00:00Hello everyone, welcome back to day number three of the Canadian Skating Championships.
00:16I'm Ted Barton in the studio in Vancouver, Lisa Carrier joining us in Montreal, the synchronized
00:22senior program coming up in just a few minutes, a few moments, Lisa, thank you once again
00:27for joining us, of course, the final synchronized event of these championships, and we've got
00:32a couple things to cover here, want to talk a little bit, first of all, for the fans that
00:36don't know so much about that, about the team of Elite 12, what is that?
00:40Yeah, so Elite 12 was basically a new division of synchronized skating, a new team size that
00:47was started by the ISU in 2021 as a trial effort to see if we could make smaller teams
00:53to get into the Olympics, as we know, the size of the teams is a large factor affecting
00:59the Olympics decision to include Sakura or not, so they created the Elite 12 division
01:04in 2021, we have seen a number of teams around the world form, both in Finland and the United
01:10States and Canada as well, and for this year's nationals, the Elite 12 senior division is
01:16included with the regular senior teams, which is exciting because we're seeing instead of
01:21the three typical senior teams that we have, we have four teams competing in the senior
01:24competition this evening, and any time that we can get more teams competing at nationals,
01:29it's exciting because as a synchro fan, I get to watch more synchro.
01:33Now we have just about two minutes left, I just want to quickly cover, for those fans
01:36that don't know much about, one minute left, for those fans that don't know much about
01:42synchronized skating versus the ones that do, which of those fans who don't know so
01:45much about it watch for?
01:48So there's identifiable elements that you'll see within the free program.
01:53You'll see an artistic element, which will be a circle shape or a wheel.
01:57You'll see creative element, which is a lift, and another lift, which is the group lift.
02:02You'll see intersections, the boxes, triangles, whip intersections.
02:06You'll see the move element, which is your spirals, no hold element, where you're doing
02:09steps without holding on, pair elements, pivoting blocks, twizzles, and all sorts of fun stuff.
02:15Okay, here goes, and the Synchronized Seniors starts right now.
03:15Okay, here goes, and the Synchronized Seniors starts right now.
03:44Welcome back, everyone, to the Synchronized Seniors free program coming up in just a few
04:04moments.
04:05Lisa Carrier joining me from Montreal.
04:06Lisa, you know, carry on, because you've got a couple other notes you want to bring to
04:09the audience.
04:10Yes, of course.
04:12So, in the senior category in Canada, we have four teams this year, and a lot of times,
04:17historians and people that have been in the sport for decades, they look at the numbers
04:20and they say, well, how come years ago we had 20 teams in senior, and now we have four?
04:24Is that a bad sign for synchro?
04:26And what I always say to them is, we are so fortunate in Canada to have four senior teams,
04:31but three world-class teams.
04:33Keep an eye out for them tonight.
04:34They are phenomenal in their skating skills and the level of execution on the ice.
04:39While we might not have 20 teams like we used to, it's because the level of commitment
04:44and dedication to the sport that's required at the senior level is so big that not just
04:51anyone can do it.
04:52And let's just point out, once again, for those who don't know, that Les Suprêmes are
04:57the three-time reigning world champions, so that is incredible.
05:02That shows the level of synchronized skating in our country, maybe not the depth of teams,
05:05but the quality.
05:06It's all there.
05:08What is up next?
05:10So we're going to be seeing the Black Gold Elite team starting to take the ice.
05:15Nexus is following that.
05:16Then we have Nova.
05:18And finally, our current national title holders are Les Suprêmes.
05:24And we are excited to see some fantastic themes and stories laid out on that ice and unbelievable
05:30skating skills.
05:31And what international events will these teams be going to prior to the World Synchronized
05:36Skating Championships?
05:37So Nexus will be going to the French Cup and Lumière Cup.
05:42Nova will be traveling to Boston for the ISU Challenger Series there, as well as Lumière
05:46Cup in the Netherlands.
05:48And Les Suprêmes will be joining Nova in Boston and also attending the Cup of Dresden
05:52in Germany.
05:53But these are all ISU Challenger Series.
