00:00The Welsh Government's 20mph speed limit plans was one of the most controversial decisions
00:06in Welsh political history, and received unprecedented backlash from much of the public, including
00:11a record-breaking petition that gathered well over 400,000 signatures.
00:16It angered plenty of people, caused division online, while some agreed with at least some
00:21parts, but regardless of the opinions, we've now had a full January to December calendar
00:26year with the speed limits in place, and GoSafe have revealed some statistics.
00:31It shows that over the past 12 months, more than 85,000 people have been caught speeding
00:36in 20mph areas. The numbers reached a peak in August, and slowly dropped off somewhat
00:41throughout the rest of the year.
00:43The main reason the Welsh Government put forward the 20mph speed limit was safety, and figures
00:47from the start of 2024 show that fatalities in 20 and 30mph areas are down by 23%, so
00:54despite the outcry, there are some positives to take alongside it.
