00:00If being dealt a deadly hand wasn't bad enough, now he's got slot machines with sidearms!
00:06Here's your Christmas spot on the Diamond Select Toys, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington, and Oogie's Lair PVC diorama statue.
00:14🎵
00:34Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, had grown tired of his yearly routine when he discovered a doorway to another world called Christmas Town.
00:43Fascinated with the trappings of this new holiday, Jack tries to take over Christmas duties from Santa Claus.
00:48But he is clueless about joy and merriment, as the others scare happy citizens of Halloween Town.
00:54Now, with Christmas in danger of not coming at all, Jack must undo the damage he has wrought.
00:59This PVC diorama of Jack Skellington is based on his appearance in Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
01:04It is constructed of high-grade vinyl and exacting paint details.
01:08It was designed by Joe Allard and sculpted by Dave Cortez.
01:12Sure, yeah, you could spin the wheel, but what deal can you really make with a character like Oogie Boogie?
01:16He's all really about gambling, and I think this time the odds are against Jack.
01:20Just before, of course, we get a closer look at The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington, and Oogie's Lair, let's grab as well the tape measure and see how tall the statue stands.
01:28Speaking as well of the statue, I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select that provided this sample we could have a look at.
01:33Jack, on top of the skull slot machine, is going to stand at about twelve and a half inches in height.
01:39That translates to a statue that's about 32 centimeters in height.
01:43If you're following along in the film, this is the end where Jack's trying to save Santa Claus.
01:47Though the only clause in saving Saint Nick is that Jack first has to get through a giant roulette wheel gauntlet made of many different deadly traps.
01:54It starts first with playing cards all wielding big bladed knives.
01:58Then when he gets through those, he has to contend with these skull slot machines all wanting to shoot at him.
02:03Now the actual statue depicts only just really one of them.
02:07Although when we see it in the film, there's several of these that come up to play and all want to start shooting at Jack.
02:12The one thing though I will say about this is while I think they've nicely recreated the skull slots, I think the coloring is a little off.
02:19It could also be just the way it's lit in Oogie's Lair, but these actually come across in the movie like they're more of a sandy, dustier beige.
02:26Though instead, Diamond has chose to paint these in green.
02:29Perhaps maybe adding a little but necessary color to this because of course if this was all beige and browns, it would kind of keep to a more muddier look.
02:36This also brings a little bit more festive colors to the palette as well.
02:39The skulls look just as creepy as they do in the film.
02:42I love the way they've colored and made these eyes glowing with a little bit of bright red.
02:46The hats, the lower part of the base as well, all have little panels and bolts so it looks like they're made of metal.
02:52Even like the buzzsaw blade shoulder pads look like they're sharp.
02:55Don't worry, they're not going to be bringing blood to you.
02:57I love the way that also you can see that two of the Diamonds have already been discovered with the last one about to drop.
03:03I don't think that really Diamonds is the thing that decides whether this thing wants to shoot at Jack or not.
03:07This could be hearts, this could be space, this could be anything.
03:09It could even just be bullets and that would probably be the telltale sign that these things would want to start shooting at him.
03:14But all in all, it's a nice looking base other than perhaps maybe the coloring not being 100% movie accurate.
03:19If we spin around to the back, you can see there's just as much detail as they afforded to the front.
03:24I like also the way they've sculpted this, so there's little indentations, little imperfections to this.
03:29A nice little added touch is that they also add little bullets all around the belts there as well.
03:34It's a nicely bright, it's a colorful looking base, although it just again doesn't really look like it's the colors from the film.
03:40The base actually, or I should say the bottom of the slot machine, does also have as well like a brown base.
03:46I think when we see these come into the frame, the slot machines right around here, so I don't think it has to match any of the colors there.
03:52These kind of would only be on the background area and there probably would be like four or five of these Jack has to basically cascade across.
03:59He hops on one, then he hops on another, like he's basically hopping across alligators in a swamp.
04:03Now only really one of the pistols is the thing that's holding Jack in place.
04:07It's actually really quite a feat, a single foot perhaps.
04:10The way that they've actually attached this, it's secure enough because I was like looking at this and thinking,
04:15like Jack is a pretty limber, like lean character, would that be enough to kind of hold him in place?
