00:00Back into the early line here on the Sports Grid Network, I'm Dub Zanderson.
00:03That is Joe Ranieri and time to talk a little college football, the playoffs,
00:08the new look, playoff format.
00:10And Joe, before we take a deep dive into some of these quarterfinal matchups,
00:14what are your thoughts on what we have seen?
00:17Are you all for it?
00:18Is it thumbs up, thumbs down?
00:19Do we need to still make a couple of changes going forward?
00:25Yes, there has to be changes going forward here,
00:28because I have a suspicion that we are probably not going to see some competitive games again
00:35this round here, Dubs.
00:36And that's, I think the seating has got to change.
00:40You know, much like when you have March Madness, Dubs,
00:43where the four best teams in the country are usually the four number one seats, right?
00:49And then you start slotting them in from there.
00:52You know, the four best teams in the country were not given a bye.
00:56They weren't.
00:58So this whole seating system, because then what happens is then you tend to get,
01:02you know, Notre Dame's beating up a overmatched Indiana team.
01:06And then you've, you know, here we go again.
01:09We've got a Penn State team beating an SMU team that, come on,
01:14like that didn't even look like real football, what SMU was doing out there.
01:18So I think the seating system needs to change here a little bit.
01:24I still am a big proponent of just,
01:26I only think there's a handful of teams every year, Dubs, that can win a national championship.
01:31There's never going to be a Cinderella.
01:33This is a money grab.
01:35I'll still say it.
01:36I mean, kudos, Indiana, SMU.
01:38And I get it.
01:39There's been blowouts in the BCS era and all of that.
01:42I get it.
01:43But now you've just tripled the blowouts.
01:46Now we've got to watch football and watch teams that,
01:49yes, they may deserve to get there because of they played by the rules
01:53and won the games on a schedule.
01:55But that doesn't mean they're the best teams in the country.
01:58I don't think we have the 12 best teams in the country.
02:01We have the 12 most deserving, I guess, based upon the rules.
02:06But the 12 most deserving is going to give us blowout after blowout after blowout
02:11until we eventually get down to what is going to be, I think, the Final Four.
02:15Yeah, there's really different ways to, you know,
02:18measure and put weight on some of these victories and some of those losses.
02:21So certainly a couple of teams that they've got to iron out moving into the future here.
02:26But let's take a look at the quarterfinals.
02:28We'll have one matchup going on New Year's Eve.
02:30We've got three games on the slate for New Year's Day.
02:33And out here on the West Coast, Best Coast, out to the Rose Bowl,
02:36it's the Oregon Ducks, quack, quack, going against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
02:40And this one opened up as the Buckeyes projected to be the favorites.
02:45They're laying a point.
02:46They're now laying two and a half, minus 130 on the money line.
02:4911-2 for their season record.
02:52They'll have star quarterback Will Howard going against Dylan Gabriel,
02:55who I've been big on all season.
02:57But early thoughts for this look ahead, Charles.
03:00Oh, and this is kind of my point, right?
03:03How are you the number one seed in the country, the number one team in the country,
03:08and you get a bye the first week, but your game is against Ohio State?
03:13Like, come on.
03:14Like, it's just, that's unbelievable here.
03:18Ohio State should have got a bye with Oregon and others there.
03:22We should have had the four best teams being the number, the one through four seed,
03:27and let everybody else work their way up to them.
03:30But instead, here we go.
03:32We're going to get maybe what should have been a national championship game.
03:36We're going to get it here now in this round with Oregon taking on Ohio State.
03:41And listen, we saw this already.
03:43It's a neutral site, though.
03:44We saw it at Oregon.
03:46Oregon squeaked by there, but Ohio State had their chances in that game
03:50and ended up shooting themselves in the foot with Will Howard late.
03:54I think it's going to be a fantastic game.
03:56If the Ohio State shows up that we just watched against Tennessee,
04:00Ohio State wins this game.
04:02If they don't, Oregon wins this game.
04:05Either way, there's a good chance your national champion is the winner of this game.
04:09Yeah, big call there.
