00:00PTV Sports is back!
00:14And for our sports banter, we have live via Zoom, Rhea Mae Villamin from the Philippine softball team, RP Blue Girls.
00:23Good evening, Ma'am Rhea. Welcome to PTV Sports.
00:25Good evening.
00:27Ma'am Rhea, first of all, welcome to PTV Sports.
00:30Thank you for hosting our interview this afternoon, this Saturday afternoon here at PTV Sports.
00:36Our first question is, Ma'am Rhea, since you're part of the Philippine team, tell us about your journey.
00:41How did you fall in love with softball?
00:43What was your journey to start this sport?
00:47Actually, I just fell in love with it when I was a teacher in elementary school.
00:53Then, I searched online, and I saw that this game is okay.
01:00Then, I joined the provincial team.
01:03That's when I met my coach, who helped me to get to the university.
01:09Ma'am Rhea, since you mentioned that you got into softball, what did you see in softball that made you want to do sports?
01:19And now that you're a national team member, what did you see in softball?
01:22Was the game fast?
01:23What were the qualities of softball that made you want to play this sport?
01:31We became friends.
01:35Then, I fell in love with it.
01:37I liked playing with it.
01:40I really enjoyed it.
01:43I felt that this game will help me to get a spring scholarship.
01:50Then, I'll be able to study in good universities.
01:55Rhea, when you started playing softball, did you just do it for fun, or was it really your mindset to get a scholarship?
02:10When I was in elementary school until I graduated from grade 6, I just played for fun.
02:17Then, when I was in high school, I really made it my passion.
02:27Who was the person who told you that you have a future in softball and you should pursue it?
02:41Coach Lori Bernardino.
02:44How did you talk about it, Rhea?
02:47Tell us.
02:50It was a provincial match.
02:55He told me that I have potential in this game.
03:00He asked me if I'm ready to work hard.
03:02He told me that the training is not easy.
03:07I told him that I'm ready to work hard.
03:11You said you're ready to work hard.
03:13Rhea, you're now a part of our national team.
03:17When did you start being a part of our national team in softball?
03:21How was your experience so far?
03:23Tell us, when you started in the national team, did you have a hard time?
03:28You said that you're ready to work hard.
03:30Did you have a hard time, or did you think that your transition from being an amateur to being a part of the national team was smooth sailing?
03:39I started being a part of the national team during the pandemic.
03:44When the quarantine was lifted, there was a tryout in Marikina.
03:50I was chosen.
03:52The training was okay.
03:56There were times when we really wanted to prepare ourselves for the game or tournament.
04:05That's when the training was really hard.
04:09But the training was okay.
04:11Rhea, you mentioned that you started during the pandemic.
04:14It started to spread after the pandemic.
04:19During that time, sports were still limited.
04:25Did you have a hard time training?
04:29You were required to stay away from each other during warm-ups.
04:32Did you have a hard time training during that time?
04:35Especially since it was a challenging time for sports.
04:37There were a lot of restrictions.
04:39You were not allowed to go to certain places.
04:42You had to meet certain requirements to be able to go to certain places.
04:47Was that a challenge, Rhea?
04:51At first, it was hard to adjust.
04:55But when I got used to it, I realized that I also had to take care of myself.
05:04You were not quarantined.
05:08You also have to think about your teammates.
05:11If you get sick, you might get infected.
05:14That's why you have to be extra careful.
05:16There was a time when we were required to wear face masks during training.
05:23Rhea, you said that you tried out for the Blue Girls.
05:27Fortunately for you, you were accepted.
05:29How did you know that there was an opening for the Blue Girls?
05:35How did you hear about it?
05:39It was like an invitation.
05:43I was invited.
05:44So, someone discovered you and invited you?
05:49Yes.
05:50Who discovered that you could join the Blue Girls National Team?
06:00I received a message from the coaching staff that I could try out.
06:14Were you surprised?
06:15What was your reaction?
06:16You were recruited by the National Team.
06:21Of course, I was surprised and nervous.
06:25I was excited because this is the highest career for a player to be a part of the National Team.
06:38Rhea, for the viewers of PTV Sports,
06:41since softball is similar to baseball,
06:46but if there's a difference between the two sports,
06:48what is the difference between softball and baseball?
06:51I think the only difference between softball and baseball is the ball,
06:55the distance between the base and the bat.
06:59It's the same when it comes to how to play,
07:02but the ball, the bat, and the base are far from each other.
07:09In softball, the size is normal.
07:14Is it the ball?
07:17Is the baseball ball green?
07:21No, it's white.
07:24What about softball?
07:28The color is green.
07:31Oh, it's green.
07:32I thought it was the other way around.
07:33I thought it was the other way around.
07:35What about the bat?
07:37Is it the same?
07:38Is it the same or softer?
07:40It's the same, but the baseball bat is smaller.
07:47When it comes to the techniques used,
07:51what is the main difference between these two sports, Rhea?
07:56I didn't change anything.
07:58Nothing?
07:59Just the equipment?
08:00Yes.
08:01Okay, okay.
08:02Now that you're part of the Blue Girls National Team,
08:07one of your career highlights, Rhea,
08:09is that you competed in the Asian Games,
08:12and you're about to play on the podium.
08:15Yes.
08:16When you look back on that experience,
08:18what comes to your mind?
08:20What are the highlights that come to your mind?
08:26I think what comes to my mind and heart
08:30is that we really fought for that game.
