00:00Let's welcome Meggie Ochoa, one of the best Jiu-Jitsu athletes in the Philippines.
00:06Good morning, Champ Meggie Ochoa.
00:08Very blooming.
00:09Welcome to PDB Sports. How are you?
00:12Good morning.
00:13Good morning.
00:14Champ Meggie, how are you?
00:17In the past few days, you posted on your Instagram account that you're retiring from the national team.
00:25How is it so far being a retired Jiu-Jitsu player?
00:29To be honest, I don't feel it yet.
00:32Actually, officially, I sent a letter to the federation last December.
00:37So, it's only been a month.
00:39I'm still busy, but I have more time for other things.
00:46Champ, can you share with us, what was the turning point when you decided to retire?
00:55Actually, it's not just one turning point.
00:58I think all throughout 2024, a lot has happened.
01:01Number one, I started my own club, Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
01:06And then number two, I started coaching the youth national team.
01:10And when I experienced that, of course, my attention from being an athlete spread.
01:20And my performance in 2024 wasn't that good because a lot of people were targeting me.
01:28So, since then, I thought, of course, number one is, I really prayed for him.
01:36And a lot of people asked me questions that I consider as mentors.
01:42And then I thought, which of the three are you most willing to give up?
01:47Being an athlete, your club, or the youth national team?
01:51And among those three, being an athlete.
01:53Because, of course, those two are just starting.
01:56The other one, I've been there for a long time.
01:58So, there.
01:59Champ, wasn't it hard to make that decision?
02:02Because in 2024, a lot of people targeted you.
02:06And this is what you chose in your retirement as an athlete.
02:11You chose not to focus on other things.
02:16Yes, definitely.
02:17It was hard because I've been an athlete for years.
02:19You know, that's what you know how to do.
02:22You know how to do it every day.
02:24So, it wasn't an easy decision.
02:27That's why a lot of people asked me questions.
02:29Of course, I prayed.
02:30Because for me, my motivation is to bring glory to God.
02:35So, when I asked God, God, where do you want me?
02:40Where can I give glory to you?
02:42That's what I'll focus on.
02:44And He led me here.
02:46That's why He allowed me to decide that I know that this is what God wants.
02:52That's great.
02:53That's the best turning point.
02:55When you think that it's time to retire.
02:58That's your cue to stop.
03:02But your transition was great.
03:04You're still a Jiu-Jitsu athlete.
03:05You're still going to be part of our Jiu-Jitsu team.
03:09But based on your career,
03:12let's go back a little bit.
03:14The gold you won in the last Asian Games is the first gold for Jiu-Jitsu.
03:22In the Philippines, it's for A-Shard.
03:24But for you, Champ Meggie,
03:26what was the highlight of your career as a Jiu-Jitsu athlete?
03:30Well, that's one of the highlights.
03:33The Asian Games.
03:34Because in 2018, I won a bronze medal.
03:39But that year, everyone expected that Annie and I would win gold.
03:44Because in the previous year, Annie and I won gold in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
03:48But in 2018, we both got burned out.
03:52So we didn't deliver the gold.
03:54So one of my goals is to get gold in the next Asian Games.
04:01And it's not just one year of preparation.
04:04After you finish one edition, you're already thinking about the next edition.
04:08So the Asian Games is one of the highlights of my career.
04:12Also because for the Filipinos, that's what they give importance to.
04:16Even if I won a world championship,
04:18the impact of the Asian Games is different in our country.
04:22Yes.
04:23The Asian Games made you emotional after the game.
04:27Because you had a hip injury.
04:29And you felt worse.
04:31You had a flu.
04:32Tell us about your injury in the finals match of the Asian Games.
04:36Yes, that was intense.
04:37That was one of my most intense experiences.
04:40Because in the SEA Games, I got injured.
04:43My meniscus was torn.
04:45So I had a few months to recover.
04:47And when I fought, my knee was taped.
04:50That's why my hip was pulled in the semifinals match.
04:54So it was a very fresh injury.
