Kerala’s Wayanad Landslide: Top Disaster Official Unveils the Cause of the Crisis| Watch

Dr. Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, Member Secretary of Kerala State Disaster Management, provided insight into the catastrophic landslide in Wayanad. He explained that the disaster was caused by a unique hydrological phenomenon where "1 river became 2 rivers." This splitting of the waterway likely led to increased erosion and instability in the surrounding terrain. The unusual water flow pattern overwhelmed the landscape's natural capacity to absorb and channel water, ultimately triggering the deadly landslide that devastated the region.

00:00The landslide in itself originated about six kilometers away in the forest, in a pristine non-inhabited area.
00:12And the material moved down a river and came and piled up in an area where it was never anticipated to come and pile up.
00:23So there was a turn that the river took and the river itself has widened and it has become two rivers.
00:30Teams of NDRF, two teams of defense service, defense security cops, one navy river crossing team.
00:38Then we have also requested for MEG, Engineering Task Force Assistance from Army.
00:45So they are moving in from Bangalore. Primary team has reached Mangalore and they will reach Wayanad.
00:51They will do a reconnaissance and then they will requisition the services of ETF with the Bailey Bridges.
01:00For moving all these troops, we also have aircraft ready at Hind and two aircrafts are flying in in Trivandrum.
01:07And Army from Bangalore is also sending two columns with boats to Calicut as an advance measure.
01:15So that if you need to replenish human resource, then that is also available.
01:20What about the repeated landslides that have happened in Kozhikode?
01:50up in an area where it was never anticipated to come and pile up. So there was a turn that the
01:54river took and the river itself has widened and it has become two rivers now. So two streams are
02:00flowing in that area as of now. So that is where the situation is. This is quite an unprecedented
02:05situation in terms of the event. The event started in a high hazard zone and there in and around that
02:12area three colonies were evacuated yesterday itself. But this came and landed in a completely
02:19inconspicuous opposite hill on the opposite shore of the river far away. So that is what has
02:25happened. So what is challenging in these situations? The weather is a difficult situation
02:31there. There is a lot of slush and mud. So crossing over has become a difficult part.
02:36There was one major bridge there. The bridge got kind of disconnected. India RFS with great
02:43difficulty tied up ropes and is trying to move in people to the other side so that rescuers can go
02:48there and fetch people out. That is where we are.