05:56The ISU has a world ranking system where points are awarded to teams based on their performance
06:01at the ISU Challenger events, as well as their World Championship performances.
06:06So for synchronized skating, unlike the other disciplines, this is not the end of the season
06:11or even the middle of it.
06:12This is the very beginning of it.
06:13And they have kind of a series or a series of competitions, ISU competitions coming up
06:18as their season starts and finishing with the World Synchronized Skating Championships.
06:24Where are that?
06:25Where are they this year?
06:27They're being held in April in Helsinki, Finland, which many consider the capital of
06:32synchronized skating.
06:33There's a plethora of teams there and such incredible quality of teams over in Finland.
06:38And it's a big hub for fans as well.
06:42So it's always a very supportive fan base, much like Synchro Worlds here in Canada.
06:47Well, we'll step aside as we get ready for this event.
06:51You'll point out the elements, we'll be giving replays of some of the things that you can
06:55be looking for, for those people on the SkateBug radio in the building.
06:59We thank you for joining us and also fans from around the world.
07:03And I'm sure we have a lot of fans from around the world that are watching this to see where
07:07is Canada at this season?
07:10What are we up against?
07:11Well, welcome to the broadcast and we'll be back right after this as the Senior Synchronized
07:16Pre-Program begins in just a few moments.
07:46You want to do that again?
08:12And we're back and we can see the stands are all virtually full here with fans from
08:17around Montreal and Quebec, cheering on their teams from Quebec.
08:23But also we have a good audience for the senior men and the junior women this afternoon.
08:28So the building begins to fill up and I know tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, this building
08:32will be at capacity as we see the first team take to the ice.
08:40This team has traveled all the way from Calgary, Alberta, to compete at these national championships.
08:45I learned from their coach earlier today, although they are a team of 12, they've been
08:49practicing most of the season as a team of 10.
08:52So as you can imagine, adding those extra skaters, they're fortunate and grateful to
08:56have a team of 12, but adjusting and making those adjustments to the extra skaters comes
09:03at a cost as well.
09:04Lots of training hours.
09:05They're out of the Calgary Synchronized Skating Club, out of Alberta, Northwest Territory,
09:19Nunavut section.
09:20It was great to have them here demonstrating that team of 12.
09:26And the last time that Calgary had a team, actually it wasn't Calgary, it was Edmonton,
09:32the last time that Alberta had a team compete in the senior division at a national championship,
09:36as we mentioned yesterday, was 2002.
09:38So really great to see representation from a team outside of Ontario and Quebec, which
09:43the other teams in the senior category are from.
09:48And we hope to see even more representation across the country in the years to come.
09:53You can just feel in the building, the buzz and the energy, unlike the other disciplines,
09:58it's just, it's way louder.
10:00And so you may not hear us, you may not hear us in some cases, because the audience is
10:04so loud.
10:05We'll try to speak where you can hear us, it may not be for very much.
10:11But we can see the fans here with a smile on their face, full of energy, loving being
10:15on the camera.
10:17It's really the best discipline in our sport of figure skating to attend from an energy
10:23perspective.
10:24Lots of energy in the stands.
10:26And for those who may be fans of other disciplines, you might not know that these teams get a
10:30short official practice of about 12 minutes on the day of the competition.
10:35And that that happened this morning at around 1130 and from 1130 until 730, so eight hours,
10:41they're off the ice as a team, resting, doing their hair and makeup.
10:45But now they're getting their blades wet, they're getting down to their knee and ankle
10:49again.
10:50And then they're going to go out there and perform.
10:52Here is our first team, Black Gold.
10:57The team's free program is called Mirage, and it shares the difficult journey of warriors
11:02who leave home to find water for their families, only to discover the water they traveled for
11:08was a mirage all along.
11:21The water is history.
11:51The water is history.
12:21The water is history.
12:51The water is history.
13:21The water is history.
13:52The water is history.
13:58The water is history.
14:04The water is history.
14:13The water is history.
14:21The water is history.
14:29The water is history.
14:37The water is history.
14:45The water is history.
14:53The water is history.
15:01The water is history.
15:09The water is history.
