00:00And now, on with the show!
00:31Once, a very long time ago, in a forest, there was a tree, which is a very nice thing to have in a forest.
00:36Now, in this tree, there happened to live a funny little man in a green suit with a pointed cap.
00:40He didn't live there alone, for he had a son, who was also a funny little man in a green suit with a pointed cap.
00:46Then, one day, the son came to his father with a question that he had been wondering about for fifty years.
00:51How come we got to live in a tree?
00:53Because we're not ordinary folks, boy.
00:55How so?
00:56We're magic.
00:57Magic?
00:58Yep.
00:59How so?
01:00Well, you know how sometimes folks get into trouble, and then they meet a funny little man who makes a deal to help them out,
01:05and he does a little magic, and then later on, they write a fairy tale about it?
01:08Yeah.
01:09Funny little men, that's us.
01:11And being that it was his son's 600th birthday, the little man went on to say...
01:16And now, sonny boy, it's time for you to go out into the world and make a name for yourself.
01:21If I do real good, will they write a fairy tale about me?
01:24Without a doubt.
01:26The son was very excited about this prospect, and bidding his father farewell, he skipped happily out of the forest and set out to make a name for himself.
01:34In the village nearby, there was a miller who was very poor, but as luck would have it, he had a very beautiful daughter.
01:40Now, it so happened that one day, the miller had occasion to speak to the king.
01:45I got a daughter who can spin gold out of straw.
01:48Spin gold out of straw?
01:50Yep.
01:51Spin gold out of straw.
02:22Thereupon, he carefully locked the door, and she remained alone.
02:26I don't want to be or else...
02:29No!
02:31She began to softly weep.
02:33Now, the funny little man in the green suit with the pointed cap had heard about the young girl's plight,
02:37and he knew that this was the chance that he had been waiting for, so into the room he hopped.
02:42How do you do?
02:43Who are you?
02:44I'm a funny little man in a green suit.
02:46You could say that again.
02:47I'm a funny little man.
02:48Never mind. What do you want?
02:50I want to spin that straw to gold for you if you will give me your first child after you become queen.
02:54My first child? Why that?
02:56Who knows? Makes the plot better.
02:58It was agreed, and the little man jumped to the wheel and in no time at all had spun a room full of gold.
03:04When in the morning, the king found everything as he had wished.
03:08Wow! I'm rich!
03:10They were married, and the miller's daughter became queen.
03:14About two years afterwards, a beautiful child was born, and the little man appeared once again.
03:19Why? I came for the kid.
03:20But you can't have my child. What will you do with him?
03:23Dress him in a green suit, make a funny little old man out of him, what else?
03:27No!
03:28No, no, I tell you what, I'll make a deal.
03:30If you can discover what my name is within two days, you can keep the child.
03:34Boy, won't this make a keen fairy tale someday?
03:37With that, the queen called to mind all of the names that she could think of.
03:41Henry, Clyde, Newton, George, Marmaduke, Sidney, Frank.
03:45Nah.
03:46Then on the next day, she desperately tried once more.
03:49Ming Toy, Running Mouse, Cherry Nose, Charlie Brown.
03:53No, you have failed.
03:56Well, what is your name then?
03:58It's...
04:01Then a horrible realization came to the little man.
04:04He didn't know what his name was.
04:06Wait here, I'll be right back.
04:07He dashed into the kingdom to see if he could find anybody who could tell him what his name was.
04:11Do you know me?
04:12No, I can't say I do.
04:14And with any luck, I never will.
04:16He asked everyone he chanced to meet, but nobody could tell him who he was.
04:20Finally, out of desperation, he went to an old wise man who lived in a hole in the ground.
04:25No, I don't know your name, but I know how you can find out.
04:29Tell me quick.
04:30Get yourself a mailbox.
04:32Sooner or later, somebody will send you a letter.
04:35Then all you have to do is see what name is on the envelope.
04:38That was it. He was truly a wise man.
04:41Oh, I don't know.
04:42If I had any brains, I wouldn't be living in a hole in the ground.
04:46Now, would I?
04:48The little man did as he was instructed, and before long, he did receive a letter.
04:53He eagerly looked at the envelope, but when he saw what his name was, he was shocked.
04:58Rumpelstiltskin?
05:00What kind of a name is that?
05:02I can't go back to the queen and tell her that my name is Rumpelstiltskin.
05:07I'd be the laughingstock of the kingdom.
05:10And so, the queen and her child lived happily ever after,
05:13for she never saw the funny little man in the green suit again.
05:16In fact, nobody ever saw the little man again,
05:18because he was so ashamed that he changed his name to Louis Smith.
05:23And we all know that there's never been a fairy tale about Louis Smith.
05:27That is, until just now.
05:39There's more fun to come after these messages.
