00:00The government has received donations totaling 35.8 million ringgit from 23 private companies
00:08and corporate bodies to assist flood victims across the country.
00:13This came after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called on the private sector
00:18to lend a helping hand to the people affected by the northeast monsoon floods, either through
00:23financial contributions or by sending aid machinery to the flood-hit areas.
00:28The beauty about Malaysia is that we need to harness continuously because that will
00:36ensure not only stability but also the future of this great country.
00:42So I'm really extremely pleased, without any real campaign to get funds voluntarily
00:52because I know people are doing it on their own, but I thought I should take this initiative
00:56to convey a clear message to Malaysians, including those victims, that we care.
01:01And not only we, means not only the government or civil servants or civil society, but businessmen
01:09and corporate leaders, part and parcel of this nation, who cares.
01:15It is unfortunate that the victims are mainly in the rural, the poorer segments of our society.
01:23Therefore any additional support would be most meaningful to them.
01:27Anwar said all the donations will be coordinated by the Implementation Coordination Unit of
01:34the Prime Minister's Department, which will list the infrastructure needs.
01:38He added the donations would also be used to repair school buildings and toilets, as
01:43many schools have been used as temporary relief centres.
01:47The Premier also emphasised the importance of better coordination between the government
01:52and NGOs to ensure that aid reaches those in need, and that existing resources are used effectively.
