Yoshida Shoin was a thinker from the late Edo period in Japan and one of the spiritual leaders of the Meiji Restoration. He was from the Choshu Domain (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture), where he opened the Shoka Sonjuku school and nurtured many philosophical scholars. Shoin's ideas had a major impact on the modernization of Japan. He was imprisoned for his opposition to the shogunate and executed in 1859. Yoshida Shoin's life and ideas are frequently featured in Japanese historical documentaries, and he is regarded as a pioneer of the restoration.
