While starting off as a popular Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau was later seen by Canadians more critically, and they perceived him as someone who was “in it for himself,” Trudeau’s former advisor Omer Aziz says.

00:00I mean you've worked with Justin Trudeau as an advisor and I'm presuming you
00:04work closely with him and and you've got to know him well. I mean was it what is
00:08it about him? Is there something about his character or is something in his
00:11character changed that's made him go from being you know the poster boy of
00:16Canadian and perhaps even Western politics to being someone who as you
00:21described is now deeply unpopular?
00:23No I think that the very thing that made him a blessing to so many Canadians was
00:27also a curse which is that the Liberal Party was built around him. He was very
00:32charismatic, compassionate, he was a good speaker, he did very well in politics. I
00:37mean he took the Liberal Party from third place in 2015 into a majority
00:42government which hasn't happened in Canada, the UK or other Westminster style
00:47democracies as far as I'm concerned but I think over time the culture and the
00:52public sentiment changed quite quickly. He was successful in negotiating with
00:56Donald Trump in 2017-2018 with regards to NAFTA. Many Canadians at the time
01:03liked how he handled the pandemic, supporting Canadians through a very
01:06difficult time but I think people began to see him as more in it for himself or
01:12for the personal brand. They began to feel that he was not authentic and not
01:17speaking to their concerns.