15:17The water is history.
15:26I always love hearing new music in synchronized skating.
15:42There's so many pieces that have been used over and over again, and I thought this was
15:46a really nice original piece of music and a creative story told from beginning to end.
15:56These dresses were actually made by one of the moms of the skaters on the team, which
16:02I thought was really interesting.
16:04Beautifully, beautifully made.
16:07So much work goes into preparing and managing these teams.
16:10It's not just like one skater or two skaters and pairs and dance.
16:13It's quite extraordinary.
16:16It is.
16:17And let's take a look at some of the replays from their program this evening.
16:21Beautiful artistic opening.
16:24Looking at their entry into their whip.
16:26So here you see the entry variation where they do a combination of different pair moves
16:30and free skate elements.
16:32And then they're looking to have these two C shapes as they approach back to back, going
16:37through at the same time and staying on one foot.
16:42Their next element was the group lift.
16:44They were attempting, I believe, a level three out of four possible levels of difficulty.
16:49Looks like they were awarded a level two here.
16:52You see the difficult exit as they flip out of that group lift.
16:56Incredibly hard to do.
16:58Next, we're going to look at the twizzles.
17:00Nice extended free leg for the added layer of difficulty with the hands above shoulders
17:06also adding to the difficulty in that element.
17:09But nice control through those twizzles.
17:12And then here they are doing their second twizzle around the corner as they change into
17:16two lines.
17:18Next was their move element.
17:20Nice flexibility.
17:22This year we're seeing a lot more teams do the spiral into the Beelman requiring flexibility
17:27in multiple field moves, not just one, as teams have been required to do in the past.
17:32Their pair element here.
17:34I love the creativity with the throw loop entry.
17:37Unfortunate fall on that element means that they'll get the minus one for each skater
17:41that went down, but then that will also reflect in their overall mark.
17:46This was their choreographic series on the diagonal.
17:48So that is part of the no hold element is doing features to add difficulty to their
17:53program.
17:55And that was the series done on the diagonal.
17:59Next up, we're going to see their pivoting block.
18:02Looking for those turns to happen at the same time and the judges need to see that they're
18:07being done on correct edges.
18:09Incredibly hard to do with the push and pull forces in that element.
18:15Nice creative lift showing.
18:18Their devotion to the character and the program that they're performing.
18:23And a strong finish.
18:29You could tell that these skaters really enjoyed the music that they were skating to.
18:33They had fun out there and they've got some characters on the team.
18:41Now this team was actually around last year.
18:42They competed in the elite 12 division from the team last year and nine of them came back
18:47to skate again this season.
18:49And my message to skaters out there, the longer you can keep your team together, the stronger
18:53your team becomes.
18:55There's no overnight successes in synchro.
18:58It takes the time together to forge the unity in the team that helps you rise.
19:04Yeah.
19:05And the more bonding they'll be and lifelong friends.
19:08It's something special through not just these moments, but later on in life as well.
19:13And you can see the team is so connected.
19:15And the Nationals here, but they'll carry this friendship back home for years to come.
19:21But you're right.
19:22You know, those teams, and we talked about that, that with these synchronized teams, the
19:25name stays the same, but the players are different.
19:28Same thing with the hockey or soccer or baseball team.
19:31And so if you can keep your players on the team for a while, it's going to get better.
19:35Let's take a look at the scores for Black Gold in the free program.
19:38An 83.06.
19:40First team out with a total competition score of 127.80.
19:46Well, that's a 15 or so point improvement from their last competition.
19:52So they're happy with that score.
19:56Quick math there.
19:58There you go.
19:59Well done.
20:00Next up, from Ontario, Nexus, out of the Burlington Skating Centre.
20:05Coaches Shelley Summington and Jennifer Beauchamp-Crichton.
20:10And this is a program that's been influenced by so many people.
20:14They're about to take us on a journey to explore the vast beauty and infinite possibility of
20:18outer space in their program called Amongst the Stars.
20:34Music.
20:47It is a bright object and it's obviously rotating because it's flashing.
20:52It's way out in the distance.
