The Potsdam Conference subsequently takes place, during which Mountbatten's area of command is expanded, and he is instructed to prepare for the Japanese surrender following the use of the atomic bomb. In a significant political shift, Churchill is ousted from office, much to Mountbatten's dismay, and is succeeded by Attlee, who participates in the conference.
