00:00More than probably any other year in recent memory, 2021 is going to be a year of two
00:04halves, and nowhere is that post-pandemic divide more clear than in WWE, with July being
00:09the month where they fling open their doors and welcome the unwashed masses back to professional
00:14wrestling.
00:15With the first six months of the year in the books, in the pocket, out of sight, love you
00:18OSW, let's have a look back at the 10 best matches from the final pandemic months of
00:22the Big Dub.
00:23And hey, we give out about WWE a lot, often with good reason, but this list was hard,
00:27with stacks of honourable mentions like both rumbles, everything Kushida is doing in NXT
00:34right now, Ripley Asuka flair, Adam Cole vs Kyle O'Reilly was brutal if a teeny bit
00:39too long, the Fatal 5 way from In Your House, the Smackdown Chamber match, there are so
00:43many savage omissions from this list and I look forward to hearing your emotional reactions
00:48to each and every one of them.
00:49I'm Adam Hailing from partsFUNknown and these are the 10 best WWE matches of 2021
00:55so far.
00:56Let us know your favourite WWE matches of the year in the comments, I'll reply to
00:59the most top voted comment, and for the love of god make sure you hit that subscribe button
01:02and turn your notifications on so you never miss a PFK list.
01:05Finally stick around at the end for a word from Surfshark, our sponsors for this week's
01:09episode.
01:1010.
01:11Drew McIntyre vs Sheamus Raw, March 1st
01:13WWE sure enjoyed hiding match of the year candidates on free TV this year didn't they,
01:17with this being the first of two former friends club the f*** out of each other on a fairly
01:21random ass episode of weekly telly in a match that was somehow better than the corresponding
01:25PPV matches.
01:26Catchy category I know, I'm a writer.
01:28On March 1st a Celtic Hogbeast went to War Bastard in a match drenched in history, whiskey
01:33and sweat.
01:34Honestly though this match had no right to go as hard as it did, with the closing 5 minutes
01:37being nothing but hoss move after hoss move after hoss move, most of them from the top
01:41rope cos why not I guess, as soft southerners cheering on Ireland and Scotland destroying
01:46each other hoping that they never have the idea of getting together and revenging themselves
01:49on the English.
01:50Their no holds barred match at Fastlane three weeks later was also very good indeed, but
01:54all the weapon spots in the world couldn't match up to this match's intensity, also
01:58that closing Brogue Kick Claymore spot, chef Glasgow kiss.
02:029.
02:03MSK vs Grizzled Young Veterans vs Legado Del Fantasma, NXT Takeover Stand and Deliver
02:08And now for some very beautiful dancing.
02:11After Undisputed Era finally fractured like a Westlife commemorative plate, there were
02:14slight doom clouds on the horizon for NXT's tag team division.
02:18Thank the lord then for the adrenaline injection of MSK, two supernaturally charming and acrobatic
02:22showmen whose feud with the forever underrated Grizzled Young Veterans held the division
02:26together in a time of trouble.
02:28At Stand and Deliver night one, one of the strongest overall nights of wrestling in a
02:31very long time by the way, the vacant tag straps were up for grabs in a three way, MSK
02:35vs GYV vs LDF, and it's amazing what genuine unpredictability can do for a match.
02:41Would WWE go all in on MSK after they won the Dusty Classic, would the veterans take
02:45it to redeem their loss in that tournament, would Legado steal it so they could do the
02:49faction holds all the gold moment?
02:51All three options worked, which gave the match an undeniable electricity, even before it
02:55came a stupefying acrobatic casserole of mayhem and hurled flesh.
02:59A hugely entertaining statement on NXT tag team wrestling, even before the Brothers of
03:04Dadstruction champion Thatcher got involved.
03:068.
03:07Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens Last Man Standing Smackdown July 2nd
03:11Part two in the former friends club the f*** out of each other on a fairly random ass episode
03:15of Weekly Telly in a match that was somehow better than the corresponding pay-per-view
03:18matches category, Electric Boogaloo.
03:21Call it recency bias, but hot dog this match ruled, one of the sassiest and incongruously
03:25violent affairs to not be featured on pay-per-view in a long time.
03:28Look at Sami Zayn's back after the match, that pain must be castronomical.