20:55It's actually rotating in a very interesting fashion because the lights come around almost
21:00on time.
21:02As we look back at the Earth, it's up at about 11 o'clock.
21:07About, well, maybe 10 or 12 diameters.
21:13I don't know whether that does you any good, but there's something up there.

24:44Music.
24:45Music.
24:46Music.
24:47And what a beautiful performance from the team.
24:57I feel that this program truly is a masterpiece.
25:00masterpiece and when they're able to perform it so strongly
25:05The message of the program just really breathes through the screen
25:10That's beautiful interesting former national champion Jeremy Abbott is also part of the choreography team along with Shelly
25:17Simington Barnett and Jennifer Beauchamp and shelter and Mary Wanamaker. So a whole team
25:23working on the girl
25:25Absolutely, and I know that they also had Kathy Dalton working with the team and Julie Marquardt visited with them
25:31So the coaches really celebrate the collaborative effort that goes into making these programs and all of the people that are part of their journey
25:38Such a beautiful picture here in the opening
25:43This fantastic love it when the team is close together like that such a powerful image
25:50It's great for those of us watching from home if no one else
25:53Yeah, but just such a feeling of vastness and weightlessness throughout this program I really saw that they were
26:01Channeling the energy of outer space. Look at that center lift one girl lifting
26:07Another skater in the air incredible strength required. This is one of those tricky elements. That's actually a box intersection
26:14Hard to identify because you don't have to see the shape attached before going in this year
26:18All right, looking at the pivoting block here incredibly straight lines nice timing of the turns beautiful pressure on that
26:26Inside rocker exit edge and just gorgeous
26:31Loving this death spiral look at the how they go from the inside the board inside edge to the back outside edge here
26:38If you don't know what you're looking for it happens in the blink of an eye, but such a complicated element
26:43To master and so many layers of difficulty there
26:47Twizzle element beautifully done as they change from four lines into a different formation
26:57So much fluidity throughout each movement they do the commitment that they have
27:02To that artistic style is commendable looking at their artistic wheel here
27:07they go from the s wheel with a beautiful partner lift into a four spoke and just
27:13seamlessly done throughout this whole element
27:17Taking beautiful pictures on the ice
27:21And their moves great speed throughout this element nice flexibility and just so much going on
27:29beautiful to watch group lift here syncopated entries and
27:34You see the two different positions for an added layer of difficulty
27:38There's a split lift and then they change on to the side axis with the Beelman position
27:42Incredibly hard to do and requiring so much versatility from their athletes
27:49Final element was the whip intersection beautiful shape going in nice symmetry a little bump in the middle of the line
27:56Which will affect their technical call, please but beautifully done
28:01three program scores
28:04Set
28:07141 point nine seven for Nexus with a total competition score
28:13210.56
28:17Huge improvement from their last competition. They're on the right track moving in the right direction
28:22In first place
28:31You can see during the replays of the last or you could hear during the replays of the last team Nexus the screening that
28:38Cheering that was going on for this team from Quebec Noah
28:42coached by Dominic Barth and Nadine Dukas
28:47And their upcoming program is about the damaging effects of over analyzing things
28:52Causing stress doubt and anxiety their program is called
28:56overthinker
29:16A
29:23Person who thinks all the time
29:27Has nothing to think about except thought
29:31So he loses touch with reality
29:35And lives in a world of illusions
29:46Oh
30:16Oh
30:46Oh
31:04Is how you feel inside your head
31:16You
31:26The way to become one with the universe is to trust it
31:34Seeing that all life is a magnificent illusion and there is absolutely nothing
31:41to be afraid of
31:47And
32:00Then you think
32:09I am worried
32:16Because I can't stop worrying
32:24I'm worried because I worry and you see where that can lead you
32:29That is what we call anxiety
32:34No amount of anxiety makes any difference to anything that's gonna happen
32:46You
33:11We must
33:16Oh
33:24What an impactful performance for that team
33:28as you said off air Ted the lyrics in the spoken word during the song really got you to think and
33:35Connect to their theme in a whole different dimension
33:38Yeah, if I can just mention what was unique about that or is watching the beautiful shapes and beautiful performance
33:44But I was also listening to what was being said and what what it meant and so their movement
