00:00Every month of November, we celebrate National Environmental Awareness Month
00:05to make sure that we are aware of the importance of taking care of our environment.
00:10And now, we are going to discuss the profound impact of health and safety
00:14and how it affects our daily lives.
00:17We will be joined by the Technical Officer of the World Health Organization Philippines,
00:22Engineer Bonny Magtibay.
00:24Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine, Philippines.
00:27Good morning, sir.
00:29Good morning to all of our viewers of your popular program, Rise and Shine.
00:35Yes, sir.
00:38Sir, what is the purpose of National Environmental Awareness Month and why is it important to our country?
00:47National Environmental Awareness Month is based on the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008
00:54or Public Act 9512.
00:57This act gave the mandate to various government agencies
01:02to promote environmental awareness
01:04such as DEPEDS, TED, TESDA, DNR, DOST, DSWD, and other agencies that can help.
01:11Environmental awareness is important.
01:13We call it environmental awareness
01:16so that we can understand the duties of these parts of the environment in our lives
01:21and we will know what we can do to take care of the environment
01:25so that it will not be pervasive in our daily lives.
01:28Environmental awareness month will also provide an opportunity for us to avoid the pollution of the environment.
01:35Let's mention some examples.
01:37For example, air.
01:39We cannot live without it.
01:41Water and food from nature are also like that.
01:45In fact, what I mentioned is true that it is a part of our bodies.
01:50If we throw those away from our daily activities,
01:54the pollutants will enter our bodies
01:57and become a source of diseases, feelings, or deaths.
02:01Maybe every month of November, there will be an event about environmental awareness.
02:06In our daily activities, we should see these events.
02:11We should always practice environmental protection
02:15so that our daily activities will be normal.
02:18Alright.
02:19From your point of view, Engineer,
02:21how does nature and the environment affect the well-being of Filipinos?
02:25And what are the main issues that we are facing right now?
02:29Especially now that innovation and technology are fast.
02:33So, what are the issues that we are facing?
02:36Okay.
02:37Like what I said earlier,
02:39microbes and chemicals can enter our bodies.
02:43What else goes into the air, land, and water?
02:47In 2016, the WHO stated that
02:50the number one cause of premature deaths due to environmental factors is stroke.
02:56Stroke risk factors are not only food and tobacco.
03:01We also call it PM 2.5 or particulate matter.
03:05The size of that small pollutant is 2.5 microns.
03:09It is so small that it enters our nose,
03:13lungs,
03:15heart,
03:16and brain.
03:17Because of the travel of that pollutant,
03:20it can enter the roots
03:22and cause stroke.
03:24Where does that PM 2.5 come from?
03:27It can come from cars,
03:30factories,
03:33and industries.
03:34Even when we cook at home,
03:36especially when we use wood or wool,
03:39when we cook barbecue,
03:41it is also dangerous.
03:42That is why we should pay attention to the origins of that PM 2.5.
03:47We should find a way to eliminate it
03:50so that we won't get sick from the cold wind
03:53that causes death.
03:56The next thing we should pay attention to is number 6
03:58on our list of top 10 cause of deaths
04:01due to environmental factors,
04:03which are diarrheal diseases.
04:05This is caused by bacteria or viruses
04:08that spread around us.
04:10If we don't have toilets,
04:13and we don't have a system in the trash,
04:15the bacteria will spread
04:17because of their presence,
04:19and they will go to the drinking water or food.
04:22To avoid this,
04:24every house should have its own toilet.
04:26And our drinking water or food
04:29should be clean and safe.
04:31The trash should be in the right place
04:33and there should be a regular collection
04:35and it should be properly disposed of.
04:37These are the good things we should do.
04:39Your engineer, Joshua, is right.
04:41There are studies that I read
04:43that there are contaminated plastics
04:45in people's blood vessels.
04:47Those are microplastics
04:50that can be seen
04:53through a strong microscope.
04:57This is dangerous to the health of people.
04:59What are the concrete steps
05:02or projects that are being done
05:05by the World Health Organization Philippines
05:07to improve the health of the people?
05:12The goal of the World Health Organization,
05:15especially here in the Philippines,
05:17is to provide technical support
05:19or technical assistance
05:21to health agencies,
05:23especially the Department of Health
05:25and other government agencies.
