Japan holds first trial of air taxi flight

Joby Aviation made its first trial test of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Japan on Nov. 2, 2024 as the company enhances cooperation with Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation. The eVTOL, an air taxi that combines the elements of helicopters and drones, aims to offer zero-emission journeys that coincides with Toyota Motor’s goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. On Oct. 2, the Japanese automaker giant announced that it would invest an additional $500 million to support the commercial production of Joby’s air taxi, making the company’s total investment in Joby to $894 million. Joby Aviation is set to operate air taxi flights at Expo 2025 that will take place in Osaka next year.
