00:00PTD Sports is back and today we will talk to Maymax, the inaugural champion of the Tinoy Wrestling Promotion, Puso Wrestling.
00:12Good morning.
00:14Good morning.
00:15Thank you for joining us this morning.
00:18Let's start with the history of Puso Wrestling.
00:24Yes, Puso Wrestling is a localized version of wrestling like WWE in the United States.
00:32I think in the 1980s we have this Tinoy Wrestling and then we revived it in 2014.
00:39I am fortunate to be part of that first batch that revived it.
00:45I've been wrestling since 2014, so I'm a pro wrestler for 10 years.
00:53Puso Wrestling's promotion started last year.
00:57Last year, okay.
01:00Sir, can you share with us as a pioneer of wrestling here in the Philippines,
01:07what were the challenges before it was established?
01:11For sure, there are a lot of pros and cons, especially for our wrestling fans.
01:19They say a lot about WWE and how the Filipinos do it.
01:24You know that here in the Philippines.
01:26But what can you say about the struggles we went through?
01:30Yes, the struggle is true.
01:32It's really proud because we started from scratch.
01:35Back in 2014, we were the only ones who trained.
01:39We started training in a boxing gym, a boxing ring with a very hard pad.
01:46We were the only ones who started and trained ourselves.
01:50Throughout the years, there are some international stars that came from WWE
01:56like Tajiri, Ho Ho Dun, Chilli Willy, to help us to be more polished and better at wrestling.
02:04When it comes to stereotypes, I think it is the usual way of the Filipinos
02:12to compare others in the stereotype to WWE.
02:15Your body should be like this.
02:17Yes, that's what the fans say.
02:19In WWE, it's all about being tough and having a big body.
02:25But here locally, it's all about being big guys.
02:30It's like everyone is the big showdown.
02:34We always get that, but they probably didn't see the part that we are trying hard.
02:39We are really doing our best to be in the best shape.
02:42Of course, that's pro-wrestling physically.
02:44You should be in the best shape of your life.
02:48They didn't see the injuries and the struggle that we are facing.
02:53Which is fine, it's okay.
02:59We really train.
03:00Especially for me, I started before the pandemic.
03:05I was almost 300 pounds.
03:07I decided to change that.
03:13How can I become a top champion?
03:15How can I become a champion?
03:17I started to lose weight.
03:19I think right now, I'm from 300 to 230 pounds.
03:28It's something to be proud of.
03:29You have to share with us how you did it.
03:32I realized that I've been wrestling for 10 years.
03:36What are my plans?
03:39How can I become a champion?
03:42I started by myself.
03:45I started to exercise and to go to the gym regularly.
03:49To eat healthy.
03:54I started to lose pounds.
03:56Then I started to level up my game in pro-wrestling.
04:06We have some wrestlers here in the Philippines
04:10who train and wrestle internationally.
04:14They bring that knowledge to us.
04:17That's where we level up our skills.
04:21I'm interested in how you got into wrestling.
04:26Like other people, it's like their childhood dream.
04:31To be wrestling, watching WWE.
04:33That's what we grew up with.
04:35I remember that I used to have figures.
04:38The small toys.
04:40I used to buy those.
04:41The Big Shots.
04:42I started as a fan.
04:45For me, I'm also a fan of physical sports.
04:49Before pro-wrestling, I also trained.
04:51I also did karate.
04:56All those physical stuff that I did.
05:02There are some groups of people
05:04that want to bring pro-wrestling back to the Philippines.
05:07What if we revive Pinoy wrestling?
05:10In 2014, we decided to train
05:17in a boxing gym.
05:19We started from scratch.
05:20That's why I'm proud.
05:22We have our own gym.
05:24It's a proper wrestling ring.
05:26We have our own gym where we train.
05:30What we're taught comes from professional international wrestlers.
05:35Sir, we have a wrestling belt here.
05:42Speaking of a champion,
05:44can you tell us what belt this is?
05:48This is the Pusong Pinoy Wrestling Championship.
05:51This is the top championship in our promotion,
05:55which is Puso Wrestling.
05:57You said you're the first, right?
05:59The first champion.
06:00There was a tournament last year.
06:03I fought against three wrestlers.
06:09I fought against three wrestlers.
06:11At the same time?
06:12No.
06:13It was an elimination round.
06:14Versus one.
06:15It was an elimination round.
06:17In the finals on November 30,
06:19I was crowned as the inaugural Pusong Pinoy Wrestling Champion.
06:23How was your journey to get this championship belt?
06:29I can say for myself that it is one of the most inspiring journeys in Pinoy wrestling.
06:38There are a lot of strugglers.
06:40I've been in the pro wrestling scene since 2014.
06:44I've been wrestling for 10 years.
06:46I thought about retiring,
06:48but I don't know.
06:49Maybe there are fans who support me.
06:53There are people who believe in me.
06:56I need to believe in myself.
06:58Despite the fact that there are other promotions that closed,
07:02I was injured,
07:04I dislocated my knee,
07:05and then came back.
07:07I became overweight,
07:09almost 300 pounds.
