00:00We are still at the beginning of our discussion on the Projects for Persons Deprived of Liberty.
00:05We will talk about the STELLA Project, a program that helps female PDLs to have their children with them
00:13while they are away from them since they entered the prison.
00:17And to give us more details about this project, we are joined by Adzori Loy Villarin and Mark Angela Zamora
00:25who are some of the pioneers of this project. Good morning and welcome to Rising Tribe Philippines.
00:32Hi, good morning.
00:33Good morning, Adzori Loy and Mark.
00:36Tell us more about this project, STELLA. How was this project conceptualized?
00:42Okay, so we had an opportunity with the STELLA Project through the Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation or HLAF.
00:50We were given this opportunity because two fine arts students from the Technological University of the Philippines approached us.
00:58They are Miles Angelo and Rica Odron.
01:02Okay.
01:02They approached HLAF because they want to help PDLs using their thesis but they don't know how.
01:10So we gave them a chance to go to jail and interview other PDLs.
01:17Then they found out that PDLs want to spend time with their children.
01:22So how can this book, STELLA Project, help mothers who are in prison to have their children?
01:33We are using the STELLA coloring book for an activity.
01:39Okay.
01:39I think Mark will be the next one.
01:41Okay, go ahead, Mark.
01:42Actually, we are using the STELLA Project for the kids to help them spend more time with their mothers.
01:51We have an activity that, aside from the usual coloring that they do, they also do other things.
02:01We also have games for the kids.
02:04Every STELLA project has different activities that we do for them.
02:12For example, for STELLA 1, we did games.
02:16For STELLA 2, we did love letters with each other to the parents.
02:21For STELLA 3, we provide support for the mothers so that they can have more active activities.
02:30How was the reception of the PDLs of the women who were beneficiaries of this project?
02:35It was very good.
02:36Actually, we also told them that we did not expect that for all three times that we conducted the project,
02:45they were really crying, right, Mark?
02:47Yes.
02:48Those moments were really precious.
02:50Of course, they were always with their mothers.
02:54One of the stories is that there are a lot of PDL mothers who were able to do this for the first time.
03:01They were able to do things that they cannot do outside.
03:03They were able to read the stories of their children's parents,
03:08and they were able to do the coloring inside through the STELLA Project.
03:12That is what we are most proud of, that they were able to do it for the first time through the STELLA Project.
03:19Okay, you have your interviews, your case studies, for sure.
03:22Can you tell us about the personal stories upon doing the STELLA or during the STELLA Project?
03:27What are the stories specifically that they remember because of this project?
03:34As I mentioned, they were able to do those things for the first time.
03:39We encountered a lot of PDLs who were not able to give their children time,
03:47sometimes outside, but upon going inside the jails,
03:52they were able to have a deeper bonding with their mother and with their child.
03:58They were able to have a stronger bond.
04:02Aside from that, the child's mental health was also helped by their mother.
04:08They were able to help their mother to read the stories.
04:12What is the story about?
04:15The STELLA story was recommended by HLAF for the students.
04:20We told them that they can relate it to the story of a parent who was imprisoned in prison for a short period of time,
04:27but was able to return.
04:28That is the story of the STELLA story.
04:31The STELLA story is about how Stella's mother disappeared while the stars were twinkling in the sky.
04:40When she disappeared, Stella thought that her mother would never return.
04:45But with the help of a person named Ulap,
04:49we asked Ulap, along with our PGMP personnel and HLAF,
04:54to help Stella's mother to return to Stella.
05:00Okay, it's a coloring book, right?
05:02Yes.
05:03So, it's a story and a coloring book at the same time.
05:07And the message of hope,
05:09that it's still possible for them to reunite.
05:13Because sadly, this means that while they were in prison,
05:19their children were still young.
05:21So, the growing and crucial years of their childhood,
05:24they were not able to reunite with their mother.
05:27So, through this project, somehow, they were able to give time to their children.
05:32Of course, there's still hope.
05:35There's a second chance for the persons deprived of liberty.
05:37But you, what did you learn through this project?
05:40Actually, we were more inspired to look for more creative ways
05:45on how we can help the PBLs.
05:48Because they still have a lot of needs inside.
05:50Of course, this is supported by our PGMPs.
05:54So, we just want something more creative.
05:57Because when you were young, what do you remember?
06:00The quality time with your parents, right?
06:04Playing, coloring books, storytelling.
06:08So, it's like thinking outside the box,
06:11more than the normal visits that happen.
06:14How long has this Stella Project been going on?
06:17Actually, we've been doing it for three more times.
06:20From May, our first Stella Project.
06:24Then, it was followed by July.
06:26Then, it was followed by September.
06:28In different places?
06:29Yes.
06:30A lot of people are helping you.
06:31How is the help?
06:32In terms of help or manpower,
06:35we are always thankful to our interns at HLAB.
06:40From Stella 1 at UP, the creator.
06:43Stella 2 at Batangas State University.
06:45And then, our Stella 3 is at the University of Santo Tomas.
06:48Our interns are one of the people who help us.
06:53How can we make this sustainable, Atty. Lloyd?
06:56Actually, what we would like to ask for help is
07:00to fund the production of Stella coloring books
07:05so that we can give them to jails nationwide.
07:08Because for now, the focus of the jails that we are giving
07:11is Quezon City at NCR.
07:13So, it's good if we can print more,
07:17we can give the other jails nationwide.
07:19And of course, there should be volunteers.
07:21So that we can conduct activities.
07:24Alright, on that note, thank you very much for your time.
07:28And for your support.
07:29I hope this project will be successful.
07:31I'm sure that there will be a lot of help in this Stella project.
07:35Let's give hope.
07:38How can we contact HLAB?
07:40Do you have a social media account?
07:42Yes, on Facebook.
07:44Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation
07:46or www.facebook.com
07:50Thank you very much, Atty. Lloyd and King Mark.
