Denmark digitizes documents to reflect history
From fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen’s letters to King Christian IV's school books, Denmark is digitizing its most important documents from over the centuries. The Danish National Archives is in the process of digitalizing all documents in its archives considered to be of exceptional national importance in order to future-proof them and make them available online. Among those are letters from author Hans Christian Andersen – author of 'The Ugly Duckling' and 'The Little Mermaid,' long-reigning King Christian IV's school books from the 1580s and court documents from the 17th century witch trials.

00:00I'm going to go to the bathroom, and I'm going to go to the bathroom.
00:31Hans Christian Andersen, the famous Danish poet, is mostly known for his fairy tales.
00:37However, he did a lot of writing, and he made a lot of letters, especially to his benefactors, when writing and when traveling.
00:44And these letters here are from a trip to Italy.
00:49If I had to compare them to anything contemporary, it would be Instagram posts.
00:53He's very much writing about what he's doing, what he's eating, who he is with, his ills and aches, and his mood changes rapidly all the time.
01:23And speaking Danish from an early age.
01:35And as any other schoolboy, he gets bored sometimes, and many places in the book you will see pictures of soldiers, warships, soldiers fighting, which he has written in the book also.
01:52This is a project that has been underway in quite some time.
01:56It has been a primary wish for us to digitize the documents that we think reflect the Danish cultural heritage, our common memory, in the best way possible.
02:06And we have identified 5,900 boxes of our immense collections that we think reflect this in the best possible way.
02:14So if we want to understand where we come from, if we want to understand what constitutes what it is to be Danish or to have this country, Denmark,
02:25well then we think this is very much where you need to go and read and understand to get to that point.
