Sweeping changes to the way aged care is funded and regulated have passed parliament. It includes a cut in waiting times, more in-home care packages and increasing the means tested payment caps. Aged Care Minister Anika Wells says the laws address complex problems for older Australians.

00:00We'll have a whole new system that's designed to keep people at home for as long as possible,
00:07which is what people have been asking the federal government to try and do for many,
00:11many years now.
00:12It's also designed to give people better services, faster services, more services, and better
00:18recognise the complex needs that people need to stay at home.
00:23When you have a fall, we're putting in place measures that you'll get more allied health
00:27and rehabilitative support to try and get you back home and to stay at home rather than
00:31being forced to go into residential aged care.
00:33We're introducing palliative care so that people who want to die at home will now have
00:38the ability to do that under support at home.
00:40And we're increasing the value of home packages so that you can now get a home care package
00:45up to the value of $78,000, all designed to try and keep you at home for as long as possible.