08:34As in, we really gave it our all,
08:36all the hard work,
08:38the time we put in for that tournament.
08:41That's it.
08:43We did our best,
08:46but I think we still have a long way to go.
08:52What were the adjustments you made
08:55when you played in the Asian Games?
08:58Because this is such a big stage.
09:01And you said that it was a new experience for you, right?
09:07So, what was the biggest adjustment that you went through,
09:11you, personally, and the whole team that you observed?
09:16In the game itself,
09:20of course, when it's Asian, it's really fast.
09:24You really need to double the hustle.
09:28And then, in terms of the climate,
09:32it's a bit cold,
09:35and it's hard to warm up your body.
09:38Was it hard for you?
09:42It was cold.
09:45What did you learn, Rhea?
09:47Because, of course, when you play in a big tournament like this,
09:52you get used to it,
09:54your confidence grows,
09:57your experience increases.
09:59For me, my question is,
10:01what was the biggest lesson that you learned here?
10:05The biggest lesson that I learned in every game
10:09is that it's not wrong to make mistakes.
10:14As long as, when you make a mistake,
10:16you learn something,
10:18or you adjust yourself to that mistake.
10:22Then, the game,
10:26as long as it's not over, it's not over.
10:29As long as it's not over, it's not over.
10:32Don't let yourself think that
10:36if you have a big advantage,
10:38that's what will decide.
10:40You need to fight until the end,
10:42and do your best.
10:44That's so beautiful.
10:45What Rhea said is so beautiful.
10:47Not only in sports, but also in life.
10:48Yes, it's applicable everywhere.
10:50That's what Rhea said.
10:51Now, Rhea, aside from the Asian Games,
10:53the highlight of your year for 2023 is the World Cup.
10:56How was your experience playing there?
10:58Of course, you faced the best of the best
11:01softball teams in the world.
11:03How did you feel playing against them
11:05and playing in the World Cup?
11:09In the World Cup,
11:11my first tournament was international
11:14as a national team.
11:17So, I was still nervous
11:19because I just came back from injury.
11:23Then, we were lined up.
11:26My emotions were mixed up.
11:29I was nervous and excited.
11:33Sometimes, I got blanked out.
11:37Now, Rhea, you mentioned the World Cup,
11:40the Asian Games,
11:41and you have a lot to say
11:43for the upcoming years.
11:44But so far,
11:45what was your greatest moment
11:47as a member of the RP Blue Girls?
11:52The highlight of being a part
11:55of a national team is
11:58how we treat our team as a family.
12:04Even if we don't have blood relations
12:06or we don't come from the same family.
12:09That's how we feel inside.
12:11And the games that
12:15we support each other.
12:17There's nothing left.
12:19That's beautiful.
12:21That's what's important for our Philippine team.
12:23That's what they do to win.
12:25Rhea, before we move on
12:28to the upcoming tournaments,
12:31do you have a goal
12:33as a member of the Blue Girls
12:35that you hope to achieve someday?
12:39Even if not now.
12:41But this is something
12:43that I won't stop until I get it.
12:47Do you have that?
12:49I do.
12:50What is it?
12:52Maybe in the Asian Games.
12:58That we'll come back stronger.
13:03Now that you've experienced
13:06in the Asian Games,
13:08do you believe that you
13:10and the whole team
13:12will have a better performance
13:14when you return to that stage?
13:19Maybe.
13:21Confidence.
13:23I hope so.
13:25You mentioned that you'll play
13:27for the Asian Games.
13:28The Asian Games is still a long time away.
13:30But for this coming 2025,
13:32do you have any upcoming tournaments
13:34that you'll join?
13:38In December,
13:40we have a tournament called SEA Games.
13:46This upcoming July,
13:48we also have one.
13:50You mentioned SEA Games.
13:52So far,
13:53for all the members of RP Blue Girls,
13:55our Philippine team is gold.
13:58What are your preparations
14:00to maintain in the Philippines?
14:02Technically, you'll defend the gold medal
14:04of the Philippines last SEA Games
14:06for softball.
14:07What are your plans
14:09and what will be the team's mindset
14:11for this 2025 SEA Games in Thailand?
14:16Actually, we're still on Christmas break.
14:20But we've already discussed
14:22and we're ready
14:24that when the new year comes,
14:29we'll focus on training
14:31and we'll do our best.
14:34So basically,
14:35you'll make the most of your vacation.
14:37Is that it?
14:40Rayyan,
14:41heading into the SEA Games,
14:43we know that the Philippines
14:45has 10 gold medals.
14:47Is there any pressure
14:49when you think that you need to defend
14:51the state of the Philippines
14:53as the top softball team in our region?
14:57There is.
14:59For me, there is.
15:00But I don't know about the others
15:03that I'm a teammate.
15:06Of course, that's included
15:08in every game and sport, right?
15:11But Rayyan,
15:12before we say goodbye,
15:13maybe you have a message
15:15for the fans of Blue Girls,
15:17your teammates,
15:18coaches,
15:19the people who support you.
15:23My message to those who support
15:26Blue Girls is
15:28thank you for your support.
15:30I hope you don't get tired
15:32of supporting us
15:33and watching our games.
15:35God bless and Merry Christmas.
15:37Alright.
15:38Thank you so much,
15:39Reyya May,
15:40Bilyamin.
15:41Merry Christmas.
15:42Teammates,
15:43don't BBQ
15:44because PTV Sports will be back.
