00:00No, I swear, it was the backwards record that convinced me to buy it.
00:04Here's a look at the brand new Synapse film, the Trick or Treat 1986 4K release.
00:16Well, I guess it hasn't yet been released.
00:18All I really done was cut the tape on the top of the box, and I thought to myself,
00:21oh, wait a minute, what are you doing here? I could actually do a video of this,
00:24promoting the idea that the classic 80s film of Trick or Treat is now being released
00:28in 4K format from the folks over at Synapse Films.
00:31Loved the original Trick or Treat from 1986, starring, of course, the rock killer Sammy Kerr.
00:37Well, Synapse Films finally did do a 4K release of it.
00:39Although, unfortunately, the day that they dropped the title, their site had crashed.
00:44I was actually going back and forth on their site, looking at it in the morning, it was down.
00:48Then in the afternoon, it was up for like five minutes.
00:51And when I was trying to check out, then the site went down again.
00:54It so happened, though, I just happened to be at a stoplight.
00:57I looked on the site, I know the car had stopped.
01:00And then when I realized the site was going, I quickly pulled into a parking lot,
01:04and I placed my order there.
01:06Safe driving all the time by this guy here.
01:09Anyways, though, I have finally gotten the box in the mail,
01:12and I'm going to open this up the same way that you guys are going to be able to have the chance
01:16to experience this for yourself.
01:18At one point, though, the only way that I was really watching the original Trick or Treat film
01:22was through the Ragmen German release, which worked fine.
01:26I mean, other than just the fact it was all in German language, at least the menu was.
01:30The movie for itself played fine.
01:32You can see even on the back of this as well, like it's all in German writing,
01:36but not that that necessarily affects the film at all.
01:39A classic film starring not only Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne, and Mark Price,
01:43who played Skippy in Family Ties.
01:46Yeah, this for a while was my go-to.
01:48I don't think it actually had reverse.
01:50Did it have reverse cover art? Maybe it did.
01:53I'm looking at it. No. No, it's still German.
01:56It didn't matter whether it was German, whether you flipped it around or not.
01:59Anyways, this was the go-to that I was using for a while watching Ragmen.
02:02Ragmen is sort of, for me, like one of those horror movies that I don't consider as classic
02:08as maybe the ones that people remember, like, of course, your Halloweens, your Trick or Treat,
02:12starring, of course, Sam.
02:13But it's always more of a beloved classic for me.
02:15It's very much like Christmas Evil.
02:17It's always the movie I sort of start the holiday watching.
02:20For Halloween, it's always Ragmen or Trick or Treat.
02:23And then for Christmas, it's always generally Christmas Evil
02:28before it's Silent Night, Deadly Night, and all those other horror titles.
02:31Anyways, this was pretty much my go-to for a while
02:34until finally Synapse had dropped the announcement
02:37that they were going to be releasing a 4K format of the classic Trick or Treat movie.
02:41Now, there were three ways of getting this movie, or three different covers.
02:45I initially chose this cover.
02:47And then I went for a while, kind of thinking to myself,
02:49did I regret maybe picking this cover over one that I also liked as well?
02:53Of course, I was so quick to go on the site.
02:55I'm like, okay, I got to check this out quickly
02:57just to make sure that I wasn't going to lose out the chance to get this.
03:00So I ended up going, I believe, with cover A.
03:02I'm just going to pull this out from the bubble wrap so you guys can see.
03:06Sammy Kerr is on a rock and roll nightmare, Trick or Treat.
03:09So this was cover A. There was cover B and then cover C.
03:12I'm sure you guys could easily look this up online
03:14to see what those other alternate covers were.
03:16This was very expensive too.
03:18Just going from a Canadian collector and telling you guys,
03:21I think it was like $66 over on their site.
03:25And then when they added, of course, the shipping on top of it, it was $26.
03:29I think when it was all in, it was $92.66.
03:32Now, you're thinking already, hey, $92, $93, that's pretty steep, a humble collector.
03:37And it is until you realize that's U.S. dollars.
03:41I think when I was all in, finally, it was probably well into $130
03:45before I finally paid this thing off.
03:47So $130 for a 4K release of Trick or Treat, a little on the more steeper side.
03:52But again, I'm glad I finally got this.
03:54This is a limited cover, a limited release.
03:56I'm going to very carefully grab my knife here, McCutcheon's.
03:59And I want to just carefully cut the plastic here
04:01because the last thing I really want to do is damage the case.
04:04Now, if you guys have been lucky enough to grab this,
04:06also let me know down below in the comments section which cover you went with.