03:33Everything you could want from a KO Zayn Last Man Standing match is here, KO building a
03:36tower of weaponry which of course guaranteed that his hamster ass would be the one to plummet
03:41through it, a match narrative told through amazing facials, and of course callbacks to
03:45their long and cruel history together with that final trilogy of powerbombs harkening
03:49as far back as 2015.
03:51It's so hilariously WWE that these two men would legit shorten each other's careers
03:56fighting over a spot in a Money in the Bank ladder match only for the very next segment
04:00to feature Selena Vega being just announced as also qualifying for a spot, but even loopy
04:04Vince Logic can't take away from this knucklefest of glorious violence, quite literally, fight
04:09forever.
04:107.
04:11Finn Balor vs Pete Dunne NXT Takeover Vengeance Day
04:14Has there been a wrestling glow up in recent memory greater than Finn Balor's return
04:18to NXT?
04:19Going from an empty eyed smiler on the main roster reminiscent of your brother's high
04:22friend who's always somehow in your kitchen, to a rock and roller psychopath with history's
04:27biggest and meanest penis.
04:29Throw him in with one of wrestling's best current technicians in Pete Dunne and baby,
04:33you got a stew going.
04:34Short of maybe Kyle O'Reilly, there's no one out here stretching people better than
04:38Pete Dunne, and for the most part this is a clinic of psychologically taught, focused
04:43ultra-convincing joint manipulation and counter-wrestling, broken up by brief flashes of stiff and sinister
04:49violence.
04:50Dunne catching Balor's coup de grace into a triangle choke is a thing of beauty, likewise
04:54the glorious false finish of Dunne crotching Balor with his own arm leading to a bitter
04:58end.
04:59While the first half may be a little too technical for some, the closing 5 minutes are classic
05:03Takeover main event, big, desperate moves, albeit still held together with Dunne's
05:07fixation on breaking fingers, a connoisseur's choice.
05:106.
05:11Ashley vs. Braun Strowman vs. Drew McIntyre โ€“ WrestleMania Backlash
05:16Sometimes though, more is more and this is a giant, filthy cheeseburger of a match.
05:21Three titans doing horrible things to each other in a match that skips the beginning
05:24and goes straight to Armageddon.
05:26Some people say that Vince still hasn't slept since this match, it's all his fantasies
05:30come true, just an endless carnival of thudding meat and a litany of things happening that
05:34should not be able to happen.
05:36Braun Strowman should not be able to hit a somersault plancha off the ring apron to
05:40the outside.
05:41Drew McIntyre should not be able to hit a Mishinoku driver to Braun Strowman.
05:45Braun shouldn't be able to catch a claymore into a powerbomb through the announce table.
05:48It is so much, all the time, and all of it very dangerous looking indeed.
05:52Silly wrestling.
05:53Silly, silly, stupid wrestling.
05:55Braun, you are missed.
05:575.
05:58Roman Reigns vs. Cesaro โ€“ WrestleMania Backlash Spoiler alert, you're going to see a bit
06:02of Roman Reigns in the top 5, because you know he's kind of the best thing in all
06:05of wrestling not called Adam Page.
06:07I will acknowledge Roman as the head of this particular table, because his run has been
06:11booked to pretty much perfection from Summerslam, and a lot of that has to do with the choice
06:15of Roman's opponents.
06:16Every month Roman's out here with the best indie stars of the generation and keeping
06:20up.
06:21Kevin Owens, a certain GOAT that we'll get to, and of course Cesaro, who hasn't felt
06:25this important since 2014 and Jesus Christ it's about time.
06:29At WrestleMania Backlash, which zombies aside was a glorious PPV turns out, The Big Dog
06:33and The Big Tony went 30 minutes, and yes, this is what we've been asking for.
06:38We were right to want this all along.
06:39Some gorgeously fluid wrestling, paired with the well-established, story-driven moments
06:44we've come to expect from Roman Reigns matches, be it always great value Paul Heyman at ringside,
06:48the long-term Uso storyline, or simply the Tribal Chief's poise and disdain for his
06:53opponent, even when that opponent is able to snatch him with an uppercut at a moment's
06:56notice.
06:57Could have done without the distracting vampire teeth, Big Chez, but that's my only quibble.
07:014.
07:02Bryan vs. Edge vs. Roman Reigns WrestleMania 37
07:06Once this match starts, it never stops, calling to mind one of the greatest triple threats
07:10of all time, Seth Rollins vs. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar.
