00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top fan theories about Squid Game.
00:13I'm looking forward to it.
00:14If you haven't watched the show yet, consider this your spoiler alert.
00:22Bizarrely, this went unnoticed not only by most viewers, but by the players themselves.
00:29Even when their dormitory was completely emptied.
00:31You catch glimpses of drawings on the wall beforehand,
00:34but only at the end do you see that all six of the games are drawn there.
00:38This is interesting because we do see characters get murdered by the frontman
00:42for providing the players with information about the next game,
00:45despite the fact that the info is right there.
00:54However, it's not clear how much it would have helped to see the symbols,
00:58as most of the games aren't necessarily ones you can prepare for ahead of time.
01:03It wouldn't have told them which glass stepping stones are breakable, for example.
01:15In the finale, we see Gi-hun grapple with survivor's guilt over winning,
01:19particularly over the death of Sang-woo, which he tried to avoid.
01:22Eventually though, after encountering Il-nam again and learning the truth about his role in the barbarity,
01:28Gi-hun gains a new lease on life.
01:44Not only does he take Sae-byeok's brother out of the orphanage and place him with Sang-woo's
01:49grieving mother, whom he also shares his prize money with, but he dyes his hair bright red.
01:54Many have wondered what the red hair means,
01:56with some believing it's foreshadowing for a second season,
01:59and that Gi-hun will be a guard next time.
02:02Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said, the color represents Gi-hun's inner rage.
02:07The numbers of our main cast definitely won't be as random as they seem,
02:11even if the true meaning behind them isn't completely known.
02:15For example, the number of dreams and hopes given by Gi-hun,
02:19the number of times he's been able to live the life he wants,
02:22and the number of times he's been able to dream of becoming a hero.
02:25Number 7.
02:26The numbers are symbolic.
02:28The numbers of our main cast definitely won't be as random as they seem, even if the true
02:33meaning behind them isn't completely known.
02:36For example, it's no mistake that Il-nam, whom we eventually find out is the mastermind
02:41behind the games, is number one.
02:54But why is Gi-hun the last player, 456?
02:57Some believe it means that Gi-hun will bring an end to the games, but interestingly, it's
03:02also the same as the prize pool.
03:0445.6 billion won.
03:07So does this mean that whoever is number 456 is always going to come out as the winner?
03:12And was Gi-hun selected to win before he even entered the games?
03:24Number 6.
03:25The salesman is Il-nam's son.
03:31Why did they cast Gong Yoo if they weren't going to use him?
03:33He's a huge name in South Korea currently, having starred in the wildly popular zombie
03:38movie Trained to Busan, so it doesn't make sense to have him in such a minor role.
03:51It could be that they needed a very charismatic actor to play the role of the game's salesman
03:55in order to lure players in.
03:57Or it could be that the salesman is actually a much more important character.
04:09Potentially he might be the son of Il-nam, and is set to take on the mantle of running
04:13the games after Il-nam's death.
04:16Number 5.
04:17It's international.
04:18The VIPs arrive clad in gaudy animal masks to watch the players take on the glass stepping
04:24stone bridge.
04:25They provide our first insights into how the games are run, why they're run, and who bank
04:31rolls that 45 billion won prize pool.
04:34They hint that the South Korean games are not the only ones in existence, and that there
04:39are more being conducted around the world.
04:47Only time will tell whether we stay in South Korea, or perhaps see Gi-hun travel to another
04:52country to take on the games there, where they may not know who he is.
04:56After all, he was about to leave for America at the end, and most of the VIPs did seem
05:02to be from the US.
05:08Number 4.
05:09Foreshadowing.
05:10Eagle-eyed viewers eventually realized that all the major character deaths were foreshadowed
05:24earlier in the show.
05:26Like all good foreshadowing, this isn't enough to spoil what happens, but it's definitely
05:30cool to see on your second, third, or even fourth time watching the show.
05:43For instance, early on we see Sae-byeok threaten to cut a man's throat for previously ripping
05:48her off while trying to move her family across the North Korean border, and she finally dies
05:53when Sang-woo cuts her throat.
05:55Sang-woo himself almost takes his own life at the start of the show, and in the final
06:00episode follows through so Gi-hun can win the prize.
06:09Number 3.
06:10Joon-hol isn't dead.
06:22This rogue cop on the edge traveled to the island with the purpose of finding his brother,
06:27whom he believed had been killed in the games.
06:30We eventually find out that this isn't true.
06:33The front man is his brother, and they have a dramatic showdown at the end, which culminates
06:38in Joon-ho getting shot and falling from a cliff.
06:41We already saw one character die off-screen and then come back later, Il-nam, so it's
06:46easy to expect the same trick will be pulled again, and Joon-ho won't actually have died.
06:51At the very least, we hope he's still alive because he was one of the best characters.
06:56Number 2.
06:58We already mentioned the significance of Il-nam being number 1 and Gi-hun being 456, but what
07:03about when Gi-hun is given Il-nam's jacket just before they take part in the marble game?
07:20Many viewers have been wondering what the symbolism of the jacket is, drawing the conclusion
07:25that it's a sign to the game's organizers that Gi-hun is not to be harmed, or that he's
07:29about to become the winner.
07:31There are some more zany theories, however, that Gi-hun is actually Il-nam's son thanks
07:35to them both recognizing the fake neighborhood the marble game happens in.
07:42Is Il-nam passing on his jacket proof that Gi-hun is his son and heir?

08:13Card Colors
08:19We know how the players are recruited into the games, but we are none the wiser on how
08:23the guards arrive or how they're all fine with committing such awful crimes.
08:28But the answer might be hiding in plain sight.
08:30At the beginning, Gi-hun takes the blue card from the salesman and later wakes up in a
08:35cyan tracksuit as one of the players.
08:37But it might be the case that if you chose the red card, you'll be drafted in as a guard.
08:42If the guards are in just as much debt as the players, with the money to pay them off
08:46being dangled over their heads, it makes sense that they would be willing to go along with it.