04:10It was either, again, a toss-up between this one, I think, was it cover C?
04:14I hope they kind of have the other alternate artwork in here as well.
04:17Of course, you've got your J-card here on the back.
04:19The only thing about J-cards, though, is that they always tell you exactly
04:22everything you would need to know about what's inside the movie.
04:25But then there's, you know, it's always something you have to slide off.
04:28Now, some people choose to have their J-cards displayed with their movies.
04:31Just because I end up putting it on the shelf like this,
04:33half the time I usually just dispose the J-cards altogether.
04:37Of the things, of course, available on the back here.
04:39What are you afraid of? It's only rock and roll.
04:41Rock and roll will never die.
04:43In this 1980 cult film that stars Mark Price of Family Ties,
04:47I think he was also in...
04:49Was he also in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?
04:52Maybe he wasn't.
04:53As Eddie Weinberg, a teenage outcast who idolizes Sammy Kerr,
04:57played by Tony Fields, a heavy metal superstar.
05:00After Sammy dies in a violent death,
05:02his spirit returns to help Eddie get even with his high school tormentors.
05:06In doing so, Sammy begins to gain control over Eddie's life
05:09and brings him deeper into the world of the occult.
05:12When Eddie realizes that he's become the tool of Sammy's vengeance,
05:15he attempts to stop him,
05:17and the horrifying events that follow leave no one unscathed.
05:20Featuring special features, special appearances
05:23by Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne,
05:25Trick or Treat marked the directorial debut

07:43I'm glad that something is in there by Gene Simmons.
07:46In the spotlight, a tribute to Tony Fields,
07:48including the interviews with the late actor's family and friends.
07:52Tony Hoare's Hollowed Grounds,
07:54the filming locations of Trick or Treat,
07:56which is one thing I'm really looking forward to watching.

08:12illustrated collector's booklet with essays by Michael Geinault,
08:16Sam Dane, and Michael Felsher,
08:20fold-out double-sided Sammy Kerr fan poster,
08:23which I'm already kind of considering getting a poster frame for,
08:26and six double-sided collector's card set.
08:30Wow. Exhausted just reading that.
08:32It's rated R 1986, color 97 minutes.
08:35So, of course, there's your J card.
08:36We'll just put that off to the side.
08:37I'm sure after all that, let's actually look at...
08:40So, first thing I do want to comment, though,
08:42is the way they designed the box here.
08:44The box is a very hard cardboard,
08:46as you guys can probably see here as well, Trick or Treat.
08:48Not only, though, is there three alternate covers,
08:50but each one of the covers had a different font.
08:53Again, I chose this one here,
08:54where you've got Sammy Kerr holding onto, of course,
08:57the main character here.
08:58His fans won't let him die.
09:00He won't let them live.
09:02The only thing I will, though, say about this
09:04is while I do...
09:05I'm glad now I did pick up cover art A.
09:09The thing about it, though, is I would say
09:11it's not super clear.
09:13It's a little more on the faded side.
09:14I wish the actual image here on the front
09:16was a little bit more sharper.
09:18But still, again, really nice-looking artwork here.
09:20On the back, what are you so afraid of?
09:22It's only rock and roll.
09:23Of course, we're going to open up here as well.
09:25Just put the cover... put the slip there.
09:27Now, we've got the poster here for Sammy Kerr.
09:30This is the original poster that Ragman,
09:33or Eddie, has in the movie.
09:35He has this, I believe...
09:36Is it just above his bed?
09:38Just going to open it up right here.
09:39So, we've got Sammy Kerr.
09:40Down below, the signature of Sammy Kerr.
09:42And then on the back side of that,
09:44we would have what would be like
09:46the original promotional artwork for Ragman.
09:48And it just so happens to be...
09:50Let me just grab the original German case
09:53that I have here.
09:54You can see it's the exact same artwork.
09:55This artwork made a lot of rounds.
09:57There was also, as well, a DVD release
09:59that had Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons on the front.
10:02And for a while, seeing that online,
10:04I thought to myself,
10:05well, I really don't have any interest
10:07to watch a rock and roll horror film
10:08called Trick or Treat
10:09that's just got Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne
10:11on the front.
10:12It's really a bad cover.
10:14But I am looking forward to maybe putting
10:15the Sammy Kerr poster up.
10:16I'm going to put that down in my...
10:18what will be eventually my horror room right now.
10:20It's sort of just like odds and ends and stuff.
10:22And I really don't have it properly organized.
10:24Then we've got ourselves Trick or Treat.
10:26Now, this is a booklet.
10:27And it's quite a substantial one.