04:55And then I had to fight in the finals match.
04:58Three days before, I had a cramp.
05:01So I still didn't feel good about the Asian Games.
05:05So it was really intense.
05:08Ultimately, I just depended on God during those times.
05:12I literally prayed and said,
05:15Lord, this is for you.
05:17And I know that you won't let me here.
05:19So while I was fighting, I was really praying.
05:21Because you know, your body can't take it anymore.
05:25But God really brought me there.
05:27That's why I know that it's Him.
05:28And it's really for Him.
05:31With all these challenges,
05:34did we expect it?
05:36Because we got injured in the Asian Games.
05:39Did we expect to get the gold?
05:43Well, it's hard to say expect.
05:46Because, of course, I will always hope to get the gold.
05:50But you really don't know what you'll get.
05:53You can only control the effort you'll give.
05:55So that's what I'm thinking.
05:56I'll just give my best.
05:59I think it was during the pandemic, right?
06:01No, it was in 2023.
06:03It was during the pandemic.
06:06It was during the transition period.
06:09Since you mentioned earlier that you're coaching our youth national team in Jiu-Jitsu.
06:16How was it coaching them?
06:18For sure, these athletes are really lucky to have a coach like you.
06:22Of course, you're the only one who has a coach.
06:24How was it being a coach so far?
06:27What advice would you give to these athletes?
06:32The experience of being a coach of the youth national team,
06:36I didn't expect it.
06:38It wasn't in my original plan to do this soon.
06:41A lot of things happened.
06:43That's why I had the chance to coach last year.
06:46And the experience was amazing.
06:49When I experienced being a coach of the youth national team,
06:51that's when I saw that this is what I want to do.
06:55They're not just the ones who will follow our footsteps.
06:59They're the ones who will go through whatever we've been through.
07:03So, it's really exciting to pour ourselves into them.
07:07To the kids, we see them excel.
07:11And we want to see them continue to excel.
07:16Eventually, I hope we can deliver Olympic gold in the Olympics of Jiu-Jitsu.
07:22In terms of teaching kids,
07:25are you a champ?
07:26When did you start?
07:27Were you a kid when you started?
07:29No.
07:30No.
07:31I started when I was old.
07:32Because I'm old now.
07:34I started after college.
07:37I was 22 or 23.
07:40We still have hope.
07:41Really?
07:42Yes.
07:44It's not too late to start.
07:46But why did we choose that?
07:49Because it was after college, right?
07:51When I joined the sport.
07:53Yes.
07:54When I was in college, I was in track and field.
07:56So, I was an athlete.
07:57But I didn't know anything about Jiu-Jitsu at all.
08:00Although, I did judo for PE.
08:01But after college, I tried to do mixed martial arts.
08:05Just as a hobby.
08:06I just did it as a hobby.
08:07And then, I tried it.
08:08I really liked it.
08:09I wanted to fight.
08:10But because I was so small,
08:12I didn't have a weight class.
08:13And it's hard to find an opponent for a small girl.
08:16So, one of the instructors told me,
08:20Why don't you just do Jiu-Jitsu?
08:22You'll have more opponents.
08:24So, I tried to do Jiu-Jitsu.
08:26And I started winning.
08:28Then, I got addicted.
08:31That's so inspiring.
08:32I was inspired because...
08:33I'll do Jiu-Jitsu right after the show.
08:35Me, too.
08:36Me, too.
08:37I'll teach you right away.
08:39This is Champ Meggie.
08:40Since now, she's coaching our youth national team.
08:43And for sure,
08:44if they have a competition,
08:45you'll be there, too.
08:46But for now,
08:47I'll just be by their side.
08:48You'll just watch them while they compete.
08:50What do you miss the most
08:52when you compete for the Philippines
08:55in Jiu-Jitsu?
08:57I miss the people the most.
08:59I miss my teammates, coaches,
09:02all of my teammates
09:04on the journey.
09:05And actually,
09:06I know that they're still there.
09:08I'm still here.
09:09But you know,
09:10it's different when you prepare together.
