00:00Salubong sa Bagong Taon is in a good mood
00:03for those who can get a new design worth P50, P100, and P500.
00:09It's also made of polymer.
00:11You can get it from banks on December 23,
00:14but it's only limited to Greater Manila area.
00:17Watch out for Marie Zumali!
00:22This is the Visayan Leopard Cat, also known as Maral.
00:26It can be found in Negros and Panay Islands
00:29and is considered vulnerable or endangered
00:32in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species of 2008.
00:36It's a Visayan Leopard Cat
00:38in the new-looking polymer banknotes of Banco Central.
00:42It's a endangered and native species of animals and flowers,
00:47wild animals, and native hobbies in the Philippines.
00:51This is what the new polymer banknotes look like
00:54or what we'll see in circulation starting next week
00:58Aside from P1,000 for the Philippine Eagle,
01:02the Visayan Spotted Deer, Palawan Peacock Pheasant,
01:08for P100, and the Visayan Leopard Cat, for P50.
01:14The first Philippine polymer banknote series
01:17is smarter, cleaner, and stronger.
01:22Smarter because they have advanced anti-counterfeiting features
01:27and a smaller carbon footprint.
01:30Cleaner because viruses and bacteria do not survive on polymer
01:36as long as they do on paper.
01:39And stronger because they last longer than their paper counterparts.
01:44And if they do get dirty, you can easily wipe them off
01:48with a damp cloth without any damage to the banknote whatsoever.
01:52Another key advantage is security.
01:55Counterfeiting has always been a problem for economies around the world.
01:59But polymer banknotes are a notable progressive change.
02:04Their advanced security features make it more difficult to replicate.
02:08Starting December 23, new banknotes can be obtained from banks.
02:13But this is limited to the Greater Manila Area.
02:16In January, the circulation will spread across the country.
02:20According to the BSP, old paper can still be used.
02:24This can be used, but it's not allowed to sell.
02:27It's plastic, so it can be damaged.
02:30For GMA Integrated News, I'm Maris Umali.