10:29It's got the cast and crew inside.
10:30Behind the scenes, a year of tricks and treats.
10:32I'm not going to read all of this, obviously.
10:34But I just want to show you guys some artwork there.
10:36There's Ozzy Osbourne
10:38playing, of course, the holy man that's on screen.
10:40Talking about the problems,
10:42the evils of rock and roll.
10:44Which would be fitting, of course,
10:45for Ozzy Osbourne to be saying all that.
10:47Sammy Kerr.
10:48Let me just flip through this quickly.
10:50Some side artwork there of Sammy Kerr.
10:52There's Eddie.
10:54Yeah, if you haven't had a chance to watch
10:56the original Trick or Treat film...
10:57Now, I know there's several Trick or Treats.
10:59There's Trick or Treat 1986.
11:01Of course, this is the 4K release.
11:02There's Trick or Treats,
11:04which I believe actually predated Trick or Treat.
11:06And then, of course, there's Trick or Treat.
11:08It's always confusing to tell people, like,
11:10I'm going to watch Trick or Treat.
11:11Oh, the one with Sam?
11:12No. No, not the one with Sam.
11:14This is the original release for a DVD.
11:16So you can kind of get an idea, like,
11:18looking at this.
11:19Who would be looking at this and saying,
11:21Oh, I don't know. I'm kind of interested in watching
11:23Trick or Treat starring Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne.
11:25It's not even really the right...
11:27I mean, Gene Simmons and Ozzy
11:29don't even look like this at all in the movie.
11:31Gene Simmons has a beard and he's a radio disc jockey.
11:34And Ozzy Osbourne is an evangelist.
11:36He looks nothing at all like this.
11:38One of the other posters as well
11:40for promoting Trick or Treat.
11:42I think one of the overseas releases of Trick or Treat
11:44may have had, in fact, that poster.
11:46And let's just see here.
11:48The miscasting is part of the fun.
11:50D.E.G.'s latest film is Unexpected Treats.
11:52Newspaper articles, of course.
11:54D.E.G. offers rock and roll film for Halloween.
11:58The guy on stage
12:00looks like Skippy, but isn't.
12:0225 years ago, Trick or Treat filmed.
12:04A lot of good stuff in here.
12:06There's what Gene Simmons obviously looked like.
12:08He was the disc jockey
12:10that offered up Sammy Kerr's last album
12:12over to Eddie.
12:14And that's, of course, where all the problems started.
12:16A lot of good stuff.
12:18I'm going to sit down and read that.
12:20And, of course, we've got ourselves the main case.
12:22Now, the main case does have the original artwork.
12:24So, again, just very much similar
12:26to the one I already had.
12:28And I believe this also does have a flip-out cover.
12:30So, if you don't like the flip-out cover,
12:32or at least if you don't like
12:34the insert cover that we have,
12:36so there's this one, right?
12:38Or there's this one here as well.
12:40Now, I might just choose to have this
12:42just because there's so much more going on here.
12:44Trick or Treat's a completely different font.
12:46Death, Resurrection, Destruction.
12:48The Ultimate Comeback.
12:50In fact, I'm going to just take out the other things
12:52that are also inside this case, too.
12:54Seeing as we're here anyways,
12:56I'm just going to flip this around.
12:58I'm going to put it back in the case
13:00and this is the way I'm going to present Trick or Treat.
13:02Love that cover.
13:04OK.
13:06So, outside of, of course, the cases,
13:08outside of the movies,
13:10you have your Ultra HD,
13:12you have your regular Blu-ray.
13:14So, for those that were looking at this
13:16thinking, I don't have a 4K player,
13:18it does also have a Blu-ray.
13:20And the one thing that's also got that,
13:22I'm really looking forward to giving this a try,
13:24is the soundtrack CD.
13:26Now, there were a couple of people,
13:28a couple of people at Scare Media,
13:30also had bought the album.
13:32I really want to get my hands on the album as well.
13:34I just love the soundtrack
13:36and all the songs that are in Trick or Treat.
13:38So, even though this is the CD,
13:40I'm going to be playing that in my car.
13:42That's usually where I listen to a lot of my CDs
13:44as of late while I'm driving to work.
13:46I'm going to see if I can get my hands on the album as well.
13:48Outside of the case, a good hefty case,
13:50we've also got ourselves some Synapse Films,
13:52a product catalog for 2025.
13:54Most of these I think I've actually picked up.
13:56Yeah, Ten and Bray,
13:58I've just recently got that one.
14:00I think this one down below here.
14:02Phenomenon.
14:04Phenomena, I should say.
