Patriots LB Jahlani Tavai joins! Are the players taking these losses seriously? What was the mood in the locker room and flight back after the loss in Miami?
Transcript
00:00Hi, Jelani.
00:01Good morning.
00:02Happy Thanksgiving.
00:03Happy Thanksgiving to you.
00:04How are you doing?
00:05I'm good.
00:06I'm enjoying some family time right now, so it's pretty awesome.
00:07All right.
00:08Have you forgiven us for last week?
00:09I feel like Wiggy enraged you last week.
00:10Nah, we're all good.
00:11We're all good?
00:12It's all new week.
00:13All right.
00:14New week.
00:15Yeah.
00:16New week.
00:17Fresh start.
00:18We were just talking about football-related films.
00:19I would ask you to start what you think the best one is all time.
00:34Okay.
00:35I would say either Remember the Titans or Any Given Sunday.
00:46Both great.
00:47Yeah, both really good.
00:49It's tough to pick against Denzel Washington.
00:51It really is.
00:52But Any Given Sunday was good.
00:53Yeah.
00:54Al Pacino was-
00:55See, Al Pacino just, in general, he's a good actor, but he overdoes it.
00:59He's the same person in every single role, and it bothers me sometimes.
01:04Fun fact.
01:05When I was playing for the Jets, Pacino used to come to practice and watch Bill Parcells.
01:10He did?
01:11Yep.
01:12Really?
01:13Mm-hmm.
01:14You ever talk to him?
01:15No, no, no, no, no.
01:16Does he help get inspiration with the role?
01:19Well, Jelani, I want to get into some stuff here as you guys get ready for the Colts.
01:26Certainly an interesting back-and-forth.
01:28We had it with Gerard Mayo on this show on Monday about his comments post-game.
01:34David Andrews, we're going to hear from him later, yesterday stood up and said that, essentially,
01:40Bill used to say the same kind of thing that Gerard Mayo said.
01:43I just wanted to ask you, when you heard Gerard Mayo say that, basically, when these guys
01:50get out between the white lines, there's really nothing I can do to help them, is that kind
01:57of how you feel as a player?
02:00When it comes to penalties, or dare I bring up tackling, or this or that, that's really
02:05on you guys and not on your coaches?
02:09I truly didn't hear that first conference, so I didn't know about it.
02:14But, I mean, I don't feel any type of way.
02:18I mean, he's not wrong about his comments.
02:20It's not the coaches' plan, you know, their job is to prepare us and it's for us to be
02:27out there and, you know, make plays.
02:32So, yeah, but it is what it is.
02:37We're on to Indy, like, that's Miami conversation and we've been having a great approach for
02:46this week's practice starting yesterday and, yeah, so, yeah, I had no idea about that,
02:52so, I mean, but it doesn't really upset me or anything.
02:56Jelani, we had talked about, you know, the Miami, some of the in-game adjustments, Tyree,
03:03excuse me, Jalen Waddell's having a big game and so, you know, coaches on some of the halftime
03:08adjustments, do they allow the players the ability, especially the ones that kind of
03:14know the game, to give input throughout the game to maybe say, hey, we should go to this
03:20specific blitz or just change some of the things that might be happening on the field
03:25from a defensive standpoint?
03:26Tyree?
03:28Oh, yeah, we definitely talk as a unit on the side during games because, I mean, that's
03:34part of the game.
03:35It's not just you going out there and running a certain call, you know, we have to make
03:42sideline adjustments and I think that we made great halftime adjustments, it was just, you
03:49know, a little too little, a little too late, you know, so, yeah, but we're on to the next
03:56week.
03:57We got to coach this week, they got a strong quarterback and some wide receiver threats
04:04that we got to make sure we take care of this week and I think, like I said, we've been
04:08having a strong approach to Indy.
04:12Jelani, there's been a lot of discussion this week after reports came out after the Miami
04:16loss that inside the locker room, some guys were fooling around, laughing, smiling.
04:23As a leader in that locker room, do you feel like guys are taking these losses seriously
04:29and to heart and if not, what do you do to get everybody on the same page?
04:35No, everybody, trust me, everybody's taking it to heart.
04:42I mean, if you guys were on our plane ride back home, you would know how quiet it was
04:47but you can't just dwell and sit and, you know, and soak.
04:55You know, that's not going to be any fun if you're just in the locker room and it's quiet,
05:00everybody's upset, so, you know, our motto is always to change the page every time we
05:06come in on Wednesdays.
05:09So, it's good to see that the guys are energized and ready for the next week.
05:14Yeah, we're still pretty upset about what's going on.
05:18Jelani, I'm just curious as a guy that played for him and now the pervasive nature of Bill
05:22Belichick on TV and podcasts and everywhere, have you consumed any of Bill as an analyst
05:27and what do you think of it?
05:32I mean, it's interesting.
05:34I really don't watch a lot of TV like during the season because of how much we have to
05:39prepare for the games.
05:41But some of the segments that I've seen, I mean, he does a really good job.
05:47Do you think that this team would be in a better place today if he was still the head
05:51coach?
05:55You know, that's a team question.
05:57That's not a question for me, but I'm enjoying myself with Mayo and it is what it is.
06:06I got nothing but love for both Mayo and Bill.
06:10So, like I said, I'm loving my time here and we're going to figure it out.
06:16Jelani, one of the things that we always talk about week in and week out which a major,
06:21you know, to help teams win football games is the ability to get after the quarterback.
06:26You guys are playing against a good quarterback in the fact and Anthony Richardson who can
06:30run the football.
06:31How do you make sure you're disciplined but you're still able to put pressure on him and
06:37not allow him to get outside the pocket and make major plays with his legs?
06:44Our D-line got to eat, you know.
06:47Our D-line's got to get after the quarterback and not just get after him but rush a specific
06:52way.
06:53That way he doesn't, like you just said, get out the pocket.
06:57So, whether it's, you know, I'm not going to give away our game plan so Andy can hear
07:03this, but I think our D-line will do a great job on making sure that he stays in the pocket.
07:12Jelani, Jabril Pepper's back at practice yesterday.
07:14What does he bring to this team in a time of need?
07:19It brings energy, new juice and, you know, everybody knows how he plays so we're just
07:25excited to have him back on the field.
07:28All right, Jelani.
07:29Any spam on the table tomorrow in any form, a part of any of the dishes?
07:37Oh, I don't know yet.
07:39Yeah, we're deciding right now as we drive into the facility.
07:45Okay.
07:46I mean, your daughter's first Thanksgiving, maybe a little bit of the Gerber squash in
07:50a jar or something like that for her, I'm guessing.
07:53Greg has that now.
07:57No, not yet.
07:59Just mama's milk.
08:00Okay.
08:01All right.
08:01Well, enjoy it.
08:03It goes fast.
08:04That's the oldest man thing ever said, but it's true.
08:07So, enjoy it and a great week of getting ready for it and we appreciate you joining us as
08:17you do every week this morning.
08:18All right.
08:18Happy Thanksgiving.
08:20Appreciate you guys.
08:21Happy Thanksgiving, guys.
08:22All right.
08:22There you have it.
08:23Jelani Tavai and everything seems to have blown over.
08:27I think we're friends again.
08:28Yeah, we're good.