04:21And sure enough it is.
04:22It probably also helps as well that Jack's a pretty light character that very little plastic has to go into making him,
04:27so he's not gonna be super overly top-heavy anyways.
04:30As for Jack itself, Jack looks fantastic though.
04:34I don't think there's any question at all that when it comes to Diamond Select, when it comes to their figures, when it comes to their statues,
04:40anything when you have Nightmare Before Christmas and Diamond Select paired together,
04:44you know you're gonna be getting a really cool looking collectible.
04:47This Jack's skeleton, being a little bit small in size, definitely has a really good likeness for his face.
04:53Now despite for the fact that he's in toil, like he's gonna be in a perilous plunge trying to go across all these things
04:59before a big giant buzzsaw blade comes down, despite that he actually looks like he's generally quite happy.
05:04Maybe a different expression may have worked better I think for a character, especially this type of statue.
05:09Jack should seem really worried and yet he doesn't.
05:12The color that they've done for the face looks really good.
05:14Now I would imagine that probably what they've done as well is they've casted this maybe in all black plastic.
05:19Maybe that would have been the easier route to go in and panel line the white as opposed to doing it in black.
05:24Or they could have very well cast the whole thing in white plastic and then just painted the black on top of that.
05:30He's got of course his bat bow tie here, all done here in softer plastic.
05:34Being of course this is also PVC plastic, this would be, and I would say this really across the board with all Diamond Select,
05:39like Night Before Christmas stuff would be a very hard thing to pull off, especially a Jack, to do in resin.
05:44Because right away I would be worried that something like a leg like this, sticking far out like this,
05:49you'd never be able to do this with resin.
05:51You could do it with PVC plastic and even then you'd probably be asking yourself,
05:54why are you doing this? Just leave that alone, stop it.
05:57You can see as well his arms are extended out, individual tiny little fingers nicely painted there.
06:02Do you see the separate sections of the fingers? Those are nicely done.
06:06It's a nice molded figure. The only thing I would say as well, Jack looks really good.
06:10The thing about it though is the slot machine isn't really quite the same color as it should really be in the film.
06:15Now the other thing as well is when you're looking at the statue,
06:18if you want to have the slot machine facing forward,
06:21then really the only part of Jack you're really going to be able to see is just the side of him.
06:25If you want to see of course the front of Jack,
06:28then you're really never going to get the full treatment of seeing how much work and sculpt went into sculpting those slot machines.
06:33I think you kind of have to really meet in the middle.
06:36If you turn it ever so slightly to the side, then you still get the full effect of what Jack looks like.
06:41You also get a little bit of the skull slot there too.
06:44Again, I don't think it's a statue that necessarily works as well looking at it like this,
06:47because then you lose a little bit of pizzazz and charm that goes along with the sculpt of Jack.
06:51No, I think in a case like this, the statue really should be...
06:54Again, personal opinion, a personal opinion.
06:56I think it probably should work a little bit better being a little more on an angle.
06:59Then you get the best of the both worlds.
07:01You can see really again how much work and talent the talented artists behind the scenes at Diamond Select put into a piece like this.
07:07Again, when it comes to really Diamond Select and what they've done so far with Nightmare Before Christmas,
07:11again, when you're looking at the figures,
07:13when you're looking at even like the Minimates and Vinimates,
07:16and now even again like the statues,
07:18I've never really been disappointed at all.
07:20Jack is a hard one to really pull off anyways.
07:23There's no way this would be able to be pulled off with resin.
07:26PVC plastic, first of all, would be the best way to go.
07:29It keeps obviously the cost down for the collectors that want to get a statue like this in their collection,
07:33but also it would mean that it's a much more durable piece.
07:36Things like this, especially like legs extended out like this,
07:39there's no way you'd be able to pull that off with resin.
07:41PVC, you certainly can, and a nice statue we get from Diamond Select here.
07:46As our thoughts turn to Ho Ho Ho,
07:48and the stress of Christmas shopping season sits on our shoulders,
07:51of course, some of us have already started our Christmas shopping,
07:54and even for the select fewer, have already finished for the year.
07:57I say, oh, come on.