33:50Supported the meaning of that song and that's a completely different approach. Maybe some people didn't like it. I liked it. It hit me
33:58And what do I know? That's that's what they were going for
34:02You know, this team is so proud of how hard they've worked to make their program unique in each element
34:07We'll go through some of those nuances right now
34:09But when the sport is already so complex and they're so good that they're able to add even more layers of difficulty
34:15It speaks to the level of the team. Look at this beautiful death spiral pulling one hand
34:19That's so hard to do and then flying on the exit for the difficult exit
34:25absolutely incredible
34:28Nice group lifts here
34:30You see the variability in those positions
34:33Just so bang on
34:36changing position from that spiral
34:39To the Beelman and the split lift
34:45So hard to do that as a team to get your timing to get the speed to make it all work and make it look
34:51Easy check out this pivoting block. This is something new this year for the senior
34:54They have to do the pivoting block in lines of differing lengths so they can make a pyramid or a diamond shape
35:00But we're used to seeing this element done in like a 4x4
35:04Block shape and it's so much harder to do it like they did but they nailed it and made it look easy
35:10Looking at the whip here
35:12Nice symmetry going through good timing of those turns and so much speed
35:18going into the twizzles great unison of those rotations and of the position during the twizzle and
35:24Check out how they're twizzling and pivoting that block. Oh my goodness if I could express how hard that is to do
35:32Amazing
35:34Nice field moves here. I love their use of creativity throughout this element as well
35:41Unfortunate fall, but they got right back up like nothing happened
35:44That's what you want in the synchro team check out that lift in the middle of the artistic wheel
35:49So impactful as those lines continue to intersect showing that feeling of chaos and anxiety
35:56Anxiety
35:58So much speed throughout the no-hold great precision and lineup throughout the element, let's take a look at the scores
36:06the free program scores
36:12144.90 first in the free program with a
36:17220.03 total competition score as they take over the lead
36:21With one team to come
36:24Fantastic, they had a goal score and they beat their goal. So well done Nova
36:29That will feel great
36:33Our final team is from Quebec the reigning world champions of Canadian champions less a problem
36:41I
36:50Don't blink because this program is packed with excitement
36:53The free program is inspired by life's journey of ups and downs and finding the balance between the good and bad
36:59That lives within each of us their program is called human
37:11I
37:41You
38:11You
38:41You
39:11I'm only human and I
39:24Cuz I'm
39:41I
40:11Am I an angel
40:41I
41:11I
41:42You know another exceptional performance from Lacey friend senior senior
41:47This is a team that is known for their consistency under pressure. They are
41:52Incredibly strong but to be able to perform time and time again at that level is unbelievable. Well done
41:59That was gorgeous
42:01You
42:06Know for those who are trained
42:08Synchro eyes, I'm sure you will have appreciated all of the difficulty in this program. Check out this opening
42:14This is not something that is for points specifically
42:17but they add these layers of difficulty to their program because they're just such talented athletes and so
42:24Creative and coming up with these new things that they could do in the sport
42:28Nice group lift good timing of the rotations and nice unison of the positions and
42:34a complex entry there with the cartwheel exit
42:40Really nice field moves if you caught it
42:42They actually did a shoot the duck into their standing upright extension so hard to do requires so much strength
42:49This is another example of the diamond shape in the pivot block at the beginning of the season
42:54Which is thought that this element would be nearly impossible to do and here they are mastering it
43:02Check out this twizzle entry split jump Sal cow twizzle
43:07Like I'm speechless that was unbelievable so difficult to do and they make it look so easy
43:14That is the magic of a good synchronized skating team
43:18Beautifully done throughout the twizzle section
43:21Beautifully done throughout the twizzle section
43:25Looking at their death spiral next this is one of those elements that they are aiming for
43:31Difficulty a little bit of spacing issue there. It looked like the two
43:35skaters collided which can be incredibly dangerous
43:39But they seem to be okay
43:41Whip intersection
43:42Beautifully done great spacing and great speed
43:46Next looking at their no-hold again. Look at this challenging series of turns loop jump half loop
43:53like
43:54Just unbelievable what they're able to incorporate into their programs because of the strength of the individual skaters
