Biden calls Meta's decision to scrap fact-checking 'shameful'
US President Joe Biden on Jan. 10, 2025 describes as 'shameful' the decision by social media company Meta Platforms to scrap its US fact-checking program on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Meta on Jan. 7 scrapped its US fact-checking program and reduced curbs on discussions around contentious topics such as immigration and gender identity, bowing to criticism from conservatives as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office for a second time. The move is Meta's biggest overhaul of its approach to managing political content on its services in recent memory and comes as CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been signaling a desire to mend fences with the incoming administration. The changes will affect Facebook, Instagram and Threads, three of the world's biggest social media platforms with more than 3 billion users globally.

00:00It's just completely contrary to everything America's about.
00:04We want to tell the truth.
00:06We haven't always done it as a nation, but we want to tell the truth.
00:10And the idea that, you know, a billionaire can buy something and say, by the way, from
00:15this point on, we're not going to, we're not going to fact check anything.
00:21And you know, when you have millions of people reading, going online, reading this stuff,
00:27it is, anyway, I think it's, I think it's really shameful.
00:34The whole idea of walking away from facts checking, as well as not reporting anything
00:46having to do with discrimination regarding TPS.
00:54I find it to be just contrary to American, justice American, the way we talk about one
01:02another.
01:03Telling the truth matters.