07:10I pushed myself that nothing is impossible if you believe that you can be a champion.
07:19But in the struggles that you mentioned,
07:22and in the inspiring moments that you went through,
07:27what are the highlights of your journey to become a champion?
07:35What are the things that you will never forget?
07:38I think in a bad way,
07:41I was injured in 2017 during a wrestling match.
07:44I dislocated my knee.
07:46During a match?
07:47During a match.
07:48So I've been out for a year.
07:50So I think it entered my mind that I should retire or not continue.
07:56But there are people who are my inspiration.
08:00They don't forget me.
08:02They ask,
08:03when will you come back?
08:04That's what pushed me.
08:05After one year, I came back.
08:08After the pandemic,
08:11we are fortunate that there is still wrestling after the pandemic.
08:17So,
08:18inspiration for this one.
08:20Because there are a lot of struggles.
08:21I've been,
08:22I've tried many times to challenge for a top championship in other promotions before.
08:29And this is just,
08:30this is the first championship,
08:32top championship that I won here.
08:34One of the challenges of an athlete is when you get injured.
08:40And you mentioned your knee injury.
08:43Apart from the people who became an inspiration for you,
08:49what was your drive to come back and recover?
08:55Aside from the fans,
08:57I thought they might forget me because I wasn't in wrestling for a year.
09:02But when they see me,
09:04they ask,
09:05Max, when will you come back?
09:07And then for my son,
09:08I already have a son.
09:10He is also my inspiration.
09:13He sees me wrestling.
09:15And that's it.
09:16It also came to my mind.
09:17He said,
09:18Daddy, you should win.
09:19So, that was my inspiration to push and to become a champion.
09:24With that being said,
09:25you have a baby.
09:27Can you share with us,
09:31is your wrestling full-time?
09:33Or do you still have a life outside wrestling?
09:36What do you do after wrestling?
09:40It's not full-time.
09:43The goal is to be a full-time job.
09:45But right now,
09:47I am a father.
09:49And then,
09:50outside of wrestling,
09:51I work in a BPO as a quality analyst.
09:54So, it's a challenge in time.
09:57You have to balance and manage your time.
10:01I'm very proud because
10:03for me,
10:04I was able to accompany him despite of the time outside of work.
10:08I have a day job.
10:09And then,
10:10every Sunday,
10:12at least once a week,
10:14we have training to do wrestling.
10:16Actually, this is good, Sheila.
10:18How old is your baby?
10:20He's 10 years old.
10:21He started wrestling in 2014,
10:24the same year.
10:26Actually, this is good.
10:27He really saw you.
10:30One day,
10:31when his son grew up,
10:33he would tell his classmates,
10:36you know,
10:37my dad is a wrestling champion.
10:40And that's what really inspires kids.
10:43I mean, of course, they look up to their parents.
10:46Especially,
10:47while he's growing up,
10:49he saw that they compete.
10:51So, it will inspire him, probably.
10:53Do you want him to be a wrestler in the future?
10:56It depends on him.
10:57If he wants to be a pro wrestler,
11:01if he wants to be a pro wrestler,
11:03of course, we'll support him 100%.
11:05Going back to wrestling itself,
11:09and here in Puso,
11:12I'm sure there are a lot of critics here.
11:15So, can you tell us
11:17what you usually talk about
11:20or criticize about this event?
11:23Comments, yeah.
11:24Feedback from Filipinos.
11:27Analysts.
11:28There are a lot.
11:29First is,
11:30we're copying WWE.
11:32We're trying hard.
11:35Which is true.
11:36We are trying so hard.
11:37Yes.
11:38And then,
11:39the usual stereotype that
11:41you should have a big body.
11:44You should have muscles.
11:46Things like that.
11:49I don't think that will disappear.
11:53As long as they're engaged
11:55or interested in the product we're giving,
11:58there won't be a problem.
11:59And then,
12:00there are some critics that
12:03are good,
12:04that we're taking as a challenge,
12:07and we're really changing ourselves.
12:09Like what, sir?
12:10Like,
12:11when they see that I move slowly,
12:14of course,
12:16I saw that and I was challenged.
12:18Of course,
12:19I doubled my training
12:23to be more polished in the ring.
12:27When it comes to fitness,
12:31we try.
12:33Aside from wrestling,
12:35aside from training in pro wrestling once a week,
12:39during weekdays,
12:42I go to the gym.
12:43And I think other wrestlers
12:45also work out.
12:47They go to the gym during the weekend.
12:50Aside from the weekly training that I do.
12:54Sir, I have a question.
12:55How big do you think
12:57is the local scene of wrestling here in the Philippines
13:00since you started in 2014?
13:03I think it's already big.
13:04Like, before,
13:05there was a TV deal.
13:06And then,
13:10there are people that
13:12watch you on TV.
13:13There are things like that.
13:15And then,
13:17there's still a long way to go
13:19for our goal,
13:20which is to be a day job.
13:22But we are just happy
13:24that we are able to do our passion,
13:26that we are able to do what we want to do,
13:29which is to be a pro wrestler.
13:32Speaking of that, sir,
13:33just an addition.
