The Japanese airport that says it never loses a bag

Kansai International Airport in Japan can't be held responsible for the less superlative performance of airlines or other stops on a traveler's journey, but it claims its handlers never lose a bag. In 30 years of operation, the airport serving the region around Osaka and Kyoto says it has never lost a suitcase, a set of golf clubs, a stroller or anything in fact -- a feat its employees humbly shrug off as nothing special.

01:30The Kansai International Airport is an airport with very, very few connecting passengers.
01:42Most of the passengers using in and out of Kansai with very few connections, so it's
01:47much easier of course to not lose luggage when you don't have connections.
01:52But it's not only this, it's also due to our systems and most importantly to the staff
01:59of our company, but also the staff of the airlines, the staff of the ground owners,
02:03all this community makes this possible and we are really proud of this.
02:06You know the rate is quite low, if you think about the passenger volumes that we have,
02:12you know 6.9 bags being mishandled is a very low figure.
02:16You know back if we think about a decade ago we were in double figures and now we're into
02:21single figures.
02:22Bags normally if they're mishandled is normally delayed and that's more to the complex processes
02:28of transfer.
02:29So going from airport to airport like a point-to-point with no transfers, bags are very rarely mishandled
02:34or lost.
02:35The complexity really comes in the transfer process where you know passengers have short
02:41connection times and they're trying to get from one flight to another and sometimes a
02:44bag just physically can't make that because of the complexity and the time.
02:48So where you see kind of human error or where you see these mishandling errors is where
02:53the airport has not used technology.
02:56So where they're doing manual processing so you know they're relying heavily on the humans
03:02to process the bags.
03:03Like I said once you introduce technology and automation and that digitalization that
03:08error rate significantly reduces.