04:12And for the Oregon Ducks, I mean,
04:14they've been the shortest price on the board for the Nanny all season long,
04:17but now they're dogs going into this one.
04:20So still a lot of parity projected out of the top four teams
04:25at least going into the quarterfinals.
04:27And I'll tell you what, the fighting Irish.
04:29Notre Dame getting set to square off going against Georgia.
04:33We shared the news earlier on today's show for the Bulldogs.
04:36They will be missing star quarterback Carson Beck.
04:39Will not go in this one.
04:41They're still sitting there.
04:42Minus 128 over at the Fandle Sportsbook.
04:45But with that surgery, with that news coming across for Carson Beck in that LBLC,
04:50Gunnar Sogden come in for this one to get the starting duties.
04:53But he's shown plenty of promise when he has had his opportunities as well, Jar.
04:58Yeah, and like I said, they've had plenty enough time to figure it out.
05:01He's not a guy with limited experience.
05:04He's got plenty of experience here.
05:06And they're going to have their hands full against a Notre Dame team
05:11that certainly has the horses here to give Georgia a run for their money.
05:17Now, ultimately, I think this is going to be very interesting to see.
05:22Offensively, a Georgia team that has struggled to run the ball.
05:25But quite honestly, you're not going to run on this Notre Dame defense.
05:29If you're going to be Notre Dame, you got to beat them by throwing on them.
05:32It'll be interesting to see if Stockton can do that.
05:34If they can, they got a pretty good shot at winning this game.
05:37But Notre Dame is going to be a tough out for anybody,
05:41including a backup quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs.
05:45Notre Dame, Georgia projected to be a close one.
05:47So too for Ohio State in Oregon out here on the West Coast.
05:51One of the bigger lines set there, Boise State taking on Penn State.
05:56Penn State, the Nittany Lions.
05:57I feel like we used to know someone who supported this team.
06:01It really is not coming to mind.
06:02But 10 and a half.
06:03Is this going to be the easy beats of the quarterfinals, John?
06:06Yeah.
06:08I mean, listen, Penn State, much like what they did to SMU here.
06:14What's going to happen when Boise State can't run the ball with Jen?
06:18What's going to happen?
06:19What, they're going to beat Penn State secondary?
06:22Like this is, I think this has got disaster written all over it.
06:26I think this is going to be, it's 10 and a half for a reason at this point, Dubs.
06:30And I'd be shocked if that number doesn't crawl up and get a little bit higher before kickoff.
06:3510 and a half.
06:36Penn State looking to take down star running back Ashton Jeanty and the Boise State Broncos.
06:42The biggest margin, I guess the biggest discrepancy going in the quarterfinals.
06:46The Longhorns going against Arizona State, who have had a really good year.
06:5011 and 2.
06:51They've got star running back, Jim Scatterboe.
06:53He's looked sensational.
06:54But there's levels to this thing.
06:56Can the Longhorns cover the two touchdowns job?
06:59Well, listen, if I, there's no way I thought Clemson was going to drop as many points on
07:05that Texas defense as they did in Texas, no less.
07:10Maybe Arizona has a puncher's chance to keep it close, but probably not.
07:16Chick-fil-A beats gold.
07:18Playoff action.
07:24Welcome back into the early line talking all things college football.
07:28I'm Dubs Anderson.
07:28That is Joe Ranieri.
07:30We're looking ahead towards the quarterfinals getting underway.
07:33New Year's Eve.
07:35So a week from today, some of these blue chip programs vying for the biggest honor in college
07:42sports.
07:43And if we look at the odds for Joe, it tells us it's all about the Texas Longhorns.
07:47Quinn Ewers getting set to lead Texas into the promised land.
07:51They're sitting at plus 310.
07:52We've got Ohio State at plus 330.
07:56The Ducks sitting at plus 480.
07:58Taking a look at the bracket, going after the analysis that we shared prior to that
08:04commercial, Texas going against Arizona State.
08:06If they were to move on to the semifinals, they would square off against the winner of
08:10Ohio State in Oregon.
08:12I like Oregon.
08:13So it'd be Texas-Oregon in the first semifinal.