14:06Yeah, I'm going to have to be careful.
14:08Be careful.
14:10Some of the covers inside,
14:12probably not the best for showing younger viewers.
14:14And then, we've got ourselves
14:16little postcards.
14:18Now, I always really called these lobby cards.
14:20Lobby cards would be something that a lot of times
14:22they would release literally in lobbies.
14:24I'm picking these up at movie theaters.
14:26Sometimes if you would see stage shows as well,
14:28they'd give you lobby cards.
14:30Why am I having such a hard time
14:32getting this opened up here?
14:34There we go.
14:36I want to show you guys the lobby cards as well
14:38that comes included with this.
14:40So again, what are you afraid of?
14:42It's only rock and roll.
14:44The front has one image,
14:46and then the back of it has the different posters.
14:48So there's this one here.
14:50I know we've kind of already looked at this
14:52and we'll flip that around.
14:54So that's the poster.
14:56That's the case insert
14:58that I've now flipped around.
15:00So we've got this one.
15:02And this is good too, because there's an image of Sammy Kerr.
15:04Kind of near more the end of the movie.
15:06And there's this one,
15:08which I don't think made many rounds.
15:10I mean, North America didn't get much
15:12in the way of the trick-or-treat movie anyways.
15:14VHS releases,
15:16a few, I think, of course, one or two DVDs.
15:18I believe this may have been
15:20in fact the European image that they used
15:22or one of the first posters,
15:24which we also get an image as well of the demon,
15:26which really isn't advertised at all on the poster.
15:28Then we've got Ozzy Osbourne
15:30as the Evangelist on TV.
15:32Flip that around.
15:34Is that perhaps the German?
15:36Italian?
15:38I want to say that that's like the Italian poster.
15:40And the whole idea, of course,
15:42with trick-or-treat is it's the album,
15:44Sammy Kerr's last album,
15:46when it spins backwards, it actually talks to Eddie.
15:48That's pretty cool.
15:50There's Eddie as well.
15:52Flip around on the back.
15:54I would guess to say Japanese.
15:56I could be very well wrong.
15:58Let me know down below.
16:00And then we've got also Sammy Kerr as well,
16:02trapped behind a cage.
16:04And that's one of the alternate artworks as well.
16:06The only thing it doesn't have
16:08is the alternate two cover arts.
16:10So, of course, if you guys did want to see
16:12what that cover art looked like,
16:14I would obviously encourage you guys to check online.
16:16I ended up getting this one.
16:18It was one of those cases where I was really worried
16:20it was going to be selling out.
16:22Just for the fact that Synapse had it
16:24and then their site was dropping off for a while.
16:26It was on for about five minutes.
16:28It was literally just a window of time
16:30that you had to just keep refreshing
16:32and checking their site.
16:34And luckily, I was off that day.
16:36So I was refreshing it.
16:38I was looking and I'm like,
16:40oh, site's still down.
16:42I checked it again later.
16:44And I did get some other boutique labels
16:46that did also have Trick or Treat.
16:48And unfortunately, which also added to my anxiety of this,
16:50had sold out of them.
16:52Because I guess a lot of collectors
16:54were just looking to Synapse
16:56and like, well, we can't get it this way.
16:58We're going to go instead to the other boutique labels.
17:00And for no surprise, they obviously
17:02are the ones that sold out of those.
17:04So eventually, I did get Synapse.
17:06I ordered from Synapse.
17:08A little more on the pricier side,
17:10the fact that this was a $66 movie.
17:12It was probably about $130
17:14when it was all in.
17:16But I am finally glad to have
17:18an actual physical copy
17:20of Ragman or Trick or Treat.
17:22Just because again, the one that I had for a while
17:24still worked fine.
17:26Other than really just having to be able to skip around
17:28German titles on the main menu,
17:30it played fine and it was good quality.
17:32Now again, I haven't had the chance to watch Trick or Treat.
17:34Though I usually have the rule
17:36that when it gets past that holiday,
17:38I don't then watch those horror movies
17:40like the following year.
17:42I might though have to make the exception when it comes to Trick or Treat
17:44because I'm just such a big fan of Trick or Treat.
17:46Kind of again, the same way as Christmas Evil.
17:48Even though again,
17:50it's not the true Halloween.
17:52I want to say it's Halloween classic.
17:54I know it's one that probably not as many people
17:56think of as a Halloween classic.
17:58But it's usually the one I always start
18:00the Hallow's season watching with.
18:02Trick or Treat and then Christmas Evil.
18:04Christmas Evil is always the one I usually watch
18:06when it comes to Christmas movies.
