00:00We put her in the backyard and let the dogs out and they gave her her space immediately.
00:06Dogs can sense things. I think that they saw right away she needs to be handled gently.
00:18Rue was left with all of her litter mates in a crate in a backyard for however many days in the middle of a heat wave.
00:28Rue has, gosh, the most beautiful eyes I think I've ever seen in my life.
00:32They call out to you. It's like, please help. I need you.
00:40We went and picked her up and her and one of her siblings were brought out.
00:45It's like everyone just kind of gasps. How is it possible that something could be in this state?
00:51Her first week she didn't really have any strength. Felt like we were hurting her just to touch her.
01:02She had so many firsts with us. Everything is so new for her, so I'm sure for her very overwhelming.
01:10This is for you. But like even through all that she's been through, it's nice to see that she's taking the world on with a curiosity instead of a fear.
01:21Can you sit? Good girl.
01:26Darwin gives off this aura that's just, hey, it's a safe place here. If I can be this calm and relaxed, so can you.
01:36She just bonded to him and that's where you would always just see her go to find nap time.
01:44And he just was such a good boy.
01:50After that first week, it was a huge turnaround. She started doing everything on her own.
02:02Rue discovered her reflection. She's thinking like, oh, my gosh, let's play. But she just can't quite get to herself, obviously.
02:11She started discovering her voice.
02:19So she throws these little temper tantrums constantly.
02:24She also just started doing things that a curious puppy would do.
02:34Excuse me.
02:38A turning point was she graduated from only wanting to cuddle with Darwin to wanting to cuddle with the other dogs as well.
02:47What are you doing, Rue?
02:54We couldn't necessarily ignore it.
03:01The smiles that we would start to see, the belly up in bed, the smiling while you're sleeping.
03:07I'm like, I think there's like a little human in there. It's like you're actually outwardly showing happiness.
03:16What?
03:18Megan might roll her eyes after I say this, but I'm typically the more rational one.
03:22Right away, I'm like, don't get too attached.
03:26When we were in bed, Megan looks at me. She says, can you sign this? I said, sign what?
03:31She said, co-sign Rue's adoption contract.
03:35OK, who are we kidding? Like, she's not leaving.
03:39Don't need to waste any more time. Rue is home. Let's just make it official.
03:44We have this crew of misfits of a pack.
03:49We needed to make sure that we would not stop fostering.
03:54And we know that she could be another helpful dog in teaching any foster that comes in that it's a safe place here.
04:04For her, this was it.
04:07We were her people and our dogs were her dogs.
04:13Good girl.
