A tourism tax in Wales could become a reality in the next few years as the Senedd look to push the law through in the next month. The Welsh government have said that nothing will be introduced until 2027, but those opposed to the plans says it risks jobs in tourist areas.

00:00Wales has a thriving tourism industry. Some areas of the country totally rely on tourists
00:07through the summer months and provides thousands of jobs for local residents. The Welsh Government
00:13have been toying with the idea of a so-called tourism tax for a few years and the wheels
00:17look to finally be in motion as it's set to be proposed and discussed in the Senate
00:22later on this month. It looks to mirror a number of holiday destinations with similar
00:27regulations in place like Greece, Spain and Portugal and with overnight stays being given
00:32a visitor levy thought to be roughly a few pounds. Nothing can be put in place for a
00:38while as the law is debated and scrutinised. It could be passed by the Senate next year
00:43and put forward to local authorities by 2026 and then start being charged in 2027.
00:50It would be optional for local authorities to implement the charge but the Welsh Conservatives
00:54say that it will risk jobs in tourist areas.
