Republican US Senator Marco Rubio promised a robust foreign policy focused on American interests at his nomination hearing on Jan 15 for secretary of state under President-elect Donald Trump who takes office on Jan 20.
A China hawk and staunch backer of Israel, the 53-year-old Rubio is expected to comfortably win confirmation by the full Senate.

00:00Thank you very much, Senator Scott.
00:02You'll be a strong secretary.
00:04How can you coexist?
00:05How can any nation state on the planet coexist?
00:10Well, thank you, Mr. Chair, and thank you, Senator Rubio.
00:13Senator Rubio, this is a long, laundry list of crises.
00:17You've earned yourself one of the hardest jobs in America,
00:20but after serving with you for so many years, I'm confident
00:24you are the right person we need to take on these threats.
00:27Thank you very much.
00:28You and I have also had a good working relationship for many years.
00:32I believe you have the skills and are well qualified to serve as Secretary of State.
00:37We welcome the Chinese Communist Party into the global order.
00:41And they took advantage of all of its benefits.
00:44And they ignored all of its obligations and responsibilities.
00:47Instead, they have repressed and lied and cheated and hacked and stolen
00:53their way into global superpower status.
00:56And they have done so at our expense and at the expense of the people of their own country.
01:02So if we don't change course, we are going to live in a world
01:05where much of what matters to us on a daily basis, from our security to our health,
01:09will be dependent on whether the Chinese allow us to have it or not.
01:12That's an unacceptable outcome.
01:14And as a result, I think we need to wrap our head around the fact
01:17that unless something dramatic changes, like
01:21an equilibrium where they conclude that the costs of intervening in Taiwan are too high,
01:26we're going to have to deal with this before the end of this decade.
01:28We are once again called to create a free world out of the chaos.
01:33And this will not be easy.
01:35And it will be impossible without a strong and a confident America that engages in the world,
01:41putting our core national interests once again, above all else.
01:46The thing that flowed from that was the indictment on the same day of Netanyahu,
01:50plus a Hamas character.
01:53I think, first of all, the whole premise of his prosecution is flawed,
01:56beyond the process of it and the precedent that it sets,
01:58which is a very dangerous precedent for the United States of America, by the way,
02:01because this is a test run.
02:02This is a trial run to see, can we go after a head of state from a nation that's not a member?
02:07If we can go after them and we can get it done with regards to Israel,
02:10they will apply that to the United States at some point.
02:13And in fact, there have been threats to do so in the past.
02:15But the premise of the prosecution itself is completely and utterly flawed.
