, one of those possible tasks is to water the plants.
11:18When doing so, you'll likely notice that one of them looks exactly like a Korok, the
11:23little woodland folk we all hunted for in Breath of the Wild.
11:27However, although the leaf face is different, the size and shape of the plant in Among Us
11:32is similar to a specific Korok, Makar from The Wind Waker.
11:45Ode to Korok, Assassin's Creed Odyssey
11:54Sticking with the Koroks, there's a wonderful nod to them tucked away on an island in Assassin's
11:59Creed Odyssey.
12:01At Pandora's Cove in Malise, near the edge on a small island, you can find a Circle of
12:06Rocks.
12:07In the middle is a figure composed of stone, with stick arms and a leaf face.
12:11Not only is the figure obviously meant to represent a Korok, but the Circle of Rocks
12:16is also one of the more commonly occurring Korok puzzles in Breath of the Wild.
12:21Only after filling an empty spot in the circle would Link be greeted with a ya-ha-ha and
12:26given a seed used to expand his inventory.
12:39Forgotten Hero, World of Warcraft
12:50World of Warcraft pays tribute to multiple fantasy IPs, including Zelda.
12:55In the original version of the game, and then WoW Classic, you can find a wrecked ship in
13:00Un'Goro Crater, a nod to Link's Awakening.
13:03Not far from there, in Marshall's Refuge, is a green-clad warrior gnome named Lincoln,
13:08who has lost his memories.
13:10Lincoln's questline involves magically enhancing his sword in order to defeat the Blazerunner,
13:15a villain who stole the Golden Flame, a powerful artifact from Lincoln's homeland that just
13:20so happens to be in the shape of a triangle.
13:28Doing this for Lincoln earns you his boomerang and the aptly named Sword of Mastery.
13:34While the quest to defeat Blazerunner is called It's Dangerous to Go Alone, the opening
13:38quest after finding the raft is named It's a Secret to Everybody, another famous line
13:44from the series.
13:51The Master Spoon
13:53Hamtaro – Ham Ham Heartbreak
14:00At a certain point in this adorable adventure, Hamtaro will be tasked with gathering three
14:05marbles.
14:06After doing so, players can take them to a pedestal, grab onto a hilt that looks remarkably
14:11like that of the Master Sword, and pull out a giant spoon.
14:24The whole sequence is obviously a parody of Link getting his legendary blade from A Link
14:29to the Past.
14:30The three marbles are the same colors as the three orb-shaped pendants Link gathers during
14:35the first part of the game, and the music even sounds like a legally distinct version
14:41of the tune that plays when Link lifts the Master Sword above his head.
14:58Powerful Croissant Undertale
15:08Toby Fox's Undertale features a deep-cut reference to a minor item in the Zelda series.
15:14In the hotlands, players will meet Muffet, an anthropomorphic spider holding a bake sale.
15:19Clicking on her croissant makes you think it looks like some sort of powerful bracelet
15:24before realizing it's just a croissant.
15:26The croissant's sprite looks nearly identical to the power bracelet found in games like
15:31Link's Awakening and the Oracle games, just turned the opposite way.
15:36The item lets Link lift and move heavy objects, but we doubt many caught this reference during
15:41their playthroughs of Undertale.
15:48Far From Home – Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare
15:56The Wind Waker is one of my personal favorite Zelda games, and clearly, someone who worked
16:01on Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare feels the same way.
16:05By the docks on the Driftwood Shores map, you can find a big red boat with the name
16:10King of Red Dandelions on the side.
16:13This is an obvious nod to Link's companion in that game, the talking boat, the King of
16:18Red Lions.
16:19Additionally, looking past the boat out to sea, you'll notice the familiar shape of
16:24the nearby landmass, as it's extremely close to that of Outset Island, Link's home in
16:30Wind Waker.
16:31It even included the watchtower and bridge that connects the island's two peaks.
16:41Shoot for the Morning Light – Tom Clancy's The Division 2
16:51The Warlords of New York expansion for The Division 2 features one of the coolest Zelda
16:56easter eggs.
16:57Located by the docks in the Two Bridges region is a sign that reads,
17:01When water fills the lake, shoot for the morning light.
17:04This phrase can be found at Lake Hylia in Ocarina of Time, hinting to shoot the rising
17:09sun after completing the Water Temple to earn the Fire Arrows.
17:14This goes beyond a mere reference though.
17:16If you do so in The Division 2, your equipped weapon will gain a magazine full of fire bullets.
17:22A pretty good thing to have, making your next fire fight quite literal.
17:36A Shared Past – Enter the Gungeon
17:48Enter the Gungeon is one of many indie games inspired by The Legend of Zelda, and so the
17:53developers included an unlockable character who is one giant easter egg.
17:58The bullet starts with Blasphemy, a sword able to shoot beams so long as your health
18:03is full, an ability Link has in several games.
18:07Playing through the bullet's past reveals Blasphemy came from an older, dying relative,
18:12similar to a scene in A Link to the Past.
18:14Moreover, Bullet then has to stop the evil wizard Agahnim, a play on A Link to the Past's
18:20Agahnim.
18:21After doing so by knocking his energy blast back at him, you face the evil king, Cannon,
18:26a big pig monster that's obviously a stand in for Ganon.
18:34Upon his defeat, you even get to stab him in the head, as several Links have done to
18:39Ganon before.
18:40The developers clearly have a specific love for A Link to the Past though, since the bullet's
18:45alternate costume is a pink bunny, a nod to the form Link takes when he first enters the
18:50dark world in the Super Nintendo Classic.
19:02What's one of your favorite nods to the Zelda series found in another game?
19:05Share it with us in the comments.