07:59You have to wait like everybody else to the very last minute.
08:02Nothing brings more joy to the minds of many
08:04than being able to stand in long lines in the mall,
08:06and waiting for the last minute when that someone in our special lives
08:10tell us exactly what they want for Christmas.
08:12If perhaps you're a fan of the film,
08:14or there's a fan in the family that loves The Nightmare Before Christmas,
08:17and wants to get a Jack Skellington statue underneath the tree,
08:20or in their stocking,
08:22first of all, there's no way this would ever fit in your stocking.
08:24Have you seen the size of this box?
08:26If it does fit in your stocking, I would say right away, my friend,
08:29you abuse the idea of stuffing a stocking.
08:32A stocking should be small enough to accommodate an orange,
08:34a few other things that you're eventually just going to throw out anyways.
08:37It should not accommodate a statue.
08:40One thing, though, I did want to do,
08:42obviously in preparation of all this shopping disaster that's upon us,
08:47obviously, I did want to get out some early Christmas spots,
08:49perhaps giving you guys some ideas.
08:51One good thing, though, is if you guys want to get your hands on
08:53the Jack Skellington in Oogie's Lair,
08:55he's available right now, either in comic book stores or online.
08:58Checking around, as I always like to do,
09:00I don't have a naughty and nice book,
09:02but what I can do is I have the access to the internet.
09:04I looked online, and Jack Skellington is selling for $60,
09:08about $59.99, so it's a fairly affordable figure,
09:11or a fairly affordable statue,
09:13being, of course, comprised of PVC.
09:15As said in this review, there's no way
09:17this could ever have been pulled off with resin,
09:19because that one leg that's floating above the hat there
09:22of the cowboy skull slot machine,
09:24there's no way that would be able to stand on its own.
09:26It would be broken right away.
09:28PVC pulls it off so much easier.
09:30It doesn't necessarily mean that it loses the details at all.
09:33It gains just as much as it would have in resin,
09:35but you get a much more affordable statue as a result.
09:38From head to toe, or from head to the bottom
09:40of the roulette or slot machine,
09:42it's pretty accurate to the way it looks in the film.
09:44The only obvious thing I would say is that the skull slot
09:47isn't quite the right color as it would be in the movie.
09:49In the movie, it comes across more like a dusty brown,
09:52like a dusty beige.
09:54Here, they decided to do it in green,
09:56perhaps maybe just adding a little bit of pop of color.
09:58I don't think it necessarily loses it by being the wrong color,
10:01because, again, if you're going to be using the beige,
10:03I don't think it would work necessarily as well.
10:05The green definitely shows a little bit better on the shelf,
10:08and that might have been one of the other reasons
10:10why Diamond chose this color over the screen-used color instead.
10:14Big thank you, once again, to the folks over at Diamond Select.
10:16Yes, yes, they did provide this sample
10:18of the Jack Skellington and Oogie's lair
10:20that we have a look at in this review.
10:22Not that I want to be asking you guys,
10:24not that I want to be putting you guys front and center,
10:26who has already started and finished your Christmas shopping?
10:28Let me know down below in the comments section.
10:30Everybody else, please, don't throw the turnips at them,
10:33whatever you do.
10:34But, yeah, let me know down below in the comments section
10:36how far along are you in your holiday shopping?
10:38I haven't even started yet,
10:40but I hope to be making some progress in the next couple of days.
10:42If, in the meantime, you guys did enjoy this video,
10:44do a solid throw it a like.
10:46You guys want to stick around for more, so I hope so.
10:48This is only, by the way, just the beginning of our Christmas spots.
10:50There's going to be a whole bunch of them,
10:52not only in November, I'm starting things early,
10:54but all throughout December as well,
10:56leading up to the big day when the big man in red
10:58comes down your chimney,
11:00or in your window, or anywhere else.
11:02I don't think he's like Shocker,
11:04where he can travel through electrical outlets.
11:06If he could, I mean, that's Christmas magic for you.
11:08But, of course, there's going to be a whole ton
11:10of Christmas spots coming your way,
11:12so making sure you're coming back with your festive peepers peeled.
11:14As always, thanks for watching.
11:16See you guys next time.
