Aston Villa 3 Brentford 1 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Villa Park where it finished. Villa 3, Brentford 1, the hosts back to winning ways after an 8 game run which has seen them fall back into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
00:15And now after one win, 190 minutes, they're sitting 7th and everything's looking pretty positive again with the game against Southampton to come on Saturday.
00:27Unai Emery said in his programme notes it would only be a matter of time before Villa were back on track and this really did feel a case of that happening.
00:35They were much improved and Morgan Rodgers setting them on their way, sporting a new bleached blonde haircut, curling a shot into the top corner from just outside the box on 21 minutes.
00:47Olly Watkins adding to the advantage from the spot 7 minutes later and 6 minutes after that, Matty Cash making it 3-0.
00:55Brentford did pull one back in the second half through Mikael Damsgaard but in truth the comeback never really looked on.
01:01It was Mark Flecken, the Brentford goalkeeper, who was vying for the Man of the Match prize despite conceding three goals.
01:09This really would have been a 5-6-1 drubbing without Flecken. He pulled off one fantastic save from Olly Watkins, saved from Watkins again later on and then twice denied John Duran after he'd come off the bench.
01:22Villa, once that goal had gone in from Rodgers, that was the first time they'd been in front in any match for more than a month and you could see the confidence start to flow back.
01:31They were much more solid in defence, Tyrone Ming making his first start in the Premier League since August last year when he suffered a serious knee injury.
01:41It was like he'd never been away. I'm bearing in mind it's only a month since he had that nightmare in Bruges when he picked up a goal kick and conceded a penalty.
01:51He had to wait for his first Premier League outing but he's certainly done more than enough to keep his place, providing he's in a state where he can play two games in 72 hours.
02:04Villa just looked much more solid. Ming's won countless headers, made a number of key tackles and it was a really impressive performance on a night where there were several from the Villa team who just looked rejuvenated.
