Health alert: Sitting is the new smoking
Transcript
00:00Sitting is the new smoking. So you are not smoking, but you are at an equal risk of health
00:09hazard. The studies have shown that you're 60% higher risk of heart attacks, you're 60%
00:14higher risk of diabetes, you're 60% higher risk of cancers. All that has been linked
00:19just for sitting. You come to work and you're in this corporate environment, say for eight
00:24to 10 hours, and you're trying to meet your deadlines and you're trying to meet your given
00:28targets and goals. So my only concern, and my only awareness thing is that I'm trying
00:33to bring this point in the public, that let's put that after 30 minutes, what am I doing
00:40for myself? Is my shoulders correct? Am I, you know, is my back aching? Are my legs tired?
00:46So my quick tip would be that set your alarms, start standing and talking, take your time
00:52out, just do very simple basic exercises that you can do in your own workplace, move your
00:57hands up, stretch them, look at the ceiling, look at the floors, just stand up and stretch,
01:03do squats, do lunges, just move a little behind and use your table and do a push up, like
01:07you would be doing a wall push up. When your email pops up, why don't you stand up? To
01:11every email, you can just sit and do your calf raises, you can just generally do a bit
01:16of squats. My elbow is hurting, let me just, let me just do a few biceps curls, or let
01:21me just stand up and let me just stretch it. If you have to have a meeting with somebody,
01:25why don't you have a standing meeting? Let's reduce the chairs in the conference rooms.
01:30Let's take turns while standing up. Exercises have always proven to secrete happy hormones
01:37in your body. And it has also proven that you're not exercising your body, but you're
01:42exercising your brain. Keep a check on your water intake, not only yours, but your colleague.
01:48Make a partner because always a partner helps to track your challenges. You cannot change
01:53the stress, just you can change the way you look at it.
