By 1957, alongside the Minister of Defence, Sandys, Mountbatten undertook a significant restructuring of the Navy, which remained actively engaged in various global emergencies, including those in Cyprus, Aden, and Jordan.
In 1959, Mountbatten was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, where he implemented extensive reforms in defense policy despite facing considerable opposition. The following year, in February 1960, his daughter Pamela wed, but the same year also brought the sorrowful news of Lady Mountbatten's passing during a tour in the Far East. In 1962, Prime Minister MacMillan persuaded him to postpone his retirement, leading to his involvement in the consolidation of the three armed services under a unified Ministry of Defence. Ultimately, Mountbatten retired in 1965.
