Malaysia has joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative led by Brazil's G20 presidency, aimed at speeding up the eradication of hunger and poverty while championing Sustainable Development Goals.

The G20 summit opened in Rio de Janeiro on Monday (Nov 18) with the launch of the alliance.

00:00The G20 summit in Brazil kicked off on Monday with the launch of a global alliance to combat
00:11poverty and hunger that 82 countries are backing.
00:15The alliance is also backed by the African Union and European Union, international organizations,
00:21development banks and philanthropies including the Rockefeller Foundation and Bill and Melinda
00:26Gates Foundation.
00:28It is up to those who are back at this table, the inescapable task of ending this
00:35blade that shames humanity.
00:38For this reason, we set as the central objective of the Brazilian president at the G20, the
00:44launch of a global alliance against hunger and poverty.
00:48This will be our greatest legacy.
00:52The alliance is born in the G20, but its destiny is global.

01:03Malaysia, which was invited to the summit by Brazil, also joined the alliance.
01:08Prime Minister Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim said by joining the alliance, Malaysia is reinforcing

01:23Other world leaders also voiced their backing for the alliance.

02:22I am proud to announce the United States is pledging $4 billion over the next three years
02:28to the World Bank's International Development Association.
02:31In addition, I am proud of my country's work in this fund, including mobilizing $60 billion
02:36through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment.
02:40The truth is that we have been in this power in the new era of sustainable development
02:46to go from billions to trillions in assistance to those in most need.
02:52During a photo opportunity session of leaders of G20 members and countries backing the alliance,
02:58Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney
03:03arrived late and missed the session.
03:06The three leaders were in a trilateral meeting before the start of the summit.
