The favourite festive smells have been revealed – with roast turkey, cinnamon and pine trees coming out on top.

A delicate waft of hot mince pies, Christmas scented candles and warmed Christmas pudding also featured highly in the study of 2,000 adults who celebrate the festive season.

Whilst the smell of gingerbread, mulled wine, piping hot pigs in blankets and chocolate complete the top 10 list.

The research found two thirds (66 per cent) of those who enjoy the season get excited as soon as they smell some of the more familiar aromas, which also include spiced apples, roasted chestnuts and oranges.

Yankee Candle, which commissioned the study, is launching a nationwide tour of its immersive Yankee Candle Express, which will invite people to test these sensory claims in real life.

Fragrance expert Taylor Perlis, who works for the scented candle company, said: “Smell can transport us in an instant, evoking nostalgic memories that are tied to special moments in our lives, whilst also creating new moments that turn into memories.”
