Following the conclusion of the Far East war and the ensuing turmoil, Mountbatten prioritizes the release of prisoners of war, a task in which he receives significant assistance from Lady Mountbatten. He also makes the contentious decision to employ the remaining Japanese as a police force. As time progresses, Mountbatten finds himself increasingly entangled in various political issues, including anti-British protests and strikes instigated by communists in Singapore, efforts to preserve the monarchy in Siam, and initial British interventions aimed at maintaining order in French Indo-China. In the Dutch East Indies, the British face considerable challenges amid the Dutch-Indonesian conflict.

Mountbatten successfully averts a potential crisis during Nehru's visit to Singapore by taking personal control of the situation, subsequently embarking on a fruitful tour of Australia and New Zealand with his wife. In May 1946, he transfers the governorship to MacDonald and returns to England, where he is honored with the Sword of Honour and the Freedom of the City of London. This period culminates in his elevation to the title of Earl Mountbatten of Burma and his appointment as a Knight of the Garter.
