Five kilometers from Montignac-Lascaux and about 10 km from our campsite, on the road to Les Eyzies, the castle of Losse, classified as a historical monument, watches over the Vézère.

The medieval fortress, surrounded by walls and deep moats, was replaced by an elegant summer residence in 1576. Access is via the fortified Châtelet, one of the largest defensive structures of its kind in the south of France.

00:43The medieval fortress, surrounded by walls and deep ditches, was replaced by an elegant
00:48summer residence in 1576.
00:53Entry is via the fortified Châtelet, one of the largest defences of its kind in south-western

01:18As early as the 11th century, the Delos family, originally from Flanders, settled in the Vizier
01:22valley and built a fortress.
01:31At the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of a certain comfort, the castles opened to
01:34the outside and to the light.
01:36However, they did not completely disarm, because the time was still troubled by the raging
01:41religious wars.
01:42Thus, the defence system was adapted to newly introduced technologies, especially artillery.
01:50We are allowed to admire the extraordinary furniture of the apartments from the 16th

02:08At the end of the 20th century, as part of the architectural restoration, the gardens
02:12were redesigned to recreate the splendor imagined by John II Delos.
02:22A bit away from the castle, in the so-called Garden of the Princess there is a garden lounge
02:26for a really good-tasting snack and a tea room, but you also get a coffee.