13:34What is your goal?
13:36Because you said that you haven't reached your goal yet.
13:39So, what is our biggest goal or dream
13:42for local wrestling here in the country?
13:44For me, my personal goal is,
13:46aside from being a top champion,
13:48to be able to wrestle internationally.
13:51So, I wanted to start in Southeast Asia.
13:53There are also promotions in Southeast Asia,
13:56like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand.
13:58And then, if possible,
13:59to wrestle in Japan.
14:02And aside from that,
14:03I think our goal is
14:05from this pro wrestling,
14:07to become a day job.
14:08Like, this is what will support us
14:10in our daily needs.
14:14And,
14:15once we get to know each other,
14:18we will be able to inspire each other.
14:20Personally,
14:21my goal is
14:22throughout my journey in pro wrestling,
14:25at least there are one people who will say,
14:27Oh, Main Max can do it.
14:28I should be able to do it too.
14:30I should be a wrestler too.
14:31I should be a champion too.
14:33For me, my question is a bit technical.
14:35Because when you watch wrestling,
14:37they can only see this,
14:38like that.
14:40Their term is,
14:41right?
14:42Bardagulat.
14:43But what is the technicality
14:44of wrestling as a sport?
14:47I think,
14:48technicality is a mix of
14:51physical and entertainment.
14:53And then,
14:54telling a story inside the ring.
14:56So,
14:57we tell a story inside the ring.
15:00So, there are good guys
15:02and there are bad guys.
15:03So,
15:04usually,
15:05what people share is the good guy.
15:07And then,
15:10in the end,
15:11there will be a winner.
15:12And then,
15:13the important thing is
15:15we will have a reaction
15:17after the match.
15:19But how did you maintain
15:22this wrestling event
15:27and this organization,
15:29PUSO?
15:30How did you maintain this
15:31since 2014 up to now
15:33that it's still strong?
15:35Who are the people
15:37who get the funds here?
15:39The people behind
15:41PUSO Wrestling?
15:42Usually,
15:43someone started from us.
15:46And then,
15:47the biggest source of income
15:50is the fans
15:51who buy tickets.
15:52We also have merchandise.
15:54Like what I'm wearing.
15:55And then,
15:56those are the ways
15:57that they support us.
15:59And then,
16:00if they want to support us,
16:03we also find sponsorship.
16:06In the rings,
16:07we put the sponsor's logo there
16:10so that they can see
16:12their logos
16:13and support us.
16:15Why MainMax?
16:18MainMax is
16:21kind of my nickname.
16:23And then,
16:24MainMax,
16:25I want to be the main event,
16:27the main guy.
16:29Very interesting.
16:30Very deep.
16:32That's nice.
16:33But sir,
16:35MainMax,
16:37do you have here
16:38other than our events,
16:40do you have events
16:42for your grassroots program?
16:44So that,
16:45not only the adults,
16:48but also the youth.
16:50How do you encourage
16:51or invite
16:53those who want to participate?
16:54At the same time,
16:55this is also a way
16:56to spread the sport.
16:58Yes,
16:59on our Facebook page,
17:00which is Puso Wrestling,
17:01I think we started this year
17:04like a tryout
17:05or we call it a factory.
17:07That's where we encourage
17:10the people
17:12who want to try
17:13pro wrestling.
17:15That's where they will learn
17:17the basic moves
17:18or the basic exercises
17:20and drills that we do.
17:22You said you're doing a tryout.
17:23What do you look for
17:25in an athlete
17:26who wants to wrestle?
17:27Of course,
17:28they should be physically fit
17:29and then 100% commitment
17:31that they want to do this,
17:32that they want to be a pro wrestler.
17:34It can't be just a trip.
17:36Yes, just what you want.
17:37Just what you want.
17:38You should be fully committed.
17:39And then,
17:41outside of training,
17:42you should also be physically active.
17:44Like training in the gym,
17:46jogging,
17:47or what not
17:48that you do
17:49aside from the training.
17:51Okay,
17:52so now,
17:53this is your chance
17:54to message
17:55or invite
17:56all the wrestling fans
17:57out there.
17:59Yes,
18:00it's true
18:01that there's wrestling
18:02in the Philippines.
18:04If you want,
18:05this is your passion,
18:07this is your dream
18:08to become a pro wrestler,
18:09this is your dream
18:10to become a pro wrestler.
18:12Message,
18:13Puso Wrestling page.
18:14And then,
18:15we have tryouts.
18:19That's where you can learn
18:21the basic training
18:24and the drills
18:26that you should learn
18:28for you to start
18:29the pro wrestling.
18:31For your pro wrestling journey.
18:32Batiin, sir.
18:33I have something I want to greet.
18:37Your baby, sir.
18:39Hi to my son.
18:41We call him
18:42Pinoy Wrestling Baby,
18:43Nigel.
18:44And then,
18:46Puso Wrestling roster.
18:47Coach Fabio,
18:48Coach JDL,
18:50and the other,
18:51all the people

18:56Thank you very much.
18:57And we also have
18:59weekly live streams.
19:01We also do live streams
19:02on our Facebook page.
