Torch light parade honors Nobel Peace Prize winner, Japan’s atomic bomb survivors' group

Representatives for the atomic bomb survivors group Nihon Hidankyo greeted hundreds of people who had marched in a torch light parade in Oslo, after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize earlier on Tuesday, December 10.

Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of survivors of the 1945 nuclear bombings of Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was represented by co-chair Terumi Tanaka, 92, Shigemitsu Tanaka, 84, and Toshiyuki Mimaki, 82.

The laureates greeted the parade, which was marching in their honor, by waving from the balcony of the Grand Hotel where the Nobel festivities end with a banquet.

00:00I'm going to eat it with you!
00:02So cute!
00:04I'm going to take a picture of you.
00:05No, I'm not going to.
00:07Oh, you are not?
00:10I'm going to take a picture of you!
00:15But you are going to eat it with me, right?
00:17I'm going to eat it with you.
00:19You are going to eat it with me?

02:38I am overwhelmed.
02:42I'm ecstatic.
02:44We're here to support Nahon Hidankyo.
02:46We're here to support the Hibakusha.
02:48And we're here to end nuclear weapons.
02:50And I feel so empowered.
02:52With all of these people who share this hope,
02:54who share this passion,
02:55we know we can do it.
02:57We are going to carry this torch for them.
03:09I think it was a brilliant choice of the committee this year
03:11because we get to celebrate them
03:13for all the work they've done their entire lives.
03:15It's been a truly lifelong commitment for some people
03:18and their families because we should also remember
03:20that the Hibakusha also include
03:22their children and their grandchildren.
03:24And that, if anything, underlines how terrible nuclear weapons are.
03:27It's just that this is a trauma that has lasted generations.
03:49Congratulations!
03:52Congratulations!