07:13From the ringside goons getting involved before getting demolished, to the uneasy alliances
07:18to take care of the bigger threat, man that double submission spot devolving into duelling
07:22headbutts.
07:23Such a punch-the-air moment of silly wrestling humour and desperate ingenuity.
07:26Like the NXT Tag Triple Threat we mentioned earlier, it's another match hugely benefited
07:30by seeds of unpredictable doubt.
07:32Edge was a nostalgic favourite, Roman was the unstoppable champion, Bryan was the fly
07:37in the ointment, the pain in the ass, and those three stories wove themselves together
07:41seamlessly, with everyone looking like a superstar right up until the finish which crowned Roman
07:46as the superstar who eats superstars for f***ing breakfast.
07:49To be specific, a pancake breakfast.
07:52Stacks on stacks.
07:533.
07:54Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks WrestleMania 37
07:57Sometimes it's not about the moves, it's about the occasion.
07:59It's about the right people having the right match on the right night.
08:02The twin main events of WrestleMania 37 ruled, and while the Triple Threat had the violence,
08:07this had the emotion.
08:08The culmination of WWE thankfully deciding to conclusively pull the trigger on Bianca
08:13Belair after numerous false starts, a move totally vindicated by the This Is Awesome
08:17chant before the match even began.
08:19The bout itself was stellar, Bianca's a superstar, and honestly there are fewer, more
08:23reliable big match wrestlers in the industry than Sasha Banks.
08:27While most people will just remember the hair whip spot, in isolation one of the best
08:30spots of the year.
08:31Sound like a f***ing gunshot, there's so much good stuff here.
08:34Bianca gorilla pressing Sasha and walking up the ring steps with her like a terrifying
08:39monster.
08:40Bianca suplex deadlifting her three times in the same spot.
08:43Sasha wrapping Bianca up in her own hair.
08:45It is grand stuff, suitable for the grandest stage of them all.
08:492.
08:50Walter vs. Tommaso Ciampa NXT TakeOver Stand and Deliver
08:53Only Walter could convincingly end a match with a knife edge chop.
08:56Here's one of the single greatest attractions going right now, and please WWE, do not f***
09:01up Walter.
09:02Remember Survivor Series 2019?
09:04Do not f*** up Walter again.
09:06This match is eye-watering and I love it so.
09:09For a while, Tommaso Ciampa's brand of Rasputin-flavoured ultra-violence has lain dormant in NXT, occasionally
09:15bubbling to the surface to create magic.
09:17His matches with Thatcher were wonderful, his match with Walter is another level.
09:22including the hilarious spot of Walter chopping through the announce table, him nearly decapitating
09:28Ciampa in the best big boot since the late Great Test, Ciampa somehow hitting a fairytale
09:33ending on the world's largest and most threatening baby, it all just feels real.
09:37Every last horrible scrap of it, the selling, the strikes, the sounds, the welts, the finish,
09:43a wonderful exhibition and an increasing legacy of pain for both competitors.
09:47This was a dream matchup.
09:501.
09:51Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan, Smackdown, April 30th.
09:55Match of the year so far was on bloody Smackdown, lad, I can't believe it either.
09:59Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns, with Bryan being banished from Smackdown if he loses,
10:04doesn't really get much more blockbuster than that, and this lived up to it.
10:07And hell, what a match to debut a new theme as Roman ascends to final boss status.
10:13It's WWE's version of Sephiroth's theme and I am so here for it.
10:17Anyway, the match, the match is f***ing brilliant.
10:19Daniel Bryan wrestles like it's his last match, turbocharged with speed, intensity
10:23and raw facial emotion.
10:25Him and Reigns are a perfect blend of speed and power, Roman hitting him with huge moves
10:29like a top rope powerbomb and Bryan being able to strike little and often at Roman's
10:33arms whilst using his own speed against him.
10:35Joyous stuff, even without the huge and legitimate stake, which WWE, rare for them, actually
10:40followed through on, delivering a definitive finish, clean no less, and a result that increases
10:46in significance for every subsequent week that Daniel Bryan remains missing in action.
10:50The only downside was that this match didn't happen in front of fans, and honestly, I can't
10:55wait for wrestling to be wrestling again.
11:40Thanks again to Surfshark, that's our list, again what were your favourite matches of
