A former nurse pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court on Friday (Dec 20) to a charge of deceiving a woman by offering a baby for adoption.

Mahirah Mohamad Yusof was accused of deceiving N. Jay Letchumy Naidu into believing she was offering the baby for adoption, causing the victim to pay RM15,950 in instalments to the accused.

00:24The offence was allegedly committed in Kepong Baru,
00:27Sentul between January 20 and June 7 this year.
00:31The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code,
00:35which provides for a minimum jail term of one year and a maximum of 10 years and whipping,
00:40and a fine upon conviction.
00:43Deputy Public Prosecutor Hench Goh proposed bail of 6,000 ringgit in one surety.
00:49Lawyer Faris Ezani, representing Mahira,
00:52appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that the accused is unemployed,
00:56has four children and suffers from diabetes and anemia.
01:01Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin set bail of 6,500 ringgit in one surety
01:06and fixed February 13 for next mention.
01:09Lawyer Reenajit Kargolan held a watching brief for the victim.
