Dry for England and Wales with some bright or sunny spells developing at times due to the high-pressure system positioned over the UK, with some lingering fog patches around the south-east. However, most parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland will be mostly overcast during the afternoon. A band of cloud approaches from the west and brings some rainfall to western Scotland as the evening approaches - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 12/01/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Jonathan Vautrey.

00:00Hello there, very good afternoon to you. After being in control of our weather for the past
00:05few days, high pressure is now losing its grip across the UK. It's slowly going to be
00:10drifting off towards the south east, whereas in the north west we've got low pressure starting
00:14to bring in some frontal systems. This will allow for some patchy outbreaks of rain across
00:18western Scotland today. Some drizzle is certainly also possible for areas of Northern Ireland
00:23underneath the widely cloudy skies here. For parts of England and Wales, there will be
00:27some sunny spells around at times to enjoy, but some of us here will also see freezing
00:32fog patches lingering well into the afternoon. And if that fog does persist, it will be feeling
00:36quite cool. Temperatures will struggle much above low single figures.
00:41Something a touch milder in the west though, eight or nine degrees Celsius here. So we
00:45start to see winds coming in from a southerly direction. Those winds though really will start
00:49to strengthen across northwestern areas during this evening and overnight. Gales developing
00:55quite widely around coastal areas, locally turning severe for the Outer Hebrides into
01:00the Highlands as well as we move towards the early hours of Monday morning. Some heavier
01:04pulses of rain also arriving here closer towards dawn. It is going to be a drier and calmer
01:09night for England and Wales with some clear spells around. But underneath those clear
01:13skies, temperatures will drop off more. So some patchy frost is possible for eastern
01:17Wales, more widely down into southeastern areas of England as well. But just notice
01:21how much milder it's going to be across the far northwest of Scotland to start off Sunday
01:25morning, a 10 degree temperature difference between what we'll be experiencing in the
01:29southeast. And that is because there's winds now really coming in from a southwesterly
01:34direction. If we trace the isobars back, we can see that the source of that air is coming
01:40all the way down from the Atlantic, a very mild source being in some very mild conditions
01:46for the time of year. Whilst mild, there are quite a few isobars on the chart here, so
01:51it is going to be quite gusty for Northern Ireland and Scotland right throughout Monday.
01:57The heavy pulses of rain around at times are quite a damp, wet day. The rain will eventually
02:01push into parts of Cumbria, the far northwest of Wales around Anglesey as well. The rest
02:06of England and Wales managing to stay dry, but it is going to be noticeably cloudier
02:09on Monday compared to those sunny spells we do have around today. Still, the temperature
02:14is struggling a touch, but around five, seven degrees Celsius is closer towards average
02:19for the time of year here, but widely double figures across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:25And this north-south contrast is going to continue for a good portion of the forthcoming
02:29week. Northern areas will generally be milder, but also windier, with a greater chance of
02:34seeing some rain around at times. In the south, you will manage to stay dry, but there will
02:38be some fog lingering in places and it will also be cooler as well. Some locally frosty
02:43nights still to come as well. We'll have plenty more updates across the YouTube channel on
02:48what you can expect during the next week, so do subscribe for those, and we'll see you
02:51again here very soon. Bye bye.
