00:00The government now has a 1-billion-pound fund for the development of the country's seaweed industry

00:06next year, according to the Department of Agriculture.

00:09This is Orlan Habagat of PIA Palawan with the national news.

00:14The Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tio Laurel Jr. announced

00:20in front of those who attended the Philippine Seaweed Congress

00:23held in the city of Puerto Princesa, Camacailan

00:26that they have a fund for the development of agriculture,

00:30particularly in the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or BFAR,

00:34for the development of the country's seaweed industry.

00:38What we will do next year is one of the biggest investments in the seaweed industry.

00:45We have already allocated 1 billion pesos to BFAR in the past decade.

00:49This 1 billion will be given to drug suppliers,

00:54government will give money to expand the seaweed farms and seaweed warehouses.

01:04According to BFAR National Director Isidro Vilayo Jr.,

01:08aside from tuna, seaweeds are the second major marine products exported by the country.

01:15Director Vilayo also said that seaweeds are widely used,

01:19such as in food and non-food applications.

01:23It is also used in industrial, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and many others.

01:29The record, I think we are producing about 1,550,000 tons annually,

01:351.5 million tons annually in our production.

01:41Seaweeds production share is the largest in the aquaculture sector.

01:46Some of the funds allocated for 2025 are the construction of seaweed nurseries across the country,

01:54dryers, warehouses, training of seaweed farmers,

01:58and other projects that will help them to continue their production.

02:04According to BFAR Mimarupa, Palawan is the second top producing province of seaweeds in the country.

02:11The province produces 300,000 metric tons of seaweeds annually.