44:00And this is a team as we mentioned
44:02They've had the smallest turnover ever in in Lacey Prem senior history
44:07And when you start with the base of skaters that are as strong as this group the sky is the limit
44:17Final
44:20Element before the creative lift was the artistic wheel
44:24Just so much creativity in that wheel element and great skating skills
44:30beautiful highlights
44:33And they finished in their creative lift
44:37This is one of those elements that really has to embody the character of the program and they sure did
44:44And one thing that inspired the coaches to build this program was sharing the message that you can be champions
44:50And you can be healthy and you can have values and be balanced
44:54And the message of the program really is we are human. We all have good
44:57We all have bad and we have to create the balance to be the good people in the world that we want to be
45:03That's something that they teach to their athletes. It's values that they believe within Lacey Prem organization
45:08And really cool how sport can teach life lessons, not just athletic lessons
45:12That's so nice that this discipline has the stories and the thoughts and the messages behind
45:19The theme of the programs and you're able to articulate that and give that to the audience
45:24I love that and I wish it was more in some of the other disciplines
45:26Of course ice dance has that but not for everyone but for many and the singles the pairs don't have that at least yet
45:33To work in progress
45:34But I appreciate all the coaches that shared their time with me as well to give some backstory behind the teams because I think
45:40There's so much to love about the sport and anything that I can do to help translate and build that love for the sport
45:46It's my pleasure to be able to do it and here are the free program scores for
45:50In the free skate with a 223.73 total competition score but they are the Canadian champions and look how close that is now getting
46:03223.73
46:05223.73
46:07223.73
46:09223.73
46:12223.73
46:14223.73
46:16223.73
46:18223.73
46:20three down to ten point five six Wow Nova wins the free program and that's
46:28anytime you can have strong competition within a country as hard as it is for
46:33these teams to go against each other it builds a stronger sport within the
46:37country yes each team is challenging the others to do their best and to build the
46:42strongest team they possibly can amazing as we take a look at the standings and
46:49you're right absolutely right success breeds success and you want to have a
46:53competition you don't ever like to give away your title but to be pushed to
46:58preserve it or to be defeated in it never is a bad thing it's always a new
47:03opportunity new doors are open and forces you to perhaps look a different
47:07direction to improve I think the hardest thing is to be the leader in a category
47:14because when you can see a leader you have an idea to work toward and to chase
47:20but to stay at the top of your game year after year is one of the hardest things
47:23you can do in sport because you have to continue to innovate and create to stay
47:29ahead of everyone else looking at the top three teams Nexus's program I felt
47:37was absolutely enchanting it brought us through this beautiful journey of being
47:42in outer space the galaxy the stars the feeling of wonder and weightlessness and
47:46I loved how committed they were to their theme from beginning to end so many
47:53moments in there that were inspired by the theme and on top of that they had
47:59the beautiful skating skills that they are known for moving on now to look at
48:04Nova such an unique program as you said Ted with the spoken word this is a team
48:11that encouraged the viewers to go back and listen to the lyrics of the song
48:15because it really does tell the story that they are portraying but the athletes
48:20did such a nice job of performing each element to their potential exactly the
48:26way that they would on their best practice day with an elevated level of
48:29performance but they did each element really really well and a strong finish
48:35in that pose and finally reigning world champions reigning Canadian champions
48:43and current Canadian champions Les Supremes senior knock it out of the park
48:49with this free program skate powerful elements great innovation and creativity
48:58tremendous performance from a synchro aspect with the straight lines the
49:02precision the details everything looked so united and how lucky we are as
49:09Canadians to be able to have this level of synchro inspiring the next generation
49:13right at home much more to come in the future that's for sure so that concludes
49:20the coverage of the senior synchronized event Lisa Carrier thank you so much for
49:25all your expertise your brilliance and mostly for your pure passion the love
49:30of synchronized skating and bringing that to our audience so much appreciate
