00:00In a rare occasion, a NASA spacecraft arrived at the atmosphere of the closest star in our solar system, the sun.
00:17What is the secret of this record-breaking encounter?
00:21Brother Kim, what is it?
00:23This is the day NASA or National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been waiting for.
00:31This December 26, they learned about the spacecraft Parker Solar Probe.
00:38It survived after traveling 3.8 million miles away from the surface of the biggest star in our solar system, the sun.
00:49There it is.
00:50See it?
00:51There it is.
00:53Parker Solar Probe is 3.8.
00:553.8.
00:563.8.
00:573.8 million miles from the surface of the sun.
00:59This is why it is now considered the closest encounter of mankind to a star.
01:04How far is 3.8 million miles?
01:063.8 million miles may not sound that close, but if I put the sun and the earth one meter apart, Parker Solar Probe would be four centimeters from the sun.
01:16It's the closest human-made object to a star.
01:21What is the significance of this encounter?
01:26Brother Kim, what is it?
01:29The Parker Solar Probe, named after the astrophysicist Dr. Eugene Parker, was launched in Caloocan on August 12, 2018.
01:36It aims to conduct close-up study of the sun.
01:38This area that Parker is going into is just so crucial to our understanding of the sun and its impact on the earth.
01:44That solar interaction, that space weather, those billions of tons of material that the sun can throw at us interacts with our power grids, can interact with our technology.
01:53So it's really important to understand them at their source and how they get all that energy.
01:57For the spacecraft to reach the atmosphere of the sun, it travels at a speed of 430,000 miles per hour.
02:03At this speed, you can travel from New York to Tokyo in less than a minute.
02:09And so that it doesn't burn or melt in the scorching heat of the sun, it's protected by a carbon composite shield.
02:18What else can we discover about the sun after this close encounter?
02:22That's what we'll be looking forward to in the coming days.
02:27Always remember, the important thing to know.
02:29This is Brother Kim, and I'll answer you in 24 hours.
