There are all kinds of creepy things going on in "Resident Evil 8." Ever since it hit our consoles, fans have been combing every dark frame of "Village," hunting for clues as to how the entry fits within the rest of the franchise. And there's a lot to find, as it turns out. By the time "Resident Evil Village" comes to its thrilling conclusion, all those references have really started to merge with the seventh game in the series, and the ending mixes in the backstory at a breakneck pace. There's a lot to untangle here, so let's take a look at the end of "Resident Evil Village" and find some explanations.
Transcript
00:00The last act of Resident Evil Village throws wave after wave of backstory and action at
00:05players, making certain events difficult to entangle.
00:09That said, we're taking a look at the game's twisty ending as well as what fans think may
00:13happen in the next game.
00:15When Chris enters Mother Miranda's lab near the end of the village, he finds Ethan's wife
00:19Mia trapped in a cage, scared and alone.
00:23"...Goddamn, it really is you."
00:28She reveals that Miranda kept her trapped and performed experiments on her.
00:32More importantly, Mia shares that Ethan is special, though she doesn't say why.
00:36Instead, players have to discover that on their own.
00:39Before Village released, fans speculated that Mia and Ethan hadn't been cured from their
00:43mold exposure in Resident Evil 7.
00:46That would mean that their daughter Rosemary was also infected with the mold, potentially
00:50granting her unnatural abilities.
00:53Rosemary's powers haven't necessarily been confirmed or denied, but Mia was clearly of
00:57scientific interest to Mother Miranda.
00:59Considering that Miranda has dedicated her life to studying the megamycete, the progenitor
01:04of the mold, it would make sense that her interest in Mia was also somehow related to
01:08her mission to bring back her daughter, Ava.
01:11As far as players know, Mia ends up safe at the end of Resident Evil 8, freed from her
01:16prison and able to raise Rosemary.
01:18Although the plot of Village doesn't necessarily follow Mia after her escape from Mother Miranda's
01:22lab, it seems that she exits the game relatively unscathed, but still mold-infected.
01:28Chris Redfield, the boulder-punching hero of many Resident Evil games, got an unfair
01:32rap leading up to the release of Village.
01:35Promotional materials, like the several trailers Capcom released, portrayed Chris as a villain,
01:40apparently shooting Mia without remorse and leaving Ethan confused in his wake.
01:45Chris?
01:46What the hell?
01:47Sorry, Ethan.
01:49No!
01:52What?
01:53Why?
01:54However, all of that was nothing more than Capcom's effort to misdirect fans into believing
01:59Chris had turned evil or was a victim of mind control.
02:02Instead, Chris revealed late in the game that he had attempted to assassinate Mother Miranda,
02:06who had used her shapeshifting powers in order to infiltrate the Winters' home and steal
02:11Rosemary.
02:12Chris Redfield begins and ends Resident Evil Village trying to destroy the massive ball
02:16of mold writhing underneath the European village.
02:19Eventually, Chris plants a bomb on the fetus-shaped wad of black vines, leading up to the climactic
02:24explosion that ends the mold that plagued Resident Evil 7 and 8.
02:28Well, maybe.
02:30Only Resident Evil 9 can answer that for certain.
02:33Chris investigates Mother Miranda's lab, which serves as a lore dump for many characters
02:37in the game, including the Four Lords.
02:40Echoes and classified documents describe how the Lords were made and what their weaknesses
02:44were.
02:45At this point, Ethan has disposed of Lady Demitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau,
02:50and Karl Heisenberg.
02:51However, seeing how each of them turned out to be imperfect vessels for Ava highlights
02:56just how far Miranda went in order to bring her daughter back.
03:00Every Lord contained a parasitic Cadeau, a small creature that helped Miranda implant
03:04the mold into other vessels.
03:05The Cadeau had a different effect on each Lord, granting them various powers.
03:11Players also discover Miranda's ties to other Resident Evil games upon visiting her lab.
03:15Documents reveal that Oswell Spencer, one of the founders of the zombie-creating Umbrella
03:19Corporation, was a medical student who worked with Miranda years ago.
03:23His experiences with Miranda inspired Spencer to continue researching how to infect one
03:28living individual with another, thereby forcing them into the next stage of human evolution.
03:34"...I was to become a god, creating a new world with an advanced race of human beings."
03:45Resident Evil 8 connects the plots of Biohazard and Village to the rest of the series in a
03:50way fans didn't see coming.
03:52Miranda is, in part, responsible for the Umbrella Corporation's existence, and she inspired
03:57an entire cottage industry of bioweapon research.
04:01First of all, nothing good happened to Ethan Winters in Resident Evil 8.
04:04If you thought he deserved a nice ending or some sort of redemption, you'll need to find
04:08a nice fan fiction that rewrites history.
04:11Ethan Winters has an absolutely horrible time in Village, even though he ends the game as
04:15a hero.
04:16The first thing that happens when Ethan enters the Village is that he gets his hand partially
04:20bitten off.
04:21Things only get worse from there.
04:23Ethan appears to die at the beginning of the final act of Village, and players abruptly
04:27switch to Chris Redfield's perspective.