08:16Penn State going against Boise State.
08:18Boise State seem to be completely out of their weight division.
08:22They are going to be going up in grade against Penn State.
08:25I think Penn State survive, advance, move on to the semifinal.
08:29And then Notre Dame going against Georgia.
08:30That's going to be one of the closer games here out of the four-quarter finals.
08:35So in terms of the way that bracket looks to funnel going through the next couple of
08:40games, who's going to be the team to beat for you, Joe?
08:42Is the odds board absolutely spot on that it should be Texas at plus 310 as the ones
08:48to beat?
08:49Yeah, I don't think so.
08:52I think it's Ohio State and Oregon.
08:55Whoever wins this game between them this week at the Rose Bowl, that's your national champion.
09:01So a couple of different ways to approach it then, Doves, if that's the case.
09:07Who you think is going to win that game, bet it now because once they do win it,
09:11you're not going to get them at that price.
09:13I can promise you that.
09:14And I would just keep rolling it over here.
09:18Lock it in now.
09:18If you think Oregon is at nearly 5-1, lock that in.
09:23Lock them to win against Ohio State, lock them to win.
09:27And they would have the winner of what game there?
09:30The Georgia-Notre Dame game?
09:32Is that how it would work out?
09:34Yeah, Ohio State-Oregon.
09:36Winner looks to advance and take on Texas or Arizona State.
09:40Likely would be Texas there if they were to get the result of Arizona State.
09:44So that looks to be the tougher side of the board.
09:47Absolutely, it does.
09:49But if you make it through that gauntlet, you're beating whatever comes out from the other side,
09:55whether in likelihood, what, Penn State taking on, you know, the winner of-
10:04There you go.
10:05So that's that to me.
10:07Now, is there a dark horse here?
10:08Can you look like- it feels to me like Texas and Ohio State is what everyone seems to think
10:14is going to be a thing, but that's all coming from the other side.
10:17So listen, anything can happen in any given game, right?
10:20So whoever you think is going to win the other side of the bracket,
10:24that appears to be where the best odds are currently, right?
10:27So if you think Notre Dame is coming out of that side to play for a national championship,
10:32or if you think Penn State is doing it, maybe that's the side to look at here,
10:39because who is going to be a favorite in these games here right now?
10:43I mean, if Notre Dame plays Penn State, is it a pick-em game?
10:48Feels it.
10:50Yeah, yeah, it certainly would be very close there.
10:54Tougher assignment for the odds makers.
10:56And Joe, you know, for anyone who's maybe not big on the college football,
11:00or they get up to speed at this time of year,
11:03trying to see who's going to take out the national championship,
11:06it looks a little different.
11:07We had 12 teams coming in to this new look playoff format.
11:11Is it a sign of the times, you know, with NIL deals and player portals
11:15that we can expect to see different programs
11:19making a bit of a run at this thing year in, year out?
11:21Is it just going to be a carousel of players, you know, swapping and changing?
11:26Does it make it harder for a new, you know, coach or a program
11:29like a Bill Belichick coming in to North Carolina
11:31and just trying to build that consistency year over year?
11:36Listen, I don't know what...
11:38This is a hot mess, college football moving forward.
11:42They basically, you know, congratulations.
11:45The genie's out of the bottle.
11:47You've got kids that can get paid now for their name, image, and likeness.
11:52But did you just see what happened in Duke?
11:55You have a three-star high school prospect
11:58just two years ago out of California,
12:01played one year at Tulane this year,
12:05just signed for $5 million at Duke.
12:08$5 million, Dubs, $5 million.
12:11How in the world are...
12:14How do you compete with that now?
12:16So that's basically...
12:17And he's not even that good.
12:18He played at Tulane and now he's going to Duke
12:22and you're paying him $5 million.
12:24I don't know how you reel this thing back in.
12:26I really don't.
12:26It's a mess right now.
12:28Yeah, it really feels like...
12:30He's making more money than coaches.
12:32Jeez, it feels like it's getting out of hand, Joe.
12:36And I really, really wish I was better at sports.
12:38That's my big takeaway.
12:40Yeah, amen.