09:12You fight together,
09:13you celebrate together,
09:15you comfort each other
09:17when you lose.
09:18So, that's one of the things
09:20that I miss the most.
09:22And also, Champ,
09:23this martial arts,
09:25here in the Philippines,
09:27Jiu-Jitsu is not that popular yet
09:31or accessible to everyone
09:33in the city or province.
09:36What progress do we see
09:39as of now?
09:40Yes.
09:41As of now,
09:42we still don't have what we want
09:43in terms of Jiu-Jitsu.
09:44But there's a lot of progress.
09:46Like what I said in my post,
09:49in 2018,
09:50I was the only medalist
09:51in the JGIF World Championship.
09:53But in the 2024 World Championship,
09:56there were so many medalists.
09:58And then,
09:59even the youth,
10:00there were so many medalists.
10:02So, just from 2018
10:04until 2024,
10:06there's a lot of progress
10:08that the Philippines went through.
10:10And it's exciting
10:11because I know that
10:12if we just continue
10:14and maybe we'll improve
10:16how we develop the sport,
10:19then we'll reach so far.
10:22What more,
10:24if your coaches...
10:28Champ,
10:29Maggie,
10:30you mentioned that
10:31besides coaching,
10:32you'll establish your own club.
10:33Tell us about the beginnings
10:35of that club.
10:37How many people are enrolled?
10:39Do you have statistics?
10:40And what's your long-term goal
10:42for this club of Jiu-Jitsu?
10:44Yes.
10:45So, for now,
10:46our club is still small.
10:47We just started in August last year.
10:49We're in Robinson's Magnolia
10:52in Hype 24-7 Fitness.
10:54So, we're just sharing
10:57that space.
10:58So, we're just in the beginning.
10:59But I have a big vision
11:01for Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:03And it also aligns
11:05with the vision
11:06for the Youth National Team.
11:07Because what I want is
11:09whatever God allows me to learn
11:13throughout my Jiu-Jitsu journey,
11:15this is where I'll share it
11:17with Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:18And I also want
11:21the people who join here
11:23to experience the best possible
11:27that they can experience
11:28through Jiu-Jitsu.
11:29So that they can improve themselves,
11:33not just in Jiu-Jitsu,
11:34but also help
11:36outside of the mat.
11:37So, that's what I want.
11:38Whatever help I can give
11:40to the people who will join us,
11:41they can get that
11:43from Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
11:44For those who want to join,
11:47how can they join here?
11:49Is there an age bracket?
11:51Or maybe you can elaborate.
11:53Yes. Actually,
11:54it's perfect now
11:55because we have a promo.
11:56I want.
11:57Yes.
11:58You can also come.
11:59Oh, we're already here.
12:01After.
12:02Today, we have a class.
12:04But our promo is free.
12:05The training of those
12:07who haven't tried Jiu-Jitsu yet is free.
12:09Every Saturday,
12:10we have basics classes.
12:12So, it's free.
12:13It's only until January 25.
12:16So, if you want to try,
12:17you can go.
12:18For age bracket,
12:19as young as 4 years old,
12:21we have classes.
12:22Of course, the kids
12:24and the adults are separated.
12:26But there.
12:27If you're young,
12:28if you're old,
12:29you can try here
12:30at Solas Jiu-Jitsu.
12:31Just go to

12:37or message us
12:38on Instagram or Facebook.
12:39Wow.
12:40That's it for us.
12:41Champ Meggy,
12:42from a world champ,
12:44and of course,
12:45a medalist in Asian Games
12:47and in SEA Games,
12:48what do you mean
12:49to future Jiu-Jitsu players
12:51that the Philippines will represent
12:52in international competitions?
12:54Yes. So, to future Jiu-Jitsu players,
12:58it's exciting.
12:59It's very exciting
13:00to see you
13:02develop from the time
13:04that you started
13:05until the time
13:06that we'll see
13:07that you're already achieving
13:09whatever your dreams are.

13:25to enjoy what you're doing