04:30For a short while, Ethan seems to be truly dead, but of course, Mia eventually reveals
04:34that there's something special about Ethan.
04:37It turns out that Ethan is special because he's not alive, and he hasn't been for the
04:41better part of three years.
04:43In fact, Ethan was actually killed by Jack Baker during the events of Resident Evil 7.
04:48Since then, Ethan's body has been puppeted by the Mold, connecting him to the Megamind
04:52seat in ways he never asked for.
04:54You were always dead.
04:57What are you saying?
05:00I can still…
05:04After Mother Miranda rips his heart out, Ethan wakes up and confronts the hallucination of
05:09Evelyn Baker, who tells him of his fate.
05:12Even though Ethan doesn't want to accept the truth, he continues through and eventually
05:16volunteers to detonate Chris' bomb, killing himself in the process.
05:20Chris and his team reveal the Megamind seat to be connected to Evelyn, the bioweapon responsible
05:25for the Dolby incident in Resident Evil 7.
05:28While the Megamind seat growing beneath the Village doesn't have quite the same sort of
05:31genetic coding Evelyn did, it's made out of the same material, a fungus that has miraculous
05:37regenerative properties.
05:38Chris plants a bomb on the Megamind seat before heading into Miranda's lab, but the explosive
05:43doesn't come into play until later in the game.
05:45After Chris begins to usher a badly hurt Ethan away from the Village, Ethan volunteers to
05:50stay behind and see the bomb through.
05:52Before he returns to the Megamind seat, Ethan gives his jacket and rosemary to Chris.
05:57Watch over her, I'll teach her to be strong.
06:05The Megamind seat does explode, as players see from afar, but as the old saying goes,
06:10you shouldn't believe anyone or anything is dead until you see a body.
06:14The Megamind seat could live on through samples, other bioweapons, or just plain old determination.
06:20When the Megamind seat and the bomb attached to it exploded at the end of Resident Evil
06:24Village, it seemed that there was no hope for Ethan Winters.
06:27However, some astute fans with the help of a mod discovered that Ethan actually appears
06:31at the end of the game.
06:32As Rosemary rides away in an unmarked car, ready to continue on with whatever job she
06:37has been working and using her abilities, a man appears in the distance and walks towards
06:41the car.
06:42Players with a modded photo mode zoomed in on the man and discovered it was the full
06:46character model for Ethan, complete with his cut-up left hand.
06:50Fans have speculated that while Ethan might be in future Resident Evil games, he probably
06:54won't appear as a playable character.
06:57After all, the game mentions that the father's story has ended, and now it seems that Rosemary
07:01gets to take center stage.
07:03Still, Ethan might play a role in future games, even if he isn't the same as he was when Rose
07:07last saw him.
07:08Could something stranger have happened as Ethan in the Mega Mice seat endured the bomb's
07:12blast?
07:13Knowing Resident Evil is entirely possible.
07:16Players will likely have to wait for Resident Evil 9 to find out anything for sure.
07:21The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, known as the BSAA for short, plays a small
07:26but significant part in the final act of Resident Evil Village.
07:30As Chris and his Blue Umbrella team journey into the heart of the village, they see BSAA
07:34operatives descending in the distance, headed towards the same target.
07:38After the Mega Mice seat explodes in the distance, one of Chris' agents says,
07:43"...Captain, you need to see this.
07:46BSAA didn't send soldiers.
07:51This is a bioweapon."
07:52The agent then shows Chris a corpse of a hairless man with mottled gray skin, similar to the
07:57kinds of creatures Chris and co. have fought in previous Resident Evil games.
08:01Since the BSAA is supposed to find and stop bioweapons and all sorts of bioterrorism,
08:06their choice to send a bioweapon into the field seems suspect at best.
08:10Thankfully, Ethan's quest to save his daughter Rosemary is successful.
08:15Rosemary lives, safely whisked away by Chris, to live and grow into young adulthood.
08:20In a post-credits scene, the final moments of Resident Evil Village shows a now-teenage
08:24Rosemary visiting her father's grave, bringing flowers to him and wishing him a happy birthday.
08:29"...Sorry I missed last week.
08:32I have a lot of tests coming up.
08:35You know how it is."
08:37It's important to remember that Rose went through a lot during Resident Evil Village,
08:41too.
08:42While she may not have suffered as much as Ethan did, perhaps, she did get split into
08:45four pieces and stored in flasks, only to be merged back together in the game's finale.
08:50Her survival of that ordeal alone means that Rosemary possesses superhuman abilities.
08:55Some gamers have theories on how Rose will feature in future Resident Evil games.
09:00It's possible her powers will manifest as part of the next game's mechanics.
09:04Rosemary also potentially contains the memories of many individuals because of her connection
09:09to the Megamyces, which could allow her to obtain information she wouldn't otherwise
09:13have.
09:14There are nearly limitless possibilities for how Rosemary's powers will manifest in Resident
09:18Evil 9, but fans will probably have to wait quite a while to learn more.
09:23I can show you things even Chris doesn't know I can do.