05:27Because of this,
05:29we helped the Department of Health
05:31and the Ministry of Health
05:33regarding the Environmental Health Program.
05:35We have already done many things
05:37such as the creation of planning tools,
05:39the National Environmental Health Action Plan,
05:41the Climate Change and Health Roadmap,
05:43and the Water and Sanitation
05:45for Healthcare Facilities Roadmap.
05:47We also helped
05:49to make policies
05:51or guidelines
05:53for water and sanitation safety planning
05:55and for water supply providers,
05:57such as
05:59Water and Sanitation for Healthcare Facilities.
06:01We are also revising
06:03the Sanitation Code of the Philippines.
06:05It has been passed since 1975.
06:07I hope the Senate and Congress
06:09will approve it soon
06:11so that we can update
06:13the sanitation rate in our country.
06:15We also help when there is an emergency.
06:17We also have a wash assistant.
06:19Also, the most important thing
06:21is the National Standards
06:23for Drinking Water.
06:25The World Health Organization helps
06:27so that we can update it
06:29so that the pollutants in the environment
06:31can be cleaned without drinking.
06:33There are also other things,
06:35such as the Water and Sanitation
06:37for Healthcare Facilities
06:39and the greening of hospitals
06:41so that the storm
06:43won't be easily destroyed
06:45and if it rains,
06:47they can do something about it.
06:49Our Department of Health
06:51has guidelines that were helped by WHO.
06:53We also helped
06:55some healthcare facilities
06:57to have solar energy
06:59so that if someone is pregnant,
07:01they can have electricity
07:03and use flashlights.
07:05But now that they have solar energy,
07:07they can provide
07:09health services
07:11continuously without any
07:13disruption.
07:15We have helped
07:17a lot of our countrymen.
07:19What you are doing is very good,
07:21especially you, Audrey.
07:23We are really going through a storm.
07:25The World Health Organization
07:27is helping
07:29Water Sanitation Facilities.
07:31That's good.
07:33Engineer, please send a message
07:35to the public,
07:37National Environmental Awareness Month.
07:39Yes.
07:41A lot of pollutants
07:43are affected by our pollution.
07:45That pollution can come
07:47from garbage,
07:49car smoke, and toilet flushing.
07:51Climate change is
07:53a result of pollution
07:55such as a strong storm,
07:57extreme heat, or heavy rains and floods.
07:59What can we do
08:01as citizens?
08:03Let's clean the garbage.
08:05Let's avoid using
08:07single-use plastics.
08:09It pollutes and goes to
08:11rivers and seas that can
08:13pollute the fish that live there.
08:15If we can't avoid
08:17using plastics,
08:19let's learn how to
08:21reuse it.
08:23Let's recycle it
08:25so that it won't spread
08:27around us.
08:29If garbage is polluted,
08:31let's practice composting
08:33such as dry leaves,
08:35food waste. Let's use
08:37composting technology.
08:39I also want to promote
08:41community gardening.
08:43We used to have a green revolution.
08:45Let's bring it back
08:47so that the compost
08:49that I mentioned earlier
08:51can be used for vegetables,
08:53trees,
08:55medicinal plants,
08:57and other plants that we can use.
08:59That will happen
09:01if we manage
09:03our garbage.
09:05What should we do about
09:07polluted air?
09:09Let's reduce the use of
09:11gasoline and diesel.
09:13Almost 70% of the
09:15air pollution is caused by
09:17our environment.
09:19We can use e-trikes
09:21and electronic vehicles
09:23so that there will be
09:25no pollution from cars.
09:27We can also do carpooling.
09:29Others are practicing it.
09:31Or we can use bicycles
09:33so that there will be no pollution.
09:35Let's plant a lot of trees
09:37and plants that can absorb
09:39carbon emissions and other
09:41air pollutants.
09:43Let's support the
09:45DOH and
09:47local government units
09:49so that there will be
09:51zero-authentication.
09:53Every house should have a toilet.
09:55The government,
09:57NGOs, and civic groups
09:59can help with this.
10:01Let's do these things
10:03and help our environment
10:05so that it won't be polluted.
10:07As I mentioned earlier,
10:09the environment is
10:11a part of our body.
10:13We should remember that
10:15pollution is a part of our body.
10:17Pollution is also
10:19a part of our health.
10:21We should protect
10:23the environment
10:25to avoid diseases
10:27that lead to death.
