NGOs worry a plan to hire migrant workers as short-term caregivers could be detrimental to people with long-term care needs and lead to exploitation of workers.
Transcript
00:00NGOs are concerned about a new short-term care plan in Taiwan that would let eligible
00:05families and groups hire migrant workers as caregivers.
00:09The government has been stressing its plans for Taiwan's future long-term care needs.
00:13This plan is aimed more at helping those who only need temporary assistance.
00:17But some NGOs see a possible diversion of resources, hampering efforts to make long-term
00:23care a public service.
00:24They also worry about the consequences of letting migrant workers, Taiwan's main long-term
00:29caregivers, into short-term care as well.
00:33Concerns range from a loss of jobs for local workers to exploitation.
00:36The labor conditions for migrant workers and their families are 1.8 times higher, but the
00:43salary is 1.2 times lower.
00:46It's not the same.
00:49Taiwan's labor ministry says it will work to ensure migrant workers are looked after
00:54under the new system.
