At least 12 people have been killed due to flooding and landslides in the eastern and central parts of Sri Lanka after heavy rains drenched the country over the past three days, a top disaster official said on Thursday (Nov 28).

00:26The remaining fatalities occurred in separate incidents involving landslides and people
00:30being washed away by rising waters.
00:33Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology reported that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal
00:38is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and make landfall on the island's east coast
00:44by Thursday.
00:45However, the department forecasts that the storm's impact will begin to ease by Saturday.
