00:00A proposed Welsh Government scheme which would have required farmers to use a set amount
00:06of their land for planting trees in order to qualify for farming subsidies has been
00:10altered after massive backlash earlier on this year.
00:15The protests were separate from the ones recently seen over inheritance tax affecting farmers
00:19and it seems the Welsh Government wanted to make amends with farmers where possible.
00:26Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies said at the Royal Welsh Winter Show that
00:30changes needed to be made and the Welsh Government needed to listen to farmers about the plans.
00:36The new plans aren't finalised yet but instead of it creating a specific amount of tree coverage
00:41there are now more voluntary numbers which would reward farmers who wanted to go above
00:45and beyond as part of the scheme.
00:49Some in the agricultural community have welcomed the changes and said that maintaining a set
00:52amount of tree coverage is beneficial for farmers to diversify their yields and business
00:57interests.
